I don't know what I'm doing wrong here. I've edited my sources.list file, then I run
sudo apt update && sudo apt install nvidia-driver
When I go to System Settings > Displays it just shows the default driver, the default display, and nothing about nvidia.
If I run sudo nvidia-settings, I get a window titled NVIDIA X Server Settings with a green nvidia logo at the top of it, with most of it's contens missing. I get an error box that says "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root) and restart the X server."
and the terminal is saying...a bunch of things starting with ERROR: NVIDIA driver is not loaded.
If I go ahead and try running nvidia-xconfig as root, I get a command not found message.
I could use a few suggestions LOL.

Did you install the kernel headers as well as the nvidia-driver package? Did the module build successfully during the installation?
Is nouveau blacklisted?
grep -R nouveau /etc/modprobe.d
I think the proprietary drivers still need an X.Org configuration file for ASCII but you don't need nvidia-xconfig, the file is pretty simple:

Also try lspci | grep -i NVIDIA followed by lspci -v -s 01:00 (replace 01:00 with the first 5 chars of output from the first command). That should show what kernel driver is in use. Post output here if you are not sure what it means.
Also search the forum for CUDA. I had a lot of "fun" getting it working on my system and posted details of what I had to do. They should help.

Did you install the kernel headers as well as the nvidia-driver package? Did the module build successfully during the installation?
Is nouveau blacklisted?

I think the proprietary drivers still need an X.Org configuration file for ASCII but you don't need nvidia-xconfig, the file is pretty simple:

I hesitate to follow advice of things from other distributions. Including Debian. Sometimes it doesn't apply and I end up having to wipe the hard drive and doing a reinstall.

Also try lspci | grep -i NVIDIA followed by lspci -v -s 01:00 (replace 01:00 with the first 5 chars of output from the first command). That should show what kernel driver is in use. Post output here if you are not sure what it means.
Also search the forum for CUDA. I had a lot of "fun" getting it working on my system and posted details of what I had to do. They should help.

Doesn't look like it, the X.Org log shows that nouveau is being attempted.
And if you could edit your post containing that and enclose it in code tags (rather than the quote tags you have used) that would make this thread *much* more readable, thanks.
To install the headers and the rest of the build tools use
# apt install module-assistant
# m-a prepare
Then try installing the nvidia-driver package again, you should see the custom kernel module being built afterwards.

I've successfully trashed my install 2 more times so far today.
Still working on it. It takes 3-hours for me to do a reinstall so I can try again.
I haven't found a way to back-out of failed installs in such a way that I get a workable system.

Install first nvidia-detect to know which nvidia-driver you need to install
First sudo apt install nvidia-detect
then sudo nvidia-detect

I have trouble w/ Proprietary drivers as well. I just leave it at that and try to avoid using them when possible. Others mentioned AMD cards play much much nicer with Devuan.
The Nvidia drivers, are not the ideal firmware. As it install now, it works but it seems some firmware gets left out and persistenced doesn't seem to work which might be a good thing in regards to freedom.

Hello. How do I install Nvidia driver? It is very simple. Add contrib and non-free to your
/etc/apt/sources.list
Then install
nvidia-detect
script:
# apt install nvidia-detect
Run it (as normal user). Here example output:
$ nvidia-detect
Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] [10de:0de1] (rev a1)
Your card is supported by the default drivers.
It is recommended to install the
nvidia-driver
package.
Now, install Linux headers for the kernel you are using. If you are using 4.9 Linux kernel in Devuan Ascii:
# apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's/[^-]*-[^-]*-//')
Then you can install the package:
# apt-get update
# apt-get install nvidia-driver
Restart your system to enable the nouveau blacklist. This method i used on all my machines.

Do not use this method if you have bublebee.

Strongly suggest nvidia-detect as Ogis1975 suggested. Also how old is your card? I've started running into issues where the cards in my systems are no longer supported by the latest and greatest 'nvidia-driver' package. So I've had to install various versions of legacy or manually pull the last supported driver from Nvidia directly (this one made me appreciate how far Linux and Nvidia have progressed ).

I have been holding my tongue as this suggestion offers (or at least used to offer) a painless solution for the technically challenged. At one time I had an nVidia card, maybe 8-10 years ago, and sgfxi installed it perfectly and painlessly. I have no idea if that is still the case but might be worth a try.

I notice after this that I have the nouveau drivers installed.
I've conducted searches on this forum, and it has occurred to me that maybe I've asked the wrong question.
I've been successful in getting both Ubuntu and Xubunto, both with KDE, running on this system, and both with nvidia drivers 435.21.
My 'clue' for the successful install of the nvidia drivers was going into Display Settings and seeing an additional monitor detected, and having to adjust resolution and such. With Devuan, I never see the additional monitor being detected, and that was when I assumed that the install to be a failure.
Having saved the Ubuntu and Xubuntu drives, I've gone back and checked them, and one of the things that stands out is that they have rather lengthy xorg.conf files. I printed hardcopies of those to have for a ready reference, and found them to be identical, and both of them calling for Xinerama. Huh. I wouldn't have thought Xinerama was required these days. Like I keep reading that an xorg.conf isn't needed. or is very short, like 4 lines. I don't know how many lines I have, but with the large 12-point bold font I use (having had 2 eye surgeries this year) it seems to be 1.5 pages long.
So my question might be: how do I get the desktop to recognize I have 2 displays? Or, maybe, How do I install Xinerama?
I notice that the solution someone else used was to change back to xfce.

I didn't read through all the posts and thus don't know if it's related, however, I've had the above (link) 'problem' over and over again when using the repository packed packages of the NVIDIA driver.

Are your sources still as posted earlier? What does APT think is available?
apt policy
You could try aptitude instead, it has a more advanced dependency resolution algorithm and should offer several choices.

I edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file the same way with every install.
I just verified it. I could also try installing the driver nvidia has on their web site. It looked kinda involved, but what I've been doing has been kinda involved.

If you do that then you will have to rebuild the kernel module manually every time the kernel is updated. The Debian package will do that automatically.
Anyway, I think you just need to update your package database:
# apt update
# apt install nvidia-driver
I am presuming here that you have already installed the kernel headers, either directly or with module-assistant.

Let's try debugging the resolver:
apt-get -s -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes install nvidia-driver
It should be installable

Thanks! A suggestion that I had not considered, not knowing about it. Running
apt-get -s -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes install nvidia-driver
did result in ... lot's of activity. but then ended with the same group of lines again
starting with
kde-runtime : Depends: plasma-scriptengine-javascript ... (above)
The next suggestion I did was to install using aptitude. That worked.
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo aptitude install nvidia-driver
I was prompted to accept a solution. And eventually I had a message that said there was a conflict with the nouveau driver, and a reboot would fix it. I rebooted, and I found that version 390.116 nvidia driver is installed. Yay
Oh, and I did have nvidia driver installed using sgfxi for awhile yesterday. That installed a version 440-something, and it was interesting watching that script resolve a lot of issues as they were encountered.

Yes, that script is very clever at getting nVidia installed and blacklisting nouveau etc.
