Unless something happens, and if this stinkin' internet here cooperates, I hope to have both 32 and 64 bit versions of Miyo-i3 uploaded to Sourceforge tomorrow.... tongue  LOL!  I'll upload screenshots and the download link after they're available.

Until then, I'm giving these bad boys a real testin' with some Trans Siberian Orchestra. wink

Building the 64 bit.

I'll not post about it here any more. The next post will be in the Derivatives forum...when I have them uploaded to Sourceforge and ready for downloads.

Still not sure why I started this in this forum... tongue

This may sound strange, but try running...

apt-get update

...first. Then try installing UFW.

I'm writing this from a freshly installed Miyo-i3 32 bit alpha (Jessie version).  On this machine (a 64 bit), it's booting up at around 85 Mbs of RAM. yikes

Just a little bit of background:

When '/etc/network/interfaces' (or any one of its sourced files) includes a line "auto eth0", it is a signal to the networking init script, that it should bring up eth0 on boot. That init script has been improved to not consider the cable status, but simply bring up the interface and run dhclient for getting it configured.

When '/etc/network/interfaces' (or any one of its sourced files) includes a line "allow-hotplug eth0", it is a signal to udev, that it should bring up eth0 on boot (and also keep monitoring for later cable events). Its control script has been improved to not consider the cable status, but simply bring up the interface and run dhclient for getting it configured.

Of course, dhclient is only used as part of bringing up the interface if '/etc/network/interfaces' also has the line 'iface eth0 inet dhcp'.

If you are using a network manager, then you should avoid telling the networking init script or udev to bring up eth0, but rather let the network manager daemon deal with it. Whether that induces a boot delay or not depends on whether it has been improved in parity with the scripts.

btw, for the sake of clarity: I write 'improved' but I mean 'destroyed'.

Thank you r.r; I appreciate it sir.

Yet, I'm still confused. Yes, I include a network manager in my builds; however, I follow a guideline in how I build. Therefore, all builds are the same, yet some builds have this delay while others don't. Strange...strange indeed. smile

golinux wrote:

Are you booting without a connection?  https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/message/2 … ed.en.html

Well, on my builds with the delay, the delay only occurred if the Ethernet wasn't plugged in. If I had an Ethernet wire plugged in, there was no delay. Still haven't figured out why some builds have this issue and some don't.

#964 Re: Other Issues » ifup wait at boot » 2017-12-19 00:19:26

I've tried everything in this thread, and none of it helped me with the delay at start-up in Ascii.

As I build all of my systems from a base system, there have been times that I haven't experienced the delay on some Ascii builds, but at other times, I did.

So, I compared a "delay build" with a "no-delay build". I eventually ended up replacing the "network" file in a "delay build" with the one from a "no-delay build" found in /etc/intid.d/networking.

That got rid of the delay, and the boot process flies again to my login screen. However, I now have a "Failure" notification in networking during the boot process. It goes so fast that I can't catch enough of it to write it down. Yet, networking works perfectly after booting into the desktop. Might take some more investigating.

The prep for Miyo-i3 is coming along nicely.

I've used i3 in the past, and found it quite enjoyable. I installed it on an Ascii build recently, and I've been playing around with it again. Uses less resources than Openbox, but it's not for everyone...if you're unfamiliar with i3, it's a tiling window manager, and most things are controlled via the keyboard.

It's fun to use though, and once you get used to it, it's kind of addictive.

Might consider making a Miyo-i3 edition. wink

#975 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] Menu fix if a user has upgraded to Ascii... » 2017-12-12 03:49:00

Here's the latest...and hopefully...the best menu fix for the Obmenu-Generator menu in MiyoLinux if a user upgrades from Jessie to Ascii (and from Ascii to Ceres...see final note). I've tested it, and it works perfectly. Plus, it will give you the latest version of Obmenu-Generator. smile  This looks like a lot, but it only takes a couple of minutes...

AFTER UPGRADING...

You'll have no menu, but you'll need to open your file manager. If it's on the panel, no problem; otherwise, use the keyboard shortcut to open it...W=Windows key...

W + f

You can also open it with gmrun...

Alt +F2

You can also open it with the terminal...if that's on your panel, no problem; otherwise, use the keyboard shortcut...

CTRL + ALT + t

Now...

1. Save a copy of your schema.pl somewhere where you can easily find it (the schema.pl is found in ~/.config/obmenu-generator)

2. While you're in that same obmenu-generator folder, DELETE everything in it but keep the folder.

3. Open PCManFM as root, go to /usr/bin and delete the obmenu-generator file there.

4. Just to be sure, run the following command as root in the terminal...

apt-get remove obmenu-generator

Now the fun part...

5. Two of these three packages may already be installed, so try installing them one at a time in your terminal. It will tell you if you already have "the latest version"...

apt-get install git
apt-get install build-essential
apt-get install cpanminus

6. After that, run the following command (don't use su or sudo...just enter this command as written)...

git clone git://github.com/trizen/obmenu-generator

7. As root (su or sudo), enter the following command...

cp obmenu-generator/obmenu-generator /usr/bin

8. Run this command WITHOUT using su or sudo...

cp -r obmenu-generator/schema.pl ~/.config/obmenu-generator/

9. As su or sudo, run...

cpanm Linux::DesktopFiles

10. As su or sudo, run...

cpanm Data::Dump

11. As su or sudo, run...

chmod +x /usr/bin/obmenu-generator

12. WITHOUT su or sudo, run...

obmenu-generator -p -i

That should give you "the" obmenu-generator menu back, but it's not your menu.

13. So, with PCManFM still open (not the root file manager), navigate to the obmenu-generator folder (if you're not already there). Open it, and open the config.pl file with your text editor. If you enable line numbers, go to line 49, and change the name of the editor to "leafpad" (or the text editor that you're using).

Then go to line 71, and change the name of the terminal to "lxterminal" (or the terminal that you're using).

Save and close the file.

14. Replace the current schema.pl file with the one that you saved...(copy, paste, overwrite).

You should now have your old menu back...try it. smile

Post install note: You will have an extra obmenu-generator folder in your regular home folder...it can safely be deleted.

FINAL NOTE: If a user HAS ALREADY upgraded from Ascii to Ceres AND ALREADY fixed the menu according to these instructions, the only thing that is required is to open your terminal and run the following command...

cpanm Linux::DesktopFiles

...that should give you the menu back, otherwise, you will need to follow the complete instructions as outlined above if you haven't already upgraded to Ascii first AND fixed the menu.
