touch: cannot touch '/mnt/test': Read-only file systemApparently when it is first plugged in, it appears to be read and write, but when I try to do something, it switches to read only. Two examples:
1) After plugging it in, if I right click in it (after browsing to it), the Create Folder and Create File options are not greyed out. But when I click either one of them, I get an error message that says it is read only and after that those two options are greyed out.
2) After plugging it in, if I open a simple text file on it (with Pluma), the file appears to be editable, but once I make the first change, it becomes read only (I notice this in the title bar of Pluma).
After doing one of the above two, I get the following from the sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdc command (which is weird because I can still see it and open files on it):
$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdc
[sudo] password for ron:
/dev/sdc: No such file or directoryDoes this suggest the drive is going bad?

Okay, this is a noobish question. I just installed Miyo Linux and I'm having problems with a Seagate portable drive. I can plug it in but it's read only. It has worked before I installed Miyo, so I'm thinking it is a permission problem, although the drive is old and it's possible it's failing. FTR, I can write to my flash drive. How to check the permission? When I right click the drive's icon and select properties, then select the permissions tab, it says there "The permissions of "Seagate Backup" could not be determined."

Running Miyo ceres. I installed Mate and deleted Openbox. Can I delete the Xfce power manager without any consequences? I ask because in my notes for the old version of Miyo it says don't deleted it (I'm assuming that instruction came from MiyoLinux but it's been so long ago I can't remember). However, I know it's not running and the Mate manager is.

Okay, so I installed it and so far things are well. Actually, they're better. A week ago I installed the current Devuan, and I was getting horrible screen tearing in my browser. On this Miyo (ceres) I'm not. 👍 Any idea what is the difference?

I'm trying to add the ppa for inxi sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unit193/inxi but I keep getting this:

So I deleted compton and kept picom. I created picom.conf and put it in the .config folder. This is what I put (and only this):

but I sill am experiencing terrible screen tearing. Should I enable or unenable hardware acceleration in the browser? Is there anything else to try?
EDIT
Hardware acceleration was off, so I switched it on. Screen tearing is still bad.

I just installed Devuan 4.0 over top of 2.1 and am having a few issues. The first issue is that when I click on .deb files to install apps, instead of installing they open with the archiver. I know these are .deb files that are supposed to install the app.
The second issue is I installed Compton because of screen tearing in the browser. The instructions I was given said after installing it to go to /home/**/.config and open compton.conf and edit some lines. The problem is this file doesn't exit. I double checked and made sure Compton is installed and was added to the list of start up apps, but no config file for it exists.

Your update bypassed the apt database. Synaptic looks at the database and not at the application.
Well, I have the latest SMPlayer installed via a .deb file, which I don't think is the most current offered by the database, and yet Synaptic shows it as installed. (Version 21.1.0+2.1) This is on Devuan 2.1.

I updated inxi due to a thread in another forum. Here's how I did it: First, opened "/etc/inxi.conf" as administrator and change the line B_ALLOW_UPDATE=false -to- B_ALLOW_UPDATE=true. Save and close the file. Then ran sudo inxi -U in terminal to update inxi to latest version. Here's the problem, when I look in Synaptic, it says my current version is still 2.3.5-1, but when I run inxi --version in the terminal it comes up to the latest. See screenshot. Why is Synaptic still showing the old version?

Every time I have asked about Trinity desktop in any Linux forum I see these claims that it is hugely insecure due to being such an old code base and no one with any sense would dare use it.
This is the same ignorant claim made against Pale Moon browser. As long as it's maintained with bug and security fixes, it's no more insecure than any other comparable app. (Unless there's something about TDE I don't know yet.)
Second, is this claim of 'ancient code' remotely true? Just because they forked it from KDE 3.x doesn't mean they haven't fixed any bugs since then. That's the point of the fork, to get control of the code.

I'm still surprised some people are crying like babies over this. How many times did Firefox "break" these legacy extensions in the past? Why do you think some of those extensions had so many updates? You can't expect frozen extensions to continue to work forever in an actively developed browser. What's so hard to understand about that? I mean, people seem more upset over this than Firefox totally abandoning this type of extension in favor of webextensions. It makes absolutely no sense to me. I also get the impression that a high majority of people bitchin' over this don't even use Pale Moon (they just have a weird hatred of it).
