#327 Re: Devuan » Debian Farm? » 2024-01-08 19:07:28

@JWM-Kit

Does it? or is it just that windows lies and hibernates when you tell it to shutdown...

Have you tried checking it yourself?

Ok, let's be specific.

I gave the boot time for Linux on my old computer, GIGA-BYTE GA-945GCM-S2L motherboard, E8400 3.0 GHz processor, Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB 7200rpm 16MB WD3200AAKS 3.5 SATA II hard drive.
The computer turns off from the power supply; it does not know any sleep modes from birth. smile

On the same computer, Win7 is installed on a Samsung 80GB 7200rpm 8MB hard drive (HD080HJ).
Its boot time from pressing the grub menu to the loaded desktop (not to the user selection prompt, after which the desktop still loads as is the case with Linux) is 30 seconds.

This is from the Y580 instructions; the same thing is written for my Y500 and it works. Novo button is a small button next to the Power button.

BIOS setup utility
What is BIOS setup utility?
The BIOS setup utility is ROM-based software. It communicates basic computer information
and provides options for setting boot devices, security, hardware mode, and other
       preferences.
How can I start the BIOS setup utility?
To start the BIOS setup utility:
       1 Shut down the computer.
2    Press the Novo button and then select BIOS Setup.

#330 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » nvidia-persistenced failed to initialize » 2024-01-06 09:47:13

@Marjorie

I completely agree!

After adding the Ceres repository, Apt removed some of the DE packages and no dist-upgrade helped. The problem is known, newer versions of packages break dependencies.

The equipment may be old, but my i7 laptop has two identical GT650Ms installed, which do not work with the tesla-470 driver suggested by nvidia-detect. (Debian's list of supported card models has errors).
At the same time, the 2D speed of the Nvidia driver is 10...15 times higher than with nouveau.

It's a pity that Nvidia driver support for them has been discontinued.

In my opinion, this decision by Debian programmers simply repels users. I just installed opensuse on my laptop, where the Nvidia driver is in the repository without all the Debian dances with a tambourine.

#331 Re: Devuan » Debian Farm? » 2024-01-06 07:59:44

Where it all began - the need for systemd was presented as a means of speeding up loading, while simultaneously launching several services at once. They even came up with a special program that showed the loading time of each one.
The goal is wonderful, Winxp loaded faster then.

What have we come to?
One computer, openSuSe 15.5 with systemd and Daedalus 5.0 with sysv, the same DE and functionality.
The boot time from the start from the grub menu to the WM user selection menu is the same, on my old computer it was 35 seconds.

But Win7(8) still loads faster. smile

#332 Re: Devuan » [SOLVED] Stop LXDE from being automatically started » 2024-01-06 06:58:03

@Mike
This is what I mentioned above, sysv-rc-conf package.

@steve_v
No, Unix had multi-user launch levels, but without X, with and without a network. Runlevel 1 was not used specifically for everyday work in text mode.

Convenient perhaps, but not really necessary as it's just a TUI frontend for update-rc.d.

Yes, only the interface, but it helped me discover differences in operation between the original sysv and the modern version in Chimaera .

At the same time, it eliminates errors when typing commands. smile

@pcalvert

...I had a problem when installing Refracta. The installation appeared to complete without a hitch, but GRUB apparently wasn't fully installed because when I rebooted, the laptop went straight into Windows. I was quite puzzled by that. Eventually, I realized that the most likely culprit was Fast Startup on Windows. I thought that I had temporarily disabled Fast Startup, but it appears that the method I used is outdated and no longer works.

The thread where this question was asked is closed.
I'll share my experience here, maybe the problem is similar.

I installed Windows and Linux on a Lenovo Y500 laptop; it has a separate button on the side to enter the BIOS.
After installing Linux, another item “UEFI Firmware Settings” appeared in the grub menu.
When you select it, the BIOS menu opens, and in the “Boot” section two entries appear, something like “Windows on the disk...” and “Linux on the disk...”

Accordingly, you can choose which entry to load first. (I tried to install another Linux on this laptop, so there was an entry for it too).
If the first one is “Windows...”, it boots, if Linux, then its grub menu appears.

Obviously, these features depend on the BIOS of a particular computer.

#335 Re: Devuan » [SOLVED] Stop LXDE from being automatically started » 2024-01-05 14:03:17

@steve_v
Thanks for the tip.
I caught my eye once, but I needed text mode in ancient times only to install the nvidia driver, I forgot already. sad

And on the topic, I would install the sysv-rc-conf package, it clearly shows what is running, it’s easy to edit, and I would try to create a runlevel in text mode.

Switch with telinit command.
But I haven't tried it myself.

#336 Re: Devuan » [SOLVED] Stop LXDE from being automatically started » 2024-01-05 11:36:11

I probably don’t understand something and will write something stupid.
But text mode was runlevel 3, and graphics mode was runlevel 5.

The telinit command, which switches runlevels, still works.
But on my Daedalus only telinit 1 switches to text mode, telinit 3 switches to graphic.

The order in which services are started is important to sysv, so another method may not work or may cause a crash.

I apologize for the offtopic.
I just want to ask, “Who has tried to comply with the rules of minimum citation when using a smartphone?” smile

But seriously, on one of the sites in the response window, when you clicked the “Quote” button, only the selected text appeared, and not the entire message.
But that's it...

#338 Re: Installation » Howto install dual-boot Windows Linux best method » 2024-01-04 16:13:23

If you are a professional photographer, then today you cannot do without more or less new top-end hardware and Win.
Programs that process raw images and use artificial intelligence for noise reduction work under Windows or Mac and cost money.
Actually it has always been like this.

P.S. At one time, Win was needed for Micro-Cap.
It is developed based on open source SPICE. But using Micro-Cap with its “human” interface... smile

#339 Re: Installation » Howto install dual-boot Windows Linux best method » 2024-01-04 14:41:28

Yeah, and Partition Magic was even better. smile

I can’t say anything about Win; I haven’t dealt with him for a long time. Win7 is installed on my work computer with default settings. I only use it to run programs under Win (sony pbm, etc.).

#340 Re: Installation » Howto install dual-boot Windows Linux best method » 2024-01-04 12:46:30

My recent experience with installing Win8.

I got my hands on a laptop, the Win8 license was stitched into the BIOS. Two disks, 256GB SSD and 500GB HDD. I prepared the SSD, separate sections of UEFI, Windows and Linux.
I downloaded the Microsoft Win8 image and started the installation. And until I gave him the entire SSD drive to be torn to pieces, he didn’t want to install anything!

Although, after installing editing ssd partitions using gparted and installing Linux next to it, it continues to work normally.

The only thing I can notice is that the UEFI bootloader partition, after installing Win (approx. 100MB), needs to be increased to 1...2 GB to install Linux. Otherwise, the Linux partition of the bootloader, formatted in fat32, opens in Windows and can easily be damaged.
Win8 itself does not respond to changes in the bootloader partition; its UUID does not change.

#342 Re: Installation » netinstall and KDE » 2024-01-02 09:15:37

Not quite on topic, I need Trinity DE.
A few days ago I installed it on a real computer with wi-fi.

The installation of exegnu64_daedalus-20231220.iso did not work, I could not get wi-fi to work.
Therefore, I used devuan_daedalus_5.0.0_amd64_desktop-live.iso, installed it, everything worked without problems, including wi-fi.
Several commands following the instructions in https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Devuan_ … structions installed Trinity DE.
During the installation process, a manager selection window appears, I chose twm.
Reboot, delete xfce

apt-get purge *"xfce"*

.

No problems during the installation process, but, of course, in real cases it depends on the specific hardware.

P.S. With KDE Plasma Desktop it’s easier, the packages are already in the repository.

#345 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] transmission-gkt ( release version) » 2023-12-27 18:39:44

Hobby is an irrational thing and one of the main incentives here is “want” smile
I don't need transmission, but I want to see what started the fighting.
Summary - everything is put together, here is the result of the make program.

  [ 94%] Built target libtransmission-test
[ 95%] Building CXX object daemon/CMakeFiles/transmission-daemon.dir/daemon.cc.o

My actions :
I downloaded transmission-4.0.5.tar.xz and unpacked it.
Further actions are indicated in README.md.
Installed the missing cmake, dh-cmake, cmake-data, cmake-extras, cmake-format.
Cmake required curl, installed.
Next are the commands cmake..., make as in instructions.

#348 Re: Installation » Installing Devuan on a PC with RX 7600 » 2023-12-25 09:27:05

I apologize for the offtopic.
This is not the first case of developers not caring about users. As a result, the distribution loses them (users). A commercial organization would have gone bankrupt long ago. Obviously there is no manager limiting the free flight of developers' imaginations and there is no incentive to make the distribution convenient for users.

#349 Off-topic » Nvidia vs nouveau for old card. » 2023-12-24 14:06:50

Lenovo Y500 laptop with two GT 650M video cards. The latest version of the Nvidia driver for them is 418, the latest version of Nvidia supported by distributions is 390.

There are two simple programs for speed testing, 2D xengine, 3D glxgears.

The laptop has two operating systems, openSuse 15.5 with the nvidia driver installed and dedaulus with the nouveau driver.
glxgears results are the same, ok. 60 fps (monitor frame rate).
Result 2D

Nvidia driver
1.png
nouveau driver
2.png
On the bad side for Nvidia, I couldn't get the keyboard buttons to work to adjust the brightness, although xblacklight works.
Draw your own conclusions; in general, there are no problems with the lack of speed in 2D in Linux with free drivers.

And anyone who installs the nvidia v.390 driver on debian should certainly be given a medal for patience.
