I tried installing firmware-atheros in a live Crowz session using dpkg, but it didn't work. ![]()
Works fine in a Refracta live session. ![]()
Just checked with a live Refracta & my ath9k driver comes in firmware-atheros. ![]()
Devuan is on DistroWatch this week. ![]()
Just in case you haven't noticed - Devuan is on DistroWatch this week. ![]()
@zephyr - I liked what I saw of your OB & JWM versions. ![]()
I think the ath9k is a fairly common chipset.
What I used to do before was just to install Debian nonfree firmware on anything that didn't work out of the box, it only added 14mb.
Whilst I'm back on here, I did notice the default keyboard seemed to be English American, but didn't check to see if it can easily be changed, (setxkb gb), are the other layouts included? (If not, maybe something else to think about.)
@greenjeans - I liked your Mate version, & I don't normally like Desktop Environments, preferring a lightweight window manager. ![]()
For info, the following is how it is seen on my Debian based AntiX system.
Network: Card-1: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter driver: ath9k
IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter>
Card-2: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: r8169
IF: eth0 state: down mac: <filter>
Maybe driver: ath9k is missing(?)
(I'm off for my dinner now.
)
Just tried crowz-1.0_RC_jwm-x64-2017Apr23.iso & it's still not seeing my wifi. ![]()
Just gave it another go, all I get is a box with 'Available Networks' in it, & nothing else. Will try another fresh download.
(First try was with crowz-1.0_RC_ob-x64-2017Apr19.iso )
No wifi 'out of the box' is a killer for me. ![]()
(Just checked out Crowz & Star.)
........I do not want *anything* updating or downloading without my express permission.
That _should_ be the default on all systems.
Devuan has a donation area - https://devuan.org/os/donate
This may also be of interest - https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/message/2 … 3a.en.html
(I just contributed a little bit more as we hit RC 1.0.)
I seem to be the first to download - never had that experience before! ![]()
....it's unabashedly a little crunchbang-ish, but less austere.
I used to run #! until it was to be no longer supported, went over to AntiX, been there ever since. ![]()
I like the Devuan project so have been keeping an eye on Devuan based distros.
I've installed both Refracta & Miyo & taken them for a run, liked what I see, & liking what you are doing here.
This kind of distro is what a lot of experienced users require, enough to get up & running with internet, especially wifi, which some leave out. ![]()
Have you thought about using captcha - http://captcha.net/
I have to agree, this is a far better place to be than Devuan Discourse, (I can't even remember how to post on there!), a great resource for Devuan followers. ![]()
After the initial Debian 'dictatorship' decided that systemd was going to be 'the Debian way', I quickly looked around for alternatives, as they said there was to be no other init system, but they saw people leaving, & so capitulated, to 'allow' other init systems, but that dreaded systemd was so integrated, it was not easy to get a Debian install without the 'virus', so that is why I followed Devuan, but like you, waited for an installable ISO. ![]()
I also re aquainted myself with OpenBSD, just in case. ![]()
Oh, I don't know, that just seems to confirm what a waste of space systemd is.......... ![]()
If you don't already know.
From a terminal, or a script linked to your menu, you should be able to use shutdown or poweroff.
I've been using AntiX for several years now, they build their system free of systemd from the Debian base.
They have 3 versions, core, base, & full.
Core is the very basics for you to install what you want, but from memory, doesn't do wifi out of the box.
Base, which is my preferred version, gives you a Fluxbox desktop, with Firefox ESR & several useful programs ,out of the box.
Full, gives you a choice of window managers, IceWM by default, & everything you'd expect from a normal distro included.
MX, gives you a full XFCE experience, created by the AntiX developers & Mepis user base.
I used to use Debian, then #! (Crunchbang), before coming to AntiX, which is very stable & has a friendly forum.
AntiX did assess using Devuan as it's base, but stuck with Debian when it could be installed minus systemd.
Devuan is the product of ex Debian developers, who don't want any contamination from systemd, & that is why I'm here. ![]()
Thanks - grabbed a copy. ![]()
[MIYO] Nice basic distro that is basically just internet access out of the box, uses Openbox, you get to add the programs that you want.
[Refracta] Good lightweight desktop experience, uses xfce, has tools to create your own personal version. Some might have a problem with wifi as some (supplied) firmware may be needed to be installed before you can connect to the internet.
Edit: Installed Miyo to a pendrive, & Refracta to a laptop.
All I can say is that when you use 'purge' you zap all configs as well as the apps, I think you should just use 'remove', but wait for a proper explanation from someone who knows the correct proceedure. ![]()
I'm not sure which one I'm actually using in this instance, if there isn't much difference, then 'uname -a' wouldn't really say much. ![]()
I installed 'a' 64 bit system to a pendrive, but have updated it in situ, so whilst I have 2 versions downloaded, one has a modified date of 28 Nov, the other has 11 Dec, so this one I'm using may very well be less than the latest, sorry about that. ![]()
From a personal perspective, I don't encrypt, nor do I use a /boot partition, but I only use one kernel, so I was just wondering if you would really need more space, after all, 2 kernels are only taking up 25% of the available space.
