[CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

Hi, Have used Cinnamon DE on other Distributions and never had this issue. Advice please!

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X Eight-Core Processor X 8
Memory: 15.6 GiB
Graphics Card: Nvidia Corporation GP108 - and never used Nvidia drivers on any other distro - always use Nouveau.

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

Try installing the firmware-misc-nonfree package, that contains some NVIDIA files which may be needed for nouveau to work properly.

If that doesn't help then please post the output of

glxinfo -B

https://pkginfo.devuan.org/stage/beowul … -1+b1.html

Hi Head_on_a_Stick,

Thanks for your quick response. According to my machine I already have the mesa-utils installed. The output of

glxinfo -B

is in the screenshot below:

I would prefer the output pasted directly here (using code tags) rather than having to let u.pcloud.link run their insidious javascript on my machine but that shows you have no hardware rendering at all.

Do you have the firmware-misc-nonfree package installed?

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

Hi Head_on_a_Stick,

Apologies - I was trying to kill 2 terminals with one screenshot! I use pCloud because my Box account after using for 12 months on another distro for which I wrote the unofficial manual for, was, after users had complained that their download was not working but Box was touting for Business I complained and was promptly told that Box a. Does not support GNU/Linux and b. Does not support Firefox - both of which I had used for uploading my unofficial manual for others to download, so I opted for pCloud following advice from another user of the same OS. Someone recommended another Cloud storage service but that one also doesn't support GNU/Linux. No I don't have that package installed and my attempt to use the terminal to install it proves fruitless so would welcome advice. And thanks for all your help - it is appreciated.

When requesting help about things like this it's always best to post exactly what you tried along with the full terminal output from your attempt(s).

I would make sure that /etc/apt/sources.list has the non-free component present and then use

# apt install firmware-misc-nonfree

Did you try that?

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

Hi Head_on_a_Stick - as my profile states, I've been using GNU/Linux for 18 years - and still learning! I will try and get on the steep learning curve! Based on what the terminal returned I don't have the firmware-misc-nonfree - while replying, does this mean I'm on a hiding to nothing with nouveau drivers? Thanks for your continued help.

[I've signed up for a free imgbb account - hope this has no java! - updated image link accordingly in earlier post but will use returned code in future. Thanks.]

Can we please see this terminal output? I will not be able to help you otherwise.

The nouveau drivers might work for you once the firmware-misc-nonfree package is installed.

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

Thank you. Note that the glxinfo command doesn't need root privileges so you should have just run it as your normal user: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principle … _privilege

Now can we please see the output of this command:

# apt install firmware-misc-nonfree

^ That command does need root privileges (hence the # symbol in front of it).

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

Hi and thanks for your reply - haven't been ignoring you, been having internet issues which sadly appear to be down to my over-use of PowerLine Adapters interfering with the router!

Here is the result of that last command:

is only available from another source

As HoaS Asked earlier . . . do you have "non-free" enabled in your sources.list?

I think I asked somewhere else about this too - If I add "non-free" sources, am I effectively adding proprietary blobs? If so I will just remove Cinnamon DE - I'm getting into the KDE groove at present. wink

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

You will still need "non-free" enabled in your /etc/apt/sources.list for kde/plasma. Just append the string to the end of the uncommented lines... :-)

Only if you install anything from that component. Use vrms to check for any installed blobs in your system.

And as GlennW notes you might still need the proprietary firmware to achieve reasonable performance with your graphics card.

I'm not positive that all of these are good for my system, but these are what I have, running old games (CS:S) with 3d rendering nVidia module.

OK. Thanks for making it clear to me - time to remove Cinnamon DE. My Graphics card is working just fine in KDE. The only blobs I have on my other system currently in use for Work purposes has some specific MS Fonts and Proprietary licenced fonts needed for specialism I work in - KDE Font manager is easier to manage than messing around with ttf-mscorefonts-installer! And in respect of Proprietary Software I get better compatibility with SoftMaker Office for Linux over LibreOffice. Since using SoftMaker Office 2021, my workflow has increased tremendously - it is so much more logically laid out (backend wise) than M$. I was hoping to move completely from FerenOS to Devuan 3.0 for work purposes in a few weeks time. My main sticking point at the moment is a specialist package, Linux version - I will start a separate post for that.

Thanks for everyone's responses. wink

UPDATE - have removed Cinnamon DE and xfce - noticed that both of these had elements of pulse-audio whilst uninstalling via Synaptic Package Manager and one of them had the infamous real-time processor named rtkit - not a rootkit I know but a stupid naming convention by the author of pulseaudio (and author of  systemd). So I now just have KDE and LXQt. Have marked this thread as [CLOSED].

I really do think you want hardware rendering on your desktop even if KDE & LXQt don't nag you about it.

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

I can only speak of previous experience of using prorprietary drivers in the past ended up giving me a worse experience than Nouveau drivers. Even changing the rendering mode bit in Firefox didn't help either. No worries. I am quite happy with the way things are. If it changes I'll read up on it again. Thanks.

I am not talking about the proprietary drivers. The open source nouveau drivers may need the proprietary NVIDA firmware (not driver) for them to work properly and provide hardware acceleration.

Sorry, I don't understand the question but to install the non-free firmware /etc/apt/sources.list should look like this:

deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged beowulf main contrib non-free
deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged beowulf-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged beowulf-security main contrib non-free

Then use

# apt update
# apt install firmware-misc-nonfree

Re: [CLOSED] Logging into Cinnamon DE reports in software render mode!

Thanks Head_on_a_Stick. Have done per your instructions - the confusion came about through a link someone else posted and that linked to similar layout for Debian Buster - hence the question. Your solution provided the answer. Just looked at packages that get installed with Cinnamon and as PulseAudio and rtkit are present by Lennart I have avoided installing. Such a shame Gnome devs are such Numpties! (Just been reading on articles for friend who wants to leave systemd behind for sysinit).

[Just as I was posting this my pc auto shutoff and rebooted - had a similar issue with CoolerMaster PSU earlier this year that got replaced under warranty. This is a thermaltake 650 W - the only other issue might be poor performing antisurge 8-way socket (unswitched) or the Ryzen 7 CPU getting a bit toasty creating thermal cutout!]
