#351 Re: ARM Builds » Any Chimaera Rpi3/4 builds in the pipeline? » 2021-09-21 08:42:59

Thanks for your response, if there will be some images coming, I can wait for them, & much appreciate it if you do make them. smile

#352 Re: Installation » How to partition my disk ? » 2021-09-18 09:15:23

My personal configuration is basically twice what you think you need for the root (/) partition, equal swap (/swap) with ram (if you want to 'hibernate'), (else what you think you want), the rest is for home (/home) - (which you will back up to external media every so often, in case you ever have to re install, or your disk goes bad).

#353 Re: Off-topic » The rise of Artix and decline of Arch on Distrowatch » 2021-09-16 16:59:16

AntiX is a good systemd free distro, I only left it because they were adding too many things to the standard (top layer) menus; I hate unnecessary menu items. wink

#354 Re: Off-topic » The rise of Artix and decline of Arch on Distrowatch » 2021-09-15 08:52:45

The 'ratings' come from people who generally like to try new distros, they are not a popularity rating.

Once people find the distro for them, they seldom go back to Distrowatch, plus these are weekly download figures, many distro hoppers just download to try out new distros, & seldom stay with them more than a few weeks.

#355 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Blanking screen » 2021-09-14 09:17:32

I'd been having screensaver problems for a long time - nowadays, I just increase the time before activation to a ridiculously long time, like 3 days!

(Power saving - everything set to 'never'.)

#357 Re: Installation » Could not install under UEFI with chimera netinstall » 2021-09-11 08:48:57

I think that I once had to manually create an EFI partition on one of my disks, before running the installer, (not sure if it was Devuan or another distro), then mark it as 'boot' & something else with 'manage flags' when partitioning - may or may not work for you.

#358 Re: Installation » Can't overcome 'grub minimal edit shell' problem » 2021-09-08 17:46:38

Maybe try (re)installing grub via a 'live' USB drive session(?).

I always use dd - try using that, mine worked fine on a chromebook.

I can't: I only have one PC, a secondhand Lenovo T550 with Windows 10, which I bought to convert to Linux. That's why I bought a Debian USB. Then a friend suggested Devuan ...

I have used a Windows version before, there is one here - http://www.chrysocome.net/dd

You could also use your Debian 'live' USB drive to install the image to a second USB drive - but be careful of which drive you put it onto, (check their sizes carefully).

#360 Re: Devuan » Debian has fallen. What now? » 2021-09-08 08:56:48

All help will be gratefully received, I have no doubt, if I could be more useful, I would, but I'm just an end user, so I promote Devuan where I can, without making myself into a zealot. wink

#361 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] USB image - Access Denied error » 2021-09-08 08:45:57

I always use dd - try using that, mine worked fine on a chromebook.

#362 Re: Installation » To Ralph And Some Others » 2021-09-08 08:39:58

Yep, I remember those posts - seems this person has some kind of memory loss....

We will likely be better off without them. wink

#363 Re: Devuan » desktop-live chimaera beta isos » 2021-09-04 16:43:32

Many thanks for the new (beta2) .iso - will try it probably tomorrow. smile

EDIT: Change of plans - made time to try it - worked perfectly - (after I remembered how to with the UEFI installer wink ) - many thanks, chromebook now running 'beta2'. smile

#364 Re: Devuan » desktop-live chimaera beta isos » 2021-09-03 14:49:04

Actually, I had the same problem when I tried to boot from my dd'ed pendrive on my UEFI chromebook - the same pendrive has installed to 2 other MBR 64bit computers perfectly.

devuan_chimaera_4.0.beta_2021-08-27_amd64_desktop-live

Edit: Just to say that Beowulf (live desktop) installed to my chromebook before without any problems.

Would really like an upgrade of the original CLI images, if possible, the Beowulf ones have been working great. smile

#366 Re: Devuan » desktop-live chimaera beta isos » 2021-09-02 14:07:28

Just installed 64bit live to my old HP-G62, (2GB ram/2GB swap) - also installed 32bit live to an old Toshiba Satellite Pro, (1GB ram/2GB swap), both seem to be working fine. smile

#367 Re: Devuan Derivatives » JWM Kit Linux build 20210828 (WOW! What an improvement) » 2021-08-31 17:26:48

The doas program is an updated sudo basically, with less options making for more security, first appeared on OpenBSD. smile

#368 Re: Installation » Beowulf Live Image Booting Problem » 2021-08-06 08:37:19

Did you check that your download/s was/were good?

(Personally, never had a problem with the 'live' image.)

Possibly, your graphics aren't supported, but rare these days.

Check all physical connections, etc.

#369 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] New kernel adoption policy in Debian » 2021-07-27 08:21:02

They tend to stick with tried & tested kernels, if you want the latest, you might have to use 'sid'.

#370 Re: Devuan » [SOLVED] (Problem) Trying to update package list... » 2021-07-20 15:26:19

Many thanks!

I was needing the extra parameter with apt-get, (my 'usual' way of package management).

What exactly do I need to do, please.

#372 Re: Devuan » Windows 11 will _enforce_ Secure Boot » 2021-07-14 08:59:57

I think, if I remember right, you have only bought the right to use MS Windows, a kind of lease, you don't own it outright - which was another reason for using Linux for me.

I would prefer to use totally open software & hardware, but it won't happen, because companies spend billions to bring new products to market, to stay ahead of their competitors.

#373 Re: Devuan » Windows 11 will _enforce_ Secure Boot » 2021-07-12 09:21:36

But.......don't all processor chips have proprietary code in them......I really can't see much difference - but blobs can be updated by a user, or maybe even replaced by different code.

#374 Re: Devuan » Windows 11 will _enforce_ Secure Boot » 2021-07-11 09:19:33

Not sure what to make of your comments, I have Devuan on all my RPi, 3A+ / 3B+ / 4B / 400, works well as a basic desktop computer for me.

#375 Re: Devuan » Windows 11 will _enforce_ Secure Boot » 2021-07-10 17:29:42

For a regular desktop user, i.e. internet, photos, music, movies, wordprocessor, spreadsheet user, a Raspberry Pi 4B is the answer, & we have Devuan to put onto it - a win/win situation! smile

N.B. The RPi4B with 2GB ram is only about £35/$35 & is silent in operation - 4GB is about £55/$55 - 8GB about £75/$75.
