Pretty much gave up snapping when everything went digital.....
There was skill in judging the light/aperture/Fstop - & then there was the darkroom....
Those were the good old days......
Edit: I do have a 'modern' hybrid & a 'modern' compact, but they rarely get used, for one thing they are so small, I can barely hold/use them!
I've always favoured Window Managers over Desktop Environents....
All that this means is that a lot of knowledgeable computer users will either build their own or buy pre used equipment free from this crap, so a Windows machine will be like buying a ChromeOS/Android machine, & therefore just have a smaller market potential - computer manufacturers will see their profits fall exponetially.
I have a stock of useable MBR thin clients, & a few UEFI, that can be used in MBR mode too, so I'll be alright......
Also I am using BSD & Haiku on some of these machines, so even if the Corporates take over Linux, I'll be fine....
Using XFCE/Firefox, & having been on the internet for some time now, here is my memory usage.....
$ free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 3731 993 1693 255 1044 2251
Swap: 255 0 255
This shows that the problem is really the KDE desktop.
You seem to be replacing the content each time you 'cp' to the file 'b'.
cp a/*.xx b;cp a/*.yy b;cp a.zz b;cp part*.txt b
There's this old one, you could install & upgrade, but there should be a link to chimaera one too, somewhere, I'll need to take another look online.

Found them!

In the UK, August is the 'silly season' in the press....I'm guessing it must be February on here!
Now, can we go back to discussing Devuan...thankyou.
I abandoned KDE/GNOME many, many years ago, they are just so bloated; normally I would run a WM, but it is very convenient to install from the Devuan Live version of this distro, that I now use XFCE as my primary desktop; I certainly wouldn't want anything heavier/bigger.
I'd be interested in trying an ARM release on my Raspberry Pi 4.
E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock. It is held by process 2652
Try killing 2652 - sudo kill -9 2652

In my experience, this is the first installer that formats the /home partition.
This is wrong and I can give examples of other distributions that don't do this by default.
What is the need for such a solution?
Refractainstaller is just that, it installs the distro, (originally just Refracta), as that was what it was written for - the fact that other distros choose to use it as well is proof that it works for its intended purpose.
It's simple enough, just install to your system partition, & then add your old /home partition to /etc/fstab.
I suggest that you read/re-read the installation instructions, I only ever went wrong when trying to reuse a /home directory, which as stated, isn't supported.
If using refractainstaller, just install to one partition, then alter the /etc/fstab to mount your original, 2nd partition, on /home.
I've always run 'live' & installed from it to disk, & never had any problems.
I've found installing from live distros to be the easiest way to install distros, not just Devuan, to get up & running quickly.
It's been a long time since I've installed from an installation disk!
Edit: The OP's problem may well have been from having his 'home' mounted at the time of installing.
Wonderfully cohesive desktop experience. Just a shame it's so ugly.
That had always been my thought too, but evidently, it's how BeOS used to look, & the weird menu system, but I've started to get used to it, having been trying this O/S off & on over the years.
Another thing that I've read about Haiku, is that it has less code, for the whole system, than there is in the Linux kernel!
It certainly boots up faster!
I'm quite impressed with this beta4 release, wifi was one of the things that clinched it for me, to make it worthwhile installing to bare metal - I now have it installed to an old HP G62 laptop as well.
If you like to try other operating systems, give this one a go, I've got it running on one of my desktop thin clients, & it looks like it is almost ready as a release candidate, but be warned, it is quite a different O/S.
https://www.haiku-os.org/
Runs 'live' if you want, just copy to a pendrive, else install to bare metal.
Check F6 in alsamixer, it may be trying to use the wrong output....
Also, if using pulseaudio, again, check that it is using the right output....
(Default output is HDMI if I remember.)
GPT is easy enough, but getting familiar with EFI took a bit of time, for me, but most of my hardware is MBR, & Devuan Live/XFCE (& NetBSD) work/install on them fine - Devuan also installs to EFI without any problems on my 'newer' machines.
I'd like to see/have a live/installable WM based Devuan - call it Light/Basic/or whatever, just needs a WM, terminal, file browser, web browser to start with, allowing most things to be done that a basic O/S needs - all other software can/could easily be added by the user, as & when needed - with the possibility of persistence, (that would be a big bonus) - but I know we only have a small team who could/can make these things happen, so not expecting it anytime soon......
Yes, if I remember right, you could play video with the likes of mplayer, & maybe have graphics in a text type web browser in a command line installation - it's been a long time since, but I'm pretty sure I used to watch videos.
I think frame buffers allow graphics in the (virtual) terminals, don't they(?).
By the way, do you guys find these fanless machines o.k.? For example something like this?:
https://www.shuttle.eu/de/products/slim/ds10u
That is pretty much what my HP T520 thin clients are, they take an M2 SSD, are silent, & fan free too.
I have been using fan less computers for quite some time now, can't remember when I got my first one, but must be about 5 years ago, maybe more, it's a MSI, about 4" square & 2" high - my most used computer.
Lots of older computers available online pre used, that's where I get all of mine these days.
Towers go quite cheaply, as everyone seem to want small quiet computers these days, (me included).
Take a look at the resellers of company pre used computers on Ebay.
Personally, I don't need anything modern; I can do what you want on an old thin client, so basically, it's just up to you how much you want to spend.
Extra storage can always come in external USB drives - what other expansion were you thinking about(?).
Most distros will load necessary drivers when booting up a computer, as long as the needed drivers can be found on the system.
On Devuan, they are kept in the /Firmware directory, & get loaded by the boot process, I think it is the initrd.img that searches for them & actually loads them into kernel space, ready for using.
