Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

Why go so far? The most suitable repos to supplement Devuan's own with is Debian. This is because Devuan downloads most of it's aplications directly from Debian repos.
If you want a different version of firefox or firefox-esr, you first look at a fresher Devuan repro, like Ceres, otherwise you look at Debian Experimental. Then they can look further afield.

Here are my suggestions, to add in the sources.list:

deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged ceres main non-free contrib
deb http://http.debian.net/debian experimental main non-free contrib

Firefox 93.0-1 is in Devuan Ceres (I use that one) & Debian Sid
Firefox 92.0-2 is in Debian Experimental

Firefox-ESR 92.2.0-esr1 is in Devuan Ceres & Debian Sid
Firefox-ESR 92.1.0-esr1 is in Debian Experimental

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

I'll let it upgrade when the upgrade is due but I'm not looking forward to this given what I've seen from the new interface. Probably will be messing with profiles as well. Getting ready for more tweaking.

Yeah the proton theming is not that great, the icons and graphics they are using for it look terrible on my end.
They made some better improvements as far as pdf printing is concerned imo, not as good as chromium though.

Please don't post "advice" that will break other people's systems. I've already explained why that is a *terrible* idea here but if you don't want to listen to me then read the official advice of the Debian developers (which would also apply to Devuan):

Don't Break Debian wrote:

However, even installing few packages from a "future" release can be risky. The problems might not happen right away, but the next time you install updates.

The reason things can break is because the software packaged for one Debian release is built to be compatible with the rest of the software for that release. For example, installing packages from bookworm on a bullseye system could also install newer versions of core libraries including libc6. This results in a system that is not testing or stable but a broken mix of the two.

^ This is exactly what has happened to your system.

Confirm this with:

apt policy libc6

If that package is installed from testing then you need to restore your system from the backup you made before you broke it by adding ceres sources.

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

Why not add the

snapd

package to the Devuan repository and let the users decide?

I have it installed on my Debian systems and use that to upgrade Firefox, Thunderbird and Chromium. It's better than waiting for Debian to update them, plus Snap packages run sandboxed.

Because it's already available to Devuan users via amprolla.

And anyway snaps are not monitored by Canonical and have been known to serve malware:

Why all this hickup - just checked my 78.15.0ESR: the upgrade to 91.3.0ESR is possible.

No it is not.  It is a banned package.

FWIW, the Firefox snap is provided by Mozilla. The Thunderbird and Chromium snaps are provided by Canonical.

Repeating for truth . . . snapd is a banned package in Devuan.

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

I am waiting for an updated firefox-esr package, too. One site tells me already, that version 78 is not supported anymore and have issues displaying the site properly. yikes

Well, just a heads up. There is a build of 91.3.0 for Debian Bookworm based systems in Ubuntu PPA [0][1]. Let's see, if they do packages for older Debian releases.

UPDATE Ubuntu Focal > Debian Bullseye > Devuan Chimaera package is building. [2]

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

I currently use ceres on one of my laptops, but I also have a vm of devuan on that laptop so I can test before I upgrade. Just in case of issues...

wink

As for snapd, some people say you can change the repository it pulls packages from, to one other than canonical's.  That being said, its still in my mind, as bad as flatpak or nodejs' package manager and various other likewise separate installation methods.

Unless its built from source code of course, but in general I do not recommend nodejs, snapd, flatpak, appimage, pip or anything else besides compiling and regular installation.

Just a heads up, I DELIBERATELY listed those in order from worst to best.  wink

Also, librewolf is an option for ceres. I believe? As far as I can see anyways.

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

I have installed the Ubuntu Focal build. Had some warnings during install that directories were not empty and therefore could not be removed. And alternatives were defect, therefore forcefully resetted. Profiles are put in ~/.mozilla/firefox-esr/ instead of ~/.mozilla/firefox/. Posting right now with the new version.

Have fun! big_smile

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

I have encountered a rumour https://endoflife.date/firefox that the Firefox (firefox-esr: 78.15.0esr-1~deb11u1)  installed in my Chimaera rig (Actually installed from a beta "amd64 - desktop 20210906" iso) is no longer supported. Is this true? Does Firefox have an End Of Life page to keep users informed?

It does seem to be mentioned in release notes for subsequent versions, which is probably useful if you read release notes for versions that you don't use.

If it is true, will I automagically get an updated version with an apt full-upgrade "real soon now" or do I have to do some (shudder) work to make it happen? Is there somewhere that I can go to read up about developments, options, etc ?

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

The ESR version is the repositories is no longer supported by Mozilla and the new version is blocked by Mesa & rust:

https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/firefox-esr

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=998679

Just download the tarball from Mozilla and live with the added telemetry. It's the only way to be secure online.

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

I wonder if we could have some input from Devuan's Powers That Be on this subject? It seems Debian and therefore Devuan can no longer supply a supported Firefox, and users who wish to keep up-to-date must make their own plans? This might well be the sort of thing the "News and Announcements" section of the forum was designed for.

Re: How to have updated firefox-esr in Chimaera?

I haven't bothered checking the Debian mailing lists but I suspect they may update both Mesa and rustc to allow FF to be brought up to date. I certainly hope so anyway. Debian update the FF package in violation of the "stable release" principle already because they realise how important it is.

I should plead with Debian to post an alert on the Devuan forum, so Devuan users know that the default Devuan browser is no longer supported, and they need to make alternative plans if they want to use a supported browser?

Very simple: firefox-esr is not a genuine Devuan package, it is a Debian inheritance.

This seems to be a reasonable summary of the current debian dilemma. A real clusterf**k.
