[SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

Hi!

I installed Devuan yesterday and the installation went well.
I encrypted the /root and /home partitions.
It boots to the XFCE desktop and all is well.

I haven't been able to get the wifi working for 2 days now and I need help.

I checked to see on Intel's website to see if I had the write iwlwifi firmware for my wifi nic and I did.
My Asus mobo came with a Intel Corporation Wireless ac9260.

The firmware wouldn't install no matter how many times I tried with dpkg.

Thinking that something went wrong I performed another fresh install w/o encryption.

The wifi still is not working no matter how many times I type in the passphrase.
I'm confused and I'm not sure how to fix this.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Aliz24

I'll tell you about Grub soon.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

Additional information to help you help me.
It looks like the firmware and the driver are both installed;

@devuanbox:~$ lsmod | grep -i wifi
iwlwifi 360448 1 iwlmvm
cfg80211 1134592 3 iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211

Hi, the firmware I use is... and I keep a copy on usb-stick for installations...

file:///media/glenn/ED21-8671/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode

My wifi/bt pcie card, not on-board.

makesure you have "non-free-firmware" added to your sources... /etc/apt/sources.list

firmware-iwlwifi non-free-firmware 20230210-5 (i am using)

I hope this helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

you can unpack (decompress) the .deb package an put the file where it will be found.

/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

Are you using excalibur?

Then the firmware-iwlwifi package installs the firmware to the wrong place; it installs into /usr/lib/firmware/intel whereas the kernel like always will want it in /lib/firmware/intel. If that's the case, please lodge a bug report to debian about it, as well as doing your own hands-on to make it work.

I have the firmware-iwlwifi_20230210-5_all.deb on a thumb drive. I was confused at the time.
The firmware/iwlwifi--9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode is on my laptop.
Do I need to untar it before I move it to /lib/firmware/Intel?

I don't think I'm using excalibur as I'm not sure what that is.
Looking in the rootfs I don't have /lib/firmware/intel. However I do have /lib/firmware/Intel and there are 30 plus files in that directory.

Do I need to download this for the .ucode?
https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/firmware-iwlwifi

OR do I need to move the /iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.618819.0.tgz to /lib/firmware/Intel?

Thanks, I checked my sources list and all of the entries show non-free-firmware.
I found this page with the /iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode on it but I don't understand how to download it to get it.
https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm … 59364cef6b

Good News!
I found the .ucode here.
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en … eless.html

Now if I understand correctly I need to put it in the correct place, right?
I have the /iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.618819 folder. And inside that folder is a file that is the actual /home/cora/Downloads/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.618819/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.ucode.

Do I place the folder in /lib/firmware/Intel or do I place the file with the .ucode in the /lib/firmware/Intel directory?

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

right-click, download.

If you're on the command line, you could try wget

change to the download directory and run wget <url>

cd/glenn/Downloads
wget https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/iwlwifi/linux-firmware/+/b5f09bb4f816abace0227d0f4e749859364cef6b/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode

Then, as root move or copy it to where it belongs. It's a bit hackkky.

On my box it's at

/lib/firmware/

if required... mine does bt as well AND

that is located at the little i intel folder (on my quite fresh install of Dev5)

/lib/firmware/intel/

No "/lib/firmware/Intel" folder at all!

I have unpacked packages just to see what is in there... usually 2 folders, compiled-code and install control (what to do to install)

anyhow, I hope this helps.

I don't know enough about firmware...

And not to forget: run an

# update-initramfs -u -k all

as root to tell the kernel to load this firmware.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

What usually works like a charm is getting a newer firmware from testing, unstable, experimental, amongst other things, like ublock-origin.
I look at /var/log/syslog for what firmware is requested, download & dpkg -i & usually cp -r the /lib/firmware/whatever to /root (and laters back to /lib/firmware,) & then dpkg -P the package because there's tons of firmware I don't need.
Another thing, if the firmware is buggy (unhandled firmware interrupt,) iwconfig wlan0 power off, particularly in console as the message will keep popping up and mess up your display.
Also useful, ifconfig wlx00127b217e6e name wlan0
In /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages you will see the firmware request about 80% to 90% down the log.

Thank you for your help GlenW.

Moving the .ucode to /lib/firmware did not help after a reboot. The Wifi still isn't working.

There were other things about the system that were missing and I didn't have functionality like I should have. Arrow keys, forward and backward buttons were not present to move from directory to directory and other key things were just not in place to have a functional desktop system.

After downloading the full devuan amd64  bit .iso that is 3.7 Gig's last night I have decided this morning to perform a fresh install with that fresh .iso.

I'll be back to share how the fresh installation went.

I'm in the middle of the fresh installation. After I create a 500 MB Fat 32 partition and a /ext4 partition on the Samsung nvme I select "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk"

The Partition MGR only shows the 500 MB partition and the other 2 swap partitons on the other drives on my desktop to be formatted.
The 249. GB partition that I created for the /root partition doesn't show.

UPDATE* Good news is I was able to figure out how to partition correctly and Devuan is now install and under Cinnamon works.
Gnome boots to a all black screen.

The wifi isn't working so I will try to do exactly as you have taught me in the above post's by placing the /iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.ucode
in the /lib/firmware directory.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

Hi, I still think you may need to install that firmware correctly.

When you installed, did give the firmware .ucode at installation (early) off a usb-stick. Usually that sticks, and carries through to being installed.

With that iso, be aware SEATD did not install, and that gave me a black screen. I had to see the errors in the logs to find out the missing bits.

Have a look inside the package we were talking about, and check the text files for instal clues. It should install, but it may not be Auto-Magic.

I'm using plasma, not gnome... see how you go.

No, I didn't know that I should have plugged in the thumb drive with the .ucode during the installation.

I did plug in the thumb drive with the .ucode on it after the fresh installation copied it to my Downloads directory and with root privileges:  moved it to /lib/firmware/intel/.
*BTW, the iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.ucode was already in /lib/firmware directory.

Currently I have an all black screen where my name shows and my password is typed in.
The screen is locked up and  holding down Ctrl + Del, or Ctrl + F1 or F2 won't give me a tty to shutdown more gracefully.

How do I fix this?

...make sure you have seatd installed.

Other than that, I'm not sure (I don't know).

How do I install seatd if it's not installed?

Fantastic news everyone!

Performing the fresh installation again was a complete success and I'm very pleased!

Wifi is working and Devuan looks exceptionally nice on my Gibabyte monitor.

Thank you all for helping me and GlennW thanks for your time and assistance.
Plugging in the usb during the install found the .ucode w/o a hitch. Firefox run's great.

@Aliz24:
Stop full-post quoting. It is damn annoying, and especially when there are only two of you in the thread.

Refer to this sticky for more info.

Are you saying that clicking on the "Quote" button and responding is annoying?

Should quick reply be used instead?

I read the sticky you linked but don't understand because of a disability.

You should only quote the part of the post you are responding to, if that's not obvious from context.

The only case for quoting all of a post is a small (~1 line) post several posts back in the thread to indicate which post you are responding to.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue

I apologize for the offtopic.
I just want to ask, “Who has tried to comply with the rules of minimum citation when using a smartphone?” smile

But seriously, on one of the sites in the response window, when you clicked the “Quote” button, only the selected text appeared, and not the entire message.
But that's it...

Good grief! A full quote post in response to clear instructions NOT TO FULL QUOTE POST. What am I missing here?
