I tried the tools on a PcLinuxOs-Live yesterday, but still got similar errors.
I'm considering option 2. resetting the bios so as to install an msdos mbr with UEFI before I do anything else.
I'd had so much good fortune with my laptop.
One of the last things I did a few days ago was to remove the ssd from the laptop and do a clean install to it from this desktop box/machine
I'll have another crack at it over the weekend.
Thanks for your help and tips.
The disk and os boots fine with a bootable flashdrive, like super-grub-disk.
So I gather I have wiped the mbr part of the ssd when I repartitioned and reformatted, and the bios no longer sees the ssd as a bootable drive.
It replied, "no errors reported"
But the same error appears on reboot. insert proper disk
@stultumanto
You need to install grub to the disk, not the partition, i.e., 'grub-install /dev/sda' not 'grub-install /dev/sda2'.
OK, I'll do that now.
@rolfie: Thank you, I always boot in legacy bios mode where and when I can, to avoid the esp shims and signing.
I made up my mind a long time ago, and always use legacy boot. But my laptop is a slightly different scenario.
It just has to work.
I do know from experience that most of the iso have a similar installer function.
I might try the PcLinuxOs iso, just to see if that gets me out of this situation.
There is an upside to using the grub-super...iso, if the laptop gets lost it will be hard to use without the usb as a key..
The os is installed, I can boot into and start at the slim login manager, with the grub-super-iso.
The bios shows the ssd is installed and connected, as usual.
In the bios, I changed PXE to enable... just gives info on the network device, also
intel security, theft to off.
I used gdisk to set the 1st partition as bootable, but should that be the partition where the /boot directory is?
I can try again, btw, all the partitions and data are intact after the gdisk operation.
still working on it.
Thank you fred.
...to boot gpt in legacy mode, you need a partition that is at least 1MB, unformatted and bios_grub flag
I had this before and the bios gave the error above, this is why I am asking.
I just rebooted the laptop and it gives the same error. edit...
I got through the install but when I rebooted (quite a few times after subsequent re-installs) I get a bios error like
insert a bootable disk, disk not found.
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
partmon gave a warning the the kernel would not be aware of the change until rebooted.
When selecting the bios (esc) it shows only the cdrom as a bootable device (no usb inserted).
I have that iso, exegnulinux... but even after several installs, I get the same bios error.
wip
Well, I got xfce4 installed, but I had to use grub-super-boot... to boot the install.
I still have the same boot error, ... no disk found.
I haven't seen in gparted a "make bootable" flag that sticks.
I started gdisk,
selected /dev/sda
p = print gpt table (protected mbr)
x = expert
a = attributes
1 = partition number (found no fields set)
2 = legacy bios bootable
w = write (gives ominous warning "all partitions will be deleted")
ready to reboot...
I haven't found one (a log file) for the network device after startup (boot and init) but the place to search is /var/log/
I did see references in user.log sys.log and dmesg, but mostly early initialisation.
user.log tells me cron is complaining about not have mta for internal mail (to nobody but me) but doesn't explain the drop outs.
I think if I were to search further, I would check the logs inside the modem/router, But I am not suppose to access the modem, It's not mine.
Hi, thanks for all the replies.
@aluma: I've already wiped the drive (again), but I'll keep the super iso for emergencies.
Sorry for not waiting. I get a bit tenacious.
@rolfie: Thank you for your summary... I've read so many descriptions, and forgotten a bit, on my main PC box I use legacy and GPT.
I want to try that (legacy and GPT) on my laptop, and will give it another go today after re-partitioning.
I found the Trinity install a bit confusing... with partition (it just my brain) of /usr /var /boot/ / /tmp swap and /home and might try using the Full ISO and converting to trinity afterwards.
The other problem I had was I was trying to start the gui, but had forgotten I only installed xfce4 and not plasma... :-)
I seem to get myself into sticky situations faster than flash-gordon.
I get those too, but I had a feeling it was the old wifi router at this place.
I don't get the start-up prob... I turn the wifi off before I shutdown for the night to avoid surprises
(I start the vpn, proxy and ptunnel manually, but the nft firewall starts with sysinit)
I'd be interested to see what may cause the drop-outs.
Hi, I run a script as well as from time to time look at grc's shields-up.
nmap -v -A scanme.nmap.org
nmap -v -sS -p1-9000 -iL > /home/glenn/build/logs/ip/ip.txt (edit, added redirection > to file)
and for local net info...
netstat -r
netstat -i
and amongst that script I also have,
lynis audit system -Q --pentest
@aluma, I haven't seen that response from shields-up since I stopped using M$win
One Day At A Time.
Hi, thank you for all the replies.
I am avoiding any M$ crap, if possible.
I partitioned the disk with gpt.
I have switched off fastboot, and secureboot in the bios.
Also I have the disk recognised using ahci.
CSM is ENABLED.
Because this is a different machine, here is the partitioning table list from,
lsblk
loop0 ... clip
sda 8:0 0 238.5G 0 disk
-sda1 8:1 0 2M 0 part
-sda2 8:2 0 23.4G 0 part
-sda3 8:3 0 8.4G 0 part
-sda4 8:4 0 3.5G 0 part
-sda5 8:5 0 3.5G 0 part
-sda6 8:6 0 16.6G 0 part
-sda7 8:7 0 183G 0 part
sdb ... (devuan-live memory stick)
-sdb1 ... clip
... clip
sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom
I wrote UEFI, but I may have meant EFI.
installing Devuan Trinity, gpt disk, non-uefi boot error
If I am to re-install an OS to the laptop, I must get past this partitioning problem.
My memory fails me, but I'm beginning to think that the laptop was using efi-boot, with fastboot and secureboot switched off.
In my old notes I have a 199.2Mb fat partition.
I may have changed this at some time, without reinstalling the OS, and maybe that is why I'm not familiar with the boot time grub errors.
I only use it when I'm away from home and need a PC. Like travelling, holidays, house-sitting, etc.
There is no personal data at risk... so I may reinstall, but boot from the efi section of the flash-drive and then see if the install progresses past the grub-install section.
The last attempt, last evening I continued past the error, but on reboot could login but not start a gui. ( now I remember I installed xfce4, not plasma, lol)
Anyhow, I wanted to install trinity, because I like (familiar with) kde systems.
I downloaded and dd'd to a stick super_grub2_disk,
dd bs=512k if=/home/glenn/Downloads/super_grub2_disk_hybrid_2.02s10.iso of=/dev/sde status=progress && sync
But didn't find a way to install/reinstall grub. So, I must have changed the partitioning scheme and borked the install on my own.
Anyhow, life's an adventure, and I'm always open to a new truth & still learning.
Thanks again
Hi, I am trying to install trinity on to my laptop. Asus n550jv
I wiped the old partitions off and setup partitions on the 238.5Gb ssd as
/dev/sda1 2mb bios-grub
/dev/sda2 46.9Gb /
/dev/sda3 4.1Gb swap
/dev/sda4 187.5Gb /home
I got through the install but when I rebooted (quite a few times after subsequent re-installs) I get a bios error like
insert a bootable disk, disk not found.
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
This laptop only has a cdrom and the ssd. I'm using a devuan-Trinity (kde) off a memory-stick.
If I try to install-grub /dev/sda2, I get an error...
install-grub: error: failed to get canonical path
This laptop has no other OS installed.
It doesn't seem to matter what I try now, after an install from a live-distro, the laptop can't find the bootable drive.
When I check the drive partitions, it seems to be intact. But the bios can't find the info to boot.
Daedalus/plasma was working fine, I thought I would try to reduce the overheads to get more time out of the new battery.
The sata mode is set as ahci.
Is there a glaring solution I'm not seeing?
tia, Glenn
Thanks zapper...
Hi fanderal, thank you for your post.
I've tested ports at grc_com going back to WinXP days.
me too, and I agree.
I keep finding some ports open, like telnet and LP...
I used zonealarm with winxp and it seemed secure enough to stop all but serious targeted attacks (which I had no evidence of, or effects)
Facebook was stealing members' contact lists and sending invites to contacts in the member's name. Dunno if they still do it but I've stayed away from social networks since then.
I think FB is still doing that. Any of my actual friends have denied trying to contact me via those methods.
I'll have a read of the schneier post very soon. I find this topic very interesting, to say the least.
I must say, I am not a gold digger and I don't have anything to steal, or hide for that matter but it's annoying when the pc crashes.
But please keep in mind that since I reseated the nvme ssd I haven't had any crashes.
So, as educational as this experience has been it seems more and more that this was my mistake,
poor eyesight when I installed and started using the nvme drive.
Thank you for the info.... I am in the process of weening myself off FB and google apps, including email and chat.
What have you tried with rfkill?
I currently do not have rfkill installed, although I have seen some info on rfkill... like this web page
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-manage-wifi-interfaces-with-rfkill-command-on-linux
... by interface ID or type for BT and wifi.
from another page suggests iwconfig... is power management enabled?
@ zapper
Oh,...my bad, I didn't mean to leave out the kernel... like "madaiden's" page.
I am talking about the entire system, motherboard controls, booting and the OS.
Only Devuan for security (keeping things out), the other os's are for test-driving and ideas.
Thank you, saving bandwidth is precisely why I want to try it.
I'll be 75 If I live that long to make it to 2038. I hope I/we figure out a solution before that.
Seems like it's just part of the progression of Moore's law. We have 64bit for a lot of things already...
I guess it will depend if the Corps want to spend the money or not. Their investment will profit either way, imho.
I remember the computers at work were similar in how they worked,
first I had to start the machine, go and get a coffee (because it would take so long), login to the network and then proceed to load the programs I would need for the day.
This was long before I had any interest in computing, it was just work (selling spare parts for transport (people) air conditioning in the 80's)
I'm not sure what brand they were. But I loved getting the office girl to help me create macros to simplify my job.
I see your point, swanson. And I feel the same way, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It's getting more and more like M$ file systems.
What I'd like to see is a selection box in the installer program for stand-alone PC's, no extra networking or accessibility fluff doing nothing.
I see the usr-merge as another step towards breaking older systems. "You'll need to pay a tech to fix that!" remember y2k?
The game, the hack or the movie?
Thanks Unixman1230, I'll definitely try this soon.
One thing I've been doing for quite some time is backing-up /root, /boot and /etc to a folder in my home directory partition.
This allows me to reinstate any config files I have changed/customised.
Of course you will require a separate partition for /home and not format it during an install.
But this apt-cdom approach may alleviate that concern.
I have tried mounting iso's, but generally get an error about either no release file or checksums.
Thanks again.
Thank you for the heads-up! I'll keep this in mind for when I do my next clean install. I've avoided usrmerge up until now, I have read about it.
