Avidemux and h264enc

How do you install avidemux?  well besides the confusing way at avidemux.org.  Same with h264enc.  I already have non-free and contrib in sources.list.

Thank you,

Re: Avidemux and h264enc

I did this by using www.deb-multimedia.org, where their stretch distribution is compatible with ascii. It's the usual process of adding the source, update, install their keyring, and then install the packages.

Thus, add to your sources

deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch main

then

apt-get update

then

install deb-multimedia-keyring

then another

apt-get update

then

apt-get install --no-install-recommends avidemux h264enc

and then comment out the source line and update yet again.

That last step is a precaution, to avoid any "accidental" other installations from that repository.

Re: Avidemux and h264enc

Thanks Ralph, coming from Debian I was a little unsure about mixing repos.

Re: Avidemux and h264enc

Yes it's good to be weary about that. Important, really. Especially if you're unsure about how to recover if things break.

At the same time, avidemux is imo the very best tool for e.g., easily and quickly cutting out the ads in a tv streamed Barbie movie you have captured for your granddaughter. Since I have it installed and verified myself, I decided that the benefit of suggesting this action outweighed the general "badness" of proposing this repo mixing.

But you are right, the rule of thumb is still: "don't mix repos" .

Re: Avidemux and h264enc

Off topic . . . personal rant.

I have used avidemux for over a decade to edit video with great success,  Then they went to qt then they dropped the fade filter then went to using time instead of frames so all that frame-based work is no longer compatible with their latest and greatest.  I was not happy about that.  They used to have a flatpak which was the first I'd heard of it.  Read what a flatpak was, said no thank you and decided to stick with an older version from Wheezy on jessie until it refuses to work anymore.

/end rant

This is also off topic . . .

When I tried avidemux (it may have been twice, my memory isn't as good anymore) it was so buggy I got rid of it.

Re: Avidemux and h264enc

I also like h264enc.  Actually I like h264enc better at least for my personal usage.  Yes, avidemux is one resources eating software.
