Yes, let us bow ourselves down to our overlords, Gooble and Mozilla. They have our best interests at heart. Over and out.
Did you bother to get the other side of the story?

A lot of this stuff I really don't get, I admit. But from what I can glean from it, they made some changes that weren't allowed for it to still be called Pale Moon. What's the problem with that? That would be like me getting a Ford car, putting in a GM engine, but still labeling it and selling it as a Ford, which would clearly be wrong. Am I right or am I wrong? Also, they still had the opportunity to revert what they had done so they could use official branding, or they could have kept what they did and use unofficial branding, or they could have called it a fork and used their own branding. Yet the PM devs are called the assholes? What reality are you guys living in?

Anybody pushing for Chromium, Gooble, or their lapdog Mozilla, has no credibility in making this statement.
@Ron, is "old and obsolete, though still actively developed, code" better?
First off, old, yes; obsolete, no, yet more misinformation. Please stop with your misinformation. To answer your question, yes older code is better. Here is why (link below). I'd like to see how you will contradict it. The author of this article co-founded Fog Creek Software. He also worked with Jeff Atwood to create Stack Overflow and served as CEO of Stack Overflow from 2010-2019. He also served as the chairman of the board for Stack Overflow, Glitch, and HASH.
Twice you mentioned that Pale Moon is based on "dead code." That is a straw-man argument. Pale Moon uses code that is actively developed by Pale Moon. Therefore, it is not dead code. Pale Moon is updated whenever there are security issues that affect it, whether said issues affect Firefox or not. That is, any security issue that may not affect Firefox, but does Pale Moon, will be fixed in Pale Moon. So don't go around saying Pale Moon is based on "dead code." That IS misinformation.
There is some misinformation about Pale Moon in this thread, so at risk of being called a lackey, I'd like to correct the record. I'll just mention one inaccuracy.
I don't disagree with many of your points, but a largely unknown browser from a one man project . . .
According to the developer,
Pale Moon is not "just me" and hasn't been for the majority of its life. There are some talented and dedicated people at work in our community to make Pale Moon what it is, and actually has seen support in many ways by many people over the years.
The above quote is from here. If you want the facts on Pale Moon, I suggest giving it a read.
There was a thread about Mozilla recently on LQ:
The trouble is, that the alternatives to Firefox are worse. The 3rd party forks are what amounts to snake oil salesmen peddling their wares. I despise the UIs of both chromium anf Firefox, but just learned to live with them and disable the telemetry / data collection where possible.
Sounds like Stockholm syndrome to me. I can't speak to other FF forks, but your comments about them don't apply to Pale Moon.
Okay, I see python3-pyqt4 in Synaptic. But I don't see pyqt4-dbus (or python3-pyqt4-dbus). So I did a search of "dbus" and I see that I have the following installed:
python-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5
python-pyqt5
python-qt4
python-qt4-dbus
python3-dbus
python3-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5
So I tried to install pyqt4-dbus and pyqt4, and got this message:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package pyqt4In the interest of completeness, I did not first uninstall hplip 16. Now I'm glad I didn't.
It was downloaded from the hplip site. The file is hplip-3.19.5.run. Here are the pertinent parts. At some point, I get this:
MISSING DEPENDENCIES

I type "y" and press enter. Then a bit later I get this...

error: A required dependency 'pyqt4 (PyQt 4- Qt interface for Python (for Qt version 4.x))' is still missing. Then a few seconds later, the terminal crashes and I'm still on hplip 3.16.11.
At this point, I'm just afraid to go on thinking that I might lose the printing function with all this fiddling around.
Would I run apt install -f before or after trying to install HPLIP 3.19.5?
Okay, I'm taking a shot in the dark, it possible to use Debian's backports?
I found this: https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/hplip
Have you looked in ascii backports? Might not need to upgrade to beowulf.
It is your spellchecker that is objecting to Devuan. Just add that word and the red squiggle will go away.
Looked in the backports (here; is this the right place?), and it only goes up to hplip version 3.18.12. According to the hplip site I need version 3.19.5. So am I SOL with using my scanner? Is there any other possible way to get it working??
Offtopic: Added "Devuan" to spellchecker. Thanks golinux.
I guess the bottom line is that the version of hplip that comes with ascii, 3.16.11, is not compatible with HP 8025. I need to upgrade to version 3.19.5 according to the hplip website; but when I try, I get dependency errors. I thought that since I got the printing problem fixed by using CUPS only, the scanner would work that way also, but I guess I was wrong? The only thing I can think of is to move to Devuan Beowulf. How can I find out what version of hplip comes with Beowulf?
Offtopic: I just noticed that when typing "Devuan" when making a post, it gets a red squiggly underline as if it's misspelled. That's ironic considering that this is Devuan's forums.
EDIT
Okay, so based on this, it looks like hplip 3.18.12 is the version on Debian 10. But according to this, the version on Debian 10.3 is hplip 3.20.5. So how do I know what version is available on Devuan Beowulf?
Yes, I have hplip toolbox installed, but I can't get past the frist window because it isn't detecting my printer/scanner. I don't see, on any of the toolbox windows, anything that says "fax-printer."
When I open the toolbox, I first get this.

Then I click Setup Device... and I then get this.

I then click Next and get this.
https://i.imgur.com/dCFZBrc.jpg
There is no option on any of these windows for "fax-printer."
In hplip I keep getting the message "No Installed HP Devices Found," just like I did when I couldn't get it to print. However, at the bottom of this window it says:
Note: Only devices installed with the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend will appear in the HP Device Manager.
Does that have anything to do with the URI of the printer I mentioned above not starting with "hp:" but with "usb"?
EDIT
Since posting the above, I tried installing and using Simple Scan. I got the same message, no scanner detected. Then, on another forum where I posted this problem, somebody mentioned I might try purging ippusbxd and replacing it with ipp-usb. So I looked them up, and ipp-usb isn't available in the repo, but ippusbxd is, and I noticed it was not installed. So I installed it and rebooted the computer and tried both Simple Scan again and Xsane and still no joy.
In looking over the troubleshooting page that was linked to by Altoid, I don't understand this part:
Solution:
For network scanning, the "hp:/net/..." URI must be configured in the CUPS queue for auto-discovery by OpenOffice and xsane. You can manually specify the URI with xsane using the following format:
xsane <"hpaio" device uri>
For example:
xsane hpaio:/net/PSC_750?ip=12.25.63.142
(Where the CUPS installed device URI is: hp:/net/PSC_750?ip=12.25.63.142, and the hp: was replaced with hpaio:)
I looked up the URI of the printer and it doesn't begin with hp:/net/, it begins with usb://HP. The whole thing is:
usb://HP/OfficeJet%20Pro%208020%20series?serial=**********&interface=1
I replace some numbers with asterisks because it seemed like that was the serial number
I successfully added myself to the scanner group, but Xsane still does not recognize the scanner. I wonder if trying Simple Scan would work; but being that both Simple Scan and Xsane are just GUIs for Sane, I'm thinking it won't make a difference.
A few months ago I had to replace my HP 6660 printer with a new one. I got an HP Office Jet Pro 8025. For some reason, it wouldn't work with hplip, so I installed cups (system-config-printer) and it prints okay using that (here). Now just the other day, I noticed that Xsane Image scanner won't recognize it. Is this related to the fact that hplip didn't work with 8025? Does anyone know of a way I can get the scanner working in conjuction with my computer? Thanks.
I am confused as to what browser is being used (and rejected). Is it Basilisk? Is it Firefox ESR 68.0? Please clue us in. If you're using Basilisk and getting this error, use a UA override. If you're using an old Firefox ESR, update to the current one, 78.3.1.
Mind telling us what bank this is?
One reason against unlimited time for editing is that such editing, after following posts have been made, could possibly throw off the "flow" of the thread. What I mean is that such editing can make following posts appear nonsensical, etc. There's another forum I frequent where, once a following post is posted, one cannot go back and edit his/her post (the previous one). I think that's a good standard to follow.
I am used to using 'update-grub' and 'grub-install' commands on other distros, but that is not working in Miyo!
Shouldn't it be sudo update-grub?
What you can do is s6 site:dev1galaxy.org/ in your search engine of choice. Here's the results from DDG:
Glad that it worked. It may be possible to use the proper 8020 *.ppd driver which may be part of hplip. I'm not sure how to do that.
I'll just stick to what's working.
But I'm wondering now, can hplip be removed from my computer without affecting the printer?
Another option is using CUPS. There is a gui tool system-config-printer. Try installing system-config-printer, system-config-printer-udev packages.
Much thanks, installing system-config-printer seems to have done the trick. I owe you one cold beer. ![]()
I will wait a day or two before marking this as solved.
HPLIP db shows HP 8020 Officejet series printers are supported. May be you should run hp-setup with the printer connected to the Linux PC. It will work.
Unfortunately it doesn't. Any other suggestions?
[Is 8025 considered part of the 8020 series? I can't understand why it's not being detected.]
