A quick question: what is the effect of including "beowulf-backports" in sources.list?

I have just noticed that I have it included for one of my machines, but not the other two. My objective doing routine maintenance is to keep the systems up to date, within the bounds of the current stable distribution.

Hi

It has no effetct until you want to install something in backports. You are doing this by telling apt to use backports with "apt install -t beowulf-backports something".

Note that a user would only want to install specific packages from backports if needed. Updating everything in backports could create unpleasant, unintended consequences.

Thanks Golinux. Now I have the definition, and realize that I had used a backports kernel on a very new machine in order to handle ethernet hardware updates that were not recognized by the stable version. In principle, without hardware at the cutting edge, using packages from backports seems not to be necessary. My interest is to have a working system that doesn't require any special features.

This is true for the kernel but there are other cases where using backports might be a good idea. For instance, for a long time the version of certbot in stable was outdated and not working anymore, so it was literally useless while the version from backports worked.

I do consequently use the backports kernels on all my machines. Did that from Squeeze onward for various generations of hardware. Never had any issues.

And every now and then I used bugfixes from backports. But thats rare.

The backported kernels are subject to the mandatory transition delay (because backports can only be taken from testing) so that may leave open known vulnerabilities on your system for longer than necessary.
