[SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

Hello everybody

I've tried to install Chimaera from devuan_chimaera_4.0.beta-20210920_amd64_desktop.iso

1. Could not add firmware for wifi. The installer did not recognize file on the flash drive. The system has been Installed without network.

Could not run dpkg -i firmware-iwlwifi_20210315-3_all.deb

dpkg: warning: 'ldconfig' not found in PATH or not executable
dpkg: warning: 'start-stop-daemon' not found in PATH or not executable
dpkg: error: 2 expected programs not found in PATH or not executable
Note: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin

Added user to sudo group - the same story.

fixed wifi by apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi_20210315-3_all from the cache.

2. Cannot run gui program as root or sudo:

no protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
Gtk-WARNING cannot open display: :0.0

or execute command prompt:

sudo: unable to resolve host localhost.localdomain: Name or service not known
No protocol specified
Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly?
sudo: unable to resolve host localhost.localdomain: Name or service not known

3. Could not choose mate or lxqt during install:

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item or skip it and choose something else...

I' ve try to repeat this step many times without success. Only default+xfce works.

Is there a way to solve these issues or I should relay on install from live iso? I've no idea how to replace sysvinit with runit correctly, because of this the desktop dvd has been chosen.

P.S. It' s fanny, but even sign up to forum was problematic. The forum thinks I'm bot :)

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

One more issue:
apt-get install zfsutils-linux

Errors were encountered while processing:
zfsutils-linux
zfs-zed
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Second run seems to solve this issue, no error but "bash: zpool: command not found"

So I've no access to my zfs data drive

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

1) Which of the few installation methods did you try?

Certainly the very first one, named "Install", installs firware-iwlwifi both for the installer itself and for the installed system.

A common fault is to choose the method named "Expert install" and then fail to load the installer components (perhaps because the step is named "Load additional installer components").

2) perhaps you can illustrate the with the actual command that you try, and it's actual response.

3) perhaps you could rather include the tail of syslog for the failing installation attempts. Again the exact message is needed.

Yes the forum registration is fussy; good that you did find a way through it.

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

1) the default one, not "expert" Installed in legacy mode on gpt, / encrypted.

2) exemple1
# mousepad
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

(mousepad:2730): Gtk-WARNING **: 20:43:23.892: cannot open display: :0.0

exemple2
sudo /usr/bin/truecrypt --protect-hidden=no --filesystem=none --keyfiles="my keyfile" /dev/sdb1 && sleep 3; sudo zpool import data

sudo: unable to resolve host localhost.localdomain: Name or service not known
No protocol specified
Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly?
sudo: unable to resolve host localhost.localdomain: Name or service not known
cannot import 'data': no such pool available

#zpool data
bash: zpool: command not found

3) do not know where to find it  cat /var/log/syslog | grep firmware ?

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

1) firmware-iwlwifi is on the ISO somewhere in its pool/ directory tree.
You might try to find and install that. there is also rfkill which you might need if the wifi is "turned off".
(The firmware should have been installed "automatically" during the installation; not sure why that didn't happen)

2) what's the output of:

# pgrep -a Xorg
# echo $DISPLAY

3) well the failures of installing mate and lxqt would have been during the installation so it's moot now, otherwise the installer has its /var/log/syslog that you can tail the end portion of to see what the error messages are.

2) ok. In order for root to run X programs on a user's X server started by slim the two environment variables
XAUTHORITY=/home/devadmin/.Xauthority and DISPLAY=:0 would be needed. E.g.

# XAUTHORITY=/home/devadmin/.Xauthority DISPLAY=:0 mousepad

(replace devadmin with the user id)

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

ralph.ronnquist thanks for the answer.

I was using devuan beowulf installed from live for a while but had some small issues with fan, sensors not working etc. Devuan beowulf desktop dvd also required firmware for wifi, but those times it was expert install if I remember. Abandoned in favor of live iso. Popos has been before and bodhi was after. Fully compatible. But I want to go out from systemd. Devuan seems to be the only option for me in linux world. Rolling releases are not for me. Other options is bsd.

Is it better to install chimaera from live? Is there some manual to replace sysvinit by runit correctly?

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

"live installer" is a good choice; I'm not sure whether it's strictly better or not but it has the "advantage" of try-before-buy smile

I don't know about runit. Perhaps the best is start a new thread on that topic as there's for sure people with experience from that around here.

I have installed to 5 machines from the 'live' Chimaera image, all working fine as desktops, so yes, it is likely the best route. smile

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

Hi devadmin

I always feel personally insulted and "victim-blamed" by this question, but now I find myself asking it:

1) Can you confirm that the image you wrote to your flashdrive, passes the checksum test?

2) Can you perhaps try another flashdrive? Maybe you were just unlucky.

These checks usually have little cost (unless, for example, you have to buy another flashdrive) , and they *could* save quite a bit of pain.

I have the idea that the install beta isos have been getting refreshed early in the week for a few weeks now....so there might be a "20210927" edition soon?

It might also be useful to know more about the computer? Perhaps it just hates Chimaera.

A question for Devuan helpers: Is there a system "discovery" tool like inxi on the install or live media?

Good luck!

1) Yes the image is ok, flash drive - I do not know, but as installation was "half-successful" it should be ok too.
2) I gave up. Devuan is installed from live image.

Sure, it hates Devuan smile It still complains about some firmware.

Thanks.

I still have problems with zfs. It complains: invalid or corrupted cache file content.

I've no idea how people do that everything works? For example, I've tried literally dozens of "solutions" to get tap to click. Tap to click worked perfectly in default xfce, but  I wanted to try TDE. Finally it's solved. But I still do not have access to other partitions. I have no right. Trinity has no rights or permissions or I do not know what... no volume control, no "Fn+volume, Fn+backlight" etc ...

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

Have you tried to use "sudo --login" or "sudo -l" instead of plain "sudo"? On newer devuan you need "sudo -l to reach the paths to be able to run commands.
I don't know if you can connect "sudo -l" with other commands. I use to login with "sudo -l" and then run commands.

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

I'm using "sudo -i" quite a long time in spite of the fact that I do not understand the difference between sudo -s  sudo -i etc.

Tried today this one: devuan_chimaera_4.0.beta-20210927_amd64_netinstall.iso Installation was ok. I have to provide 2 firmware from debian.org. Installed in one partition no encryption with runit for test. But I can not get internet access. The error is wlan0 deauthenticating from by local choice (Reason: 3=DEAUTH_LEAVING).
After some search I got that proposed solutions do not work for me.

Not sudo -i, sudo -l (sudo --login).

When reading the initial post and the thread: Maybe another victim of the path issue? Have you read the (Beowulf) release notes and are you aware of the difference between su and su -?

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

No, I'm installing chimera. Thanks I read this. I was using sudo -i, or root account.

It seems now that problems come from runit. Not sure. I've reinstalled with netinstall, sysvinit and wpa_supplicant works. When runit is installed with "apt" all services start with runit. It's ok. But I've installed qemu/kvm, libvirt and Ko and got an error, something like "sysvinit not found". Runit?

Trying to install with sysvinit from very fresh netinstall iso. Looks much better. I have installed TDE. There are some new issues: virt-manaager complains about polkit, the DE is incapable to mount partition, can not open file with mpv in konkueror only in terminal. Probably I have to install some policy kit? Which one? I suppose DE should have one.

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

I must correct myself. The command to use was "su -I" the same as "su --login", not "sudo -l". I'm so sorry for that stupid mistake.

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop.iso install: multiple problems

thanks.

Finally all these problems come from runit and some issues from TDE itself. Succesfully installed from netinstall with sysvint and TDE. Probably runit is not good with Devuan.

Do you know where I can find an exhaustive list of repos? Does fasttrack exists?

runit is being used on Devuan.  Have a look at some of the threads on this forum.

I have hesitated to answer because I'm not quite sure what you mean by "exhaustive list of repos".  You can poke around any of the pkg mirrors to see what's available or search for a specific package at pkginfo.devuan.org or browse our git

In all my years here since 2014, I  have never heard "fasttrack" used (that I can remember).

The question is . . . does Devuan include it in the Debian merge if not, using Debian repos directly could break things.  I cannot answer that question.  It is not listed on this page: https://devuan.org/os/packages

Yes, added echo 'deb https://fasttrack.debian.net/debian/ bullseye-fasttrack main contrib non-free' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/fasttrack.list

Ok, it means Devuan's one does not exist.

I'm using foreign repos. Usually I need very few packages and install dependencies from original repos. E.g. sparky-polkit is great. Got it from their repo.

Neither devuan nor debian has nomacs in their repos anymore. Pity. It's the best image viewer/redactor, imho. Had to install it from .deb
