Sigh . . . that wasn't the point either . . .

#652 Re: Devuan » New Devuan user here » 2023-12-18 17:31:50

@quickfur . . .  That wasn't the point. The point was that some of the packages in that list are not connected to Devuan's "magic" to work around systemd.

I have done this more than once. It 'just works' to have only one drive available for the install. smile You can also use uuid magic to sort it . . .

#654 Re: Off-topic » I'm Back » 2023-12-16 17:10:38

I have never installed pulseaudio. Always used apulse and alsa. There were some audio issues with jitsi early on. And folks still have intermittent issues. A lot depends on your hardware. KISS works best.

#655 Re: DIY » Announcement of the OpenMATE desktop environment » 2023-12-16 16:09:04

This is a welcome project. I did use Mate a long time ago but at some point wandered off to Xfce. If I were more adventurous, I'd give it a spin. But in time Xfce might just provide enough 'incentive' to push me back to Mate! Do keep us posted . . .

#656 Re: Devuan » New Devuan user here » 2023-12-16 01:54:04

These packages in DelTomix's list above have been forked not for technical reasons relating to Debian's systemd 'lock-in' but to customize the iconic Devuan desktop themes. There may also be other packages not tied to systemd:

Package: clearlooks-phenix-cinnabar-theme
Package: clearlooks-phenix-darkpurpy-theme
Package: clearlooks-phenix-deepsea-theme
Package: clearlooks-phenix-lightpurpy-theme
Package: clearlooks-phenix-sapphire-theme

Amprolla is the package that works the magic of integrating Debian repos with Devuan. I posted this link in the other thread but guess you missed it:
https://git.devuan.org/devuan/amprolla3

Here is a summary of amprolla from the Devuan Conference.

Now THERE'S an answer. Thanks DelTomix!  big_smile

#660 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Claws-mail themes after upgrade to Daedalus » 2023-12-14 16:47:19

You might want to check if the other Devuan themes misbehave in a similar way. I only played with the colors in the theme(s) except for a few times that I needed help from the XFCE folks. Oh and yes . . . the background for all the themes has been a light version of the dominant color.

#661 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Claws-mail themes after upgrade to Daedalus » 2023-12-14 15:57:31

@Geoff 42 . . . Most of the Daedalus theming was done 2 years ago and only tested on xfce and my setup which is chimaera.  I have no idea how it interacts with claws. Over the years, csd and gtk3 have raised havoc with the clearlooks-phenix theme. Since I am now out of the theming business after almost 10 years, someone will either have to step up to take on that task or users will have to live with what Debian provides and/or the old Devuan themes which will still be available in the repos and on Devuan's git store.

This is the KDE5 project, it is “heavier” than the Trinity I use. If I just install it, it will pull a bunch of Qt5 libraries with it

Falkon piqued my interest but as soon as I found out it was KDE that was it. I actually installed KDE once in its early days. It didn't last long for the reasons mentioned above and that everything was so 'twitchy' and I would be spending too much time turning off all that ADD-inducing garbage . . .

#663 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » A lightweight irc client??? » 2023-12-12 02:02:14

I started using xchat with jessie now it's hexchat in chimaera. That's the default in Xfce . . . It is text based. No html. The on line version can be found at https://libera.chat/ but then you won't have logs locally. parazyd had to nursemaid me through the setup . . . I am not an irc nerd so can't help beyond that. Looking forward to seeing you there! You can share your humor in the #devuan-offtopic channel! Hehehe . . .

PS. Channel logs are here

I figured as much. A month or so ago there were glowing AI reviews on distrowatch with the same vapid style.

The funky formatting on the copy/paste was a nice touch. Is anybody there?

#674 Re: Devuan » The insanity continues... BSOD coming to a systemd near you? » 2023-12-03 16:25:36

To authoritatively answer UnixMan1230's question above:

<golinux> Question about the "banned packages list". Are they banned because there are insurmountable entanglements and they CAN'T be forked or because they aren't worth the effort.
<golinux> IOW is the metric technical or judgmental . . .
<LeePen> golinux: which banned list are you asking about?
<golinux> LeePen: https://pkgmaster.devuan.org/bannedpackages.txt
<golinux> I didn't know that there was more than one list . . .
<LeePen> The actual banned list is just 'systemd, systemd-sysv, file-rc, reportbug-ng'
<LeePen> The list that you refer to is produced by amprolla as it recursively excludes anything else that has those as a dependency.
<LeePen> Or as a result of the source being forked already.
<LeePen> The item in [] after the package explains why it is banned.
<LeePen> e.g apticron-systemd.[systemd]
<LeePen> or bsdextrautils.[d1src:util-linux]
<LeePen> Actually reportbug-ng and file-rc have disappeared from Debian, so the basic banned list is just systemd and systemd-sysv.
<LeePen> Everything else follows as a consequence.
<LeePen> So, technical.
<golinux> So a hard dependency on 'systemd, systemd-sysv' is the reason?
<LeePen> Yes, either directly or indirectly.

I have always assumed that it was not possible to fork those banned packages for technical dependency reasons . . .
