Yes, ConsoleKit2 is what I meant. Would be nice to see it make a comeback. :-)

Did you try just simply 'sudo synaptic'? That's what I have to do from the terminal in dwm on antiX to get synaptic running. If I recall correctly, pkexec commands just spit out errors in that environment.

Yes, this works. But this bypasses the point of polkit.

Yes, I just figured this out so I restored my timeshift snapshot from before.

Head_on_a_Stick wrote:

Any particular reason why you've switched to consolekit?

Well, elogind is extracted from systemd. I don't see why consolekit needed to be replaced, as distros I've tried that still use it (such as PCLinuxOS) work just fine, and since it was still in Devuans repositories (its not in Debians) I wanted to see if it would work. It doesn't, unless you rebuild any components that use the elogind flag.

I'm having problems with authentication on Devuan Chimaera with Xfce. I recently replaced elogind with consolekit2 (provided by the consolekit package). Everything seems to work fine, although when logging out not all services that were started will quit. There is also a larger issue related to the authentication.

When trying to run programs like synaptic-pkexec, I get the following error:

polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie
==== AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===

This incident has been reported.

This is what /var/log/auth.log says:

Feb 11 11:46:01 B550M polkitd(authority=local): Registered Authentication Agent for unix-process:7893:242677 (system bus name :1.203 [pkexec /usr/sbin/synaptic], object path /org/freedesktop/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale en_US.UTF-8)

I've tried with both mate-polkit and gnome-polkit with the same result.

I always had trouble with KDE Plasma and Wayland. I've cursed it and wished it to hell. But your post triggered me yesterday to try it again (Daedalus).

I should rephrase my use of KDE. I like KDE applications, I do not like KDE Plasma. I can't stand the flat Breeze theme and similar to GNOME's Adwaita it sticks to everything. Trying to make Plasma look a bit more like pre-Plasma is hopeless. I hope LiquidShell gets developed more and makes its way into Devuan one day (who knows, I could package it). I typically use Trinity desktop, but the really old Qt version and inability to keep up like MATE has driven me away.

The newer Plasma versions after Chimaera have improved Wayland support by a lot. I'm ready to see what Daedulus will bring, if I'm still running Plasma by then..

Really, I've been having a desktop identity crisis the past 2 weeks. I just stuck with KDE.

I would use Wayland but in the latest stable its buggy as hell on KDE, especially with Flatpaks.

Hey, that worked. Thanks!

Is 'pipewire' the only killall needed to end all pipewire processes when I exit icewm?

Hi all,

I migrated a Debian machine over to Devuan. I have the backport of pipewire for better support for wireplumber. It worked flawlessly on Debian but it was started there with systemctl --user. When I migrated to Devuan, I now get "Dummy Output" in Pavucontrol even though pactl shows:

Server Name: PulseAudio (on PipeWire 0.3.63)
Server Version: 15.0.0

I am using icewm, so I added pipewire and pipewire-pulse to the startup file, but I still have no sound. Any ideas?

#60 Re: Devuan » Devuan kFreeBSD » 2022-10-14 13:24:18

I agree with Camtaf, if I'm going to use the FreeBSD kernel I would rather use FreeBSD (and I do). The FreeBSD kernel is made for the operating system.

on the same newer laptops, with windows (7 or10) the sound is MUCH better!

AFAIK, its not possible in Chimaera because pipewire replacing pulseaudio uses some systemd magic, at least in the wiki page for it.

I for one notice no difference at all from either, they serve a similar purpose. If apulse worked with flatpaks I would gladly get rid of pulseaudio/pipewire.

#62 Re: Other Issues » No Sound ALSA » 2022-10-06 22:07:51

Is Pulseaudio showing "Dummy Output"? I'm having the same issue on a Core 2 Duo machine I have set up with Devuan.

EDIT: Re-read it, forget about the above

#63 Re: Other Issues » Featured in Discover (KDE Plasma) not working » 2022-10-05 23:00:36

Can confirm the same issue now. I used to not like Discover or Plasma in general but they've grown on me, Discover reminds me of "Pamac" on Manjaro years ago.

Thierrybo, that is a great explanation. I guess its better to wait, at least we can just browse through the categories manually for now.

#64 Re: Off-topic » Your thoughts on: TheCaseForTheUsrMerge » 2022-10-05 22:56:25

@User479: Just read that part in the Debian wiki and installed "usrmerge". :-)

I think that its great for Devuan to make it optional, after all we're all here because Debian likes to slowly force things.

#65 Re: Off-topic » Your thoughts on: TheCaseForTheUsrMerge » 2022-10-05 16:07:17

I don't think UsrMerge hurts anything, it should make porting applications easier for everybody. For once the arguments that Lennart (I assume thats who wrote that freedesktop article) gave actually make sense here. When the option comes I will probably switch over.

#66 Re: Freedom Hacks » To permanently block installation of Pulseaudio. » 2022-10-05 16:02:01

I use flatpaks so I at least need one or the other and I get unstoppable popping with both Pipewire and Pulseaudio.

This sounds like a good news : PipeWire 0.3.31 https://www.reddit.com/r/MXLinux/commen … chpad_ppa/

Pipewire is just as much of a cancer as pulseaudio, if not worse. It did not "magically solve" my popping issues, even after extensive configuration with media-session and wireplumber both.

I find ALSA to work out of the box on Devuan so long as you set the default card to the right one. And don't install from tasksel, I found out the hard way that I had that crap and it already messed everything up.

Speaking of GTK3, why hasn't GTK2 been forked yet? The vast majority of desktop environments use GTK, and not a single one has put their foot down and said GTK2 is as good as it gets. Not even MATE, which is supposed to let GNOME 2 live on. Now we're stuck in a situation where you either use a toolkit with built-in window decoration and Adwaita crap or one with Breeze crap and the rest of KDE's mess on top of it. Pick your poison.

#69 Re: Off-topic » Xfce 4.18 at Christmas » 2022-10-02 13:25:57

CSD has ruined GTK, and I can't think of many good Qt apps that don't pull in an arm and a leg.

Just installed Devuan and chose KDE in the task selector, how horrendous. Also I thought Chimaera removed dependencies on pulseaudio in the task selector? I used aptitude to resolve removing that crap pronto but its not completely resolved.

What environment do Devuan users use?

More GTK3 more intractable CSD more skinny bars It's turning into a less usable and fuglier cluster**** . . . IMO of course . . .

I thought Xfce has been off GTK2 for at least the past couple years. Fortunately I saw an issue and a following commit on the Xfce gitlab page for making the CSD optional. There will be a button in the settings menu to turn off CSD in libxfce4ui. I don't like Xfce in the first place but that is nice at the very least.

#71 Re: Off-topic » Xfce 4.18 at Christmas » 2022-10-02 00:15:17

I'm on FreeBSD about to come back to Devuan with Plasma probably. What happened with the new release of Xfce? The CSD? They added an option for CSD to be turned off in the settings menu.

I was going to download the Dolphin Emulator today but it seems to be missing in Chimaera's and even the backports repository. I decided to look it up, and discovered that it's available in OldOldStable (Ascii), Beowulf, and Ceres: https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/policy-query.html?c=package&q=dolphin-emu&x=submit

It seems to be the same in Debian itself. Why is that? Some kind of news I'm missing? I can build it from source but it would be less of a hassle to see it in the stable repositories like it is in both OldStable and Unstable. Its been the same version for years.

My experience has been very similar, sadly. Before I had a computer my entertainment system had an outboard mixer... Plug anything in and go.

I just gave it another go and discovered if I didn't change any defaults in /etc/asound.conf and instead changed the order for snd-hda-intel chips in /etc/modprobe.d then everything just seems to work. I have both pulseaudio and pipewire blacklisted. Maybe adding more to the configuration is what ruined it for me, but dmix seems to be turned on by default.

I've been stuck to using FreeBSD which uses OSS for a while because of the cancer that is pulse/pipewire and ALSA, the purist alternative, didn't seem to "just work". OSS is much like that, plug and go. It can even handle software mixing well. Thankfully this worked, because otherwise I would have to deal with a constant popping noise regardless of the distro and regardless of what changes I made to pulseaudio or pipewire. I tried using Debian itself without systemd and well... Now I see why Devuan is so important.

That's a bit off-topic. Nice mixer I should say altor. smile

#74 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » amixer-gtk » 2022-09-18 16:45:11

I'd also like to go ALSA-only, but ALSA configuration is quite confusing.

I think the best I could do is get applications like Firefox to have working sound, but Steam and others did not (even with apulse).
