I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

When I try, I get a delay of several days, and then a report of non-delivery.
I find it hard to believe that it cannot find lists.dyne.org.
I suspect that something else has gone wrong to result in this message.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

I monitor that list and your emails are not being held in moderation. You used to be able to post and absolutely nothing has been changed on dyne's end. Seems I remember you recently had a failure of some sort in your networking set up. My guess is that the problem is there . . .

"the mail system at host april.topoi.pooq.com" has broken DNS.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

Indeed.  I think it is quite likely that the problem is in my network setup, and I thank you for confirmation.
I'm hoping someone will suggest things to investigate to help track down the problem.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

SO ... the list software examine the DNS information of the sender (me) and doesn't like it.  But it is still capable of *sending* me the usual stream of messages?  Is my DNS information better for sending me a message than for receiving one?

What does it check for an incoming message but not for an outgoing one?

Hello HB:

... list software examine the DNS information of the sender ...

Just a guess ...

Could it be that the dyne.org system/software checks the sender's credentials ie: registered, etc. and if not rejects the message?
To be able to reject it, it has to be able to reply to the sender's email address which is why you are getting the error message.

I have sent a test message from an email account that is not registered at dng[at]lists.dyne.org.
That was roughtly 30' ago and it has not yet appeared on the list of 'newest messages'.

That is something that usually happens within one or two minutes if I send a message from the usual email address.
I have yet to receive a bounce notice from the that other email provider.

I will post again when I receive it.

Best,

A.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

It wouldn't have to send a message back to the sender.  The sender's email address is on one of the headers in the message itself.  But it might want to check if the sender actually exists or is just a randomly generated email address.

I have no trouble using dig to get the DNS information including the MX.  And it's using the 1.1.1.1 DNS server when it doe this (as configured in resolv.conf.

My olld server had a nontrivial email configuration.
I suspect I have to look into the SMTP configuration of the laptop I pressed into service as my stopgap server.  I suspect I was lulled into complacency by email apparently just working.  It now seems it was just apparently, not really.  Upon checking, I have trouble sending to gmail as well, and quite possible sending to everywhere.

I'll be looking at my backups from the old server for details.

Sorry to have bothered everybody.  But I'll continue doing it if I run into new problems and I will provide a success message when I finally do succeed.

It landed in moderation and I deleted it as you instructed to ignore it. At least it did arrive so something else is broken @hendrik's setup . . .

Ah ...
Config trouble.

Sorry to have bothered ...

No bother at all.

Please do.

I'm sure we'll learn something new.

I have still not received anything.
Probably by tomorrow, when 24hrs. have passed. (?)

Edit:
Seems posts crossed paths ...

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

Could someone examine the DNS entry for topoi.pooq.com from outside my domain and send me the results?  Especially the MX stuff?  From inside, I may not see the same as you.

If you know enough to see what's missing that would be a bonus.  I look at it from inside the domain, and it seems OK.  And I may be missing something someone else can see.

There were no differences in the postfix configuration, and it contained no obsolete IP numbers.  I'm back to looking at tinydns configuration.

I guess it is this:

~$ nslookup -type=A topoi.pooq.com

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:	topoi.pooq.com
Address: 69.165.131.134
~$ nslookup -type=MX topoi.pooq.com

Non-authoritative answer:
topoi.pooq.com	mail exchanger = 4 b.mx.pooq.com.
topoi.pooq.com	mail exchanger = 2 w.mx.pooq.com.
~$ nslookup -type=NS topoi.pooq.com
Non-authoritative answer:
*** Can't find topoi.pooq.com: No answer

Authoritative answers can be found from:
pooq.com
	origin = b.ns.pooq.com
	mail addr = hostmaster.pooq.com
	serial = 1703367291
	refresh = 16384
	retry = 2048
	expire = 1048576
	minimum = 2560

If you need something other than that, let me know.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

golinux,
    This is only related but when I searched DNG this topic came up and I saw your response saying you monitor DNG.
I've enroled twice to DNG but never got a response back.
On the 6th I posted an email to dng-owner@lists.dyne.org and got no response there either.
Is there some reason I'm not permitted on DNG?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

@Mike . . . Have you tried to post? First posts are moderated on all new accounts but there is nothing currently waiting in the queue. Maybe post a test email with the question you want to ask or if you don't have one atm say something like  "This is a test from Mike. Please delete". Then I can see if it arrives . . .

There was no response because it is on dyne's infrastructure and I have no idea where it might have landed . . .

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

might be worth checking that you are sending using the same email address registered with DNG and that is mentioned in the headers of the posts that you are receiving.
I sometimes I have problems like this because when composing a message, that is not a reply, my mail agent defaults to the 'wrong' address (I have several, all on the same server).

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

@Mike . . . I suggested  for you to post "A" test email. "A" meaning ONE. Now you have posted TWO with different addresses and there is no way to know which one you want to have activated sooooo . . . I am going to delete them both! When you want to post a comment or new issue to dng do so with the email of your choice and I will take care of it when I see it. I check once a day.

I requested:

Probably not a good idea to post parts of your email openly on this forum.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

golinux,
It's been most of a month now and I have yet to hear from anyone on DNG.
Are you sure that list is still alive or perhaps the administrator has had a heart attack.

Be well,

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

There have been posts coming through DNG as recently as February 07.
Much of the discussion seems to have moved from DNG to the discourse forum.  A pity.  The mailing list used to be my preferred way of getting questions and answers.

I'm still having problems posting on the mailing list (or emailing to anyone at al).  i still haven't resolved all my email issues on my new stopgap server, which is what this discussion was originally about.  I have some leads to follow up on, though, so I'll work on those before I ask for more help here.  In the meantime, I will not mark this as solved.  I plan to write an essay about my problems with email when I finally succeed.  It may help others.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

@Mike . . . I was wondering about that too so I checked activity on the list directly. The last post to DNG was several days ago 2024-02-07. Traffic there is sometimes very active and sometimes non-existent though I can't remember it being this quiet before. Try posting a legitimate post to the list and see if that kicks it into gear.  wink

PS. Have you checked Spam?

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

Hi golinux,
    I posted to DNG a few minutes ago but since I never got signed up am not holding my breath.
Yes I check spam often, ATT and now Frontier, my current provider, both use Yahoo. No matter how often you tell Yahoo not to put anything in spam they do it anyway and most every month bounce either a Debuan User List or Bash List digest packet as well. Welcome to the real world, Mike.
    Thanks for attaching the DNG list URL, I'd not stumbled across that yet, so bookmarked it.

Be well,
Mike

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

Did you actually create an account at https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/m … stinfo/dng? I think not because I just today I discovered that there is no trace of you in the DNG user list. You have to do that first. You will be sent a confirmation to which you have to reply. Then you will receive messages and when you submit your first post to be published to the list, it will go into moderation and I will OK it. Sorry it took so long to figure that out but this has never happened before.

Re: I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list

goinux, if you'll go back to message #12 in this thread you'll see that I've twice signed up for DNG but never got a response.
I sent a message to the list admin but got no response there either that why I asked if the list had died.
I'll try again to sign up as you suggest.

Be well,
Mike
