That MB required that i switch nvme's in order to have one read in the first slot. Nothing in the second slot.

But the script has proved out. Installing anything i preemptively:   insert that into the INSTALL USB  grub or bootloader efi NOT ONLY DOES it make the usb see the second drive pre- installation g, it transmits this to the bootloader in the permanent install on the nvme.  The Kernel Knows it must be passed on to the permanent installation boot. it works always.

#4 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Still Waiting at the Altar -- Daedalus 5.01 Full Install » 2024-06-10 17:16:57

WELL . ...  I found the log comments that indicated a Segmentation Fault  preventing access to the XServer.  They gave lots of fixes mostly concerning reworking the config files which i would have had to do with chmod or chown from the install usb. I declined that avenue, so i have no real script info to provide.

after a lot of DUCK-DUCK-GO -ing . .  turns out the issue is common when NVIDIA Is involved on the system.  As is my old 1080 ti graphics.  Attempted to install the relevant driver ( 470 ) but was denied. Would only offer to go back to the install media to do so.

boot grub Used "  nomodeset=0 and still no luck.

Used  nomodeset=1 and got a distorted image ( exploded at probably 720 x 480 ) but no login

[ this is like 15 years ago when used to routinely remove the graphics card to get a boot in anything but Ubuntu ].

So

I switched the monitor over to the Intel 620 onboard. .  but that helped not at all except for incredibly fast boot.

When i used in grub  nomodeset = 0  with intel inside i got a "clean" boot journal to login.  but still no startx  working. EVEN THOUGH i had an Xserver completing itself at login.

I removed the Nividia card altogether.

Boot to login.  Logged in.  Startx worked perfectly.

I am writing from this install now.

Yeah i use midnight commander that LOOKS like its on CLI.  When i have some time i will learn how to use the real CLI MC.

What i am wondering is  why all of a sudden it was a problem when it has been no problem all these years.

I will worry about how to re-integrate the Nvidia, but truthfully i think i will just wait till i get a good deal on AMD, paired properly to my setup [ without more than i need for this PCIE 3 Machine. ]

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYONE I BADGERED The last few weeks.   I have learned so much from this experience [ also about mnyself, unfortunately ].

----------------------------

just as an aside Seatd when invoked after login and before startx gives a weird presence of being there but allowing nothing to pass. WHAT DOES the seatd do ??

LAST HURRAH BEFORE I GIVE UP TILL NEXT EDITION

i HAVE TRIED EVERY SUGGESTION YOU all have given me so kindly, and still i cannot raise a deskop GUI.

HAVE MADE NINE DIFFERENT INSTALLS to whittle down the guilty parties here, stil; to no avail.

Someone suggested i install mc straigt away to be able to maneuver, but when i gtet to the xorg.log.0 it wiull not open.

The Following have been suggested to me over the last couple of months ( to no avail ):

( you know what, i am not going to recite again all the suggetions. .  they are many and if you are reading this you mnay well have contributed )

Suffice it to say that  am at a clean install with

proprietary Non-Free -Devuan software ( mostly for nvidia issues ) -- when i inserted nomodeset=0 to the bootloader it actually gave me a glimpse of a lightdm ( mnaybe ? ) login but all huge images which told me i needed to use the nvidia option -- but i was never able to repeat the cycle.

only one user with sudo priveleges ( no logging in  for root ) so as not to confuse  permissions and privileges

only the default desktop chosen at install ( Xfce )

        only the standard utilities

        no server

xorg IS THERE but server not available. Cannot be reached.

with the following all listed as present  and functioning
( after requesting installs at the login to see if they are there already - and in every case they were there already )

            seatd

slim  ( default for Xfce )

            xorg

            xserver

startx introduced in every comination possible

And no matter what i try, the Xserver is in error -- not available.

            segmentation fault

I spent hours again today just searching apt to find out what was there and what was not, ' by installing them
[ mostly they just give me back  a short summary that the curent one is the most recent one available, and no further installing to do ].

and then trying to coax a DE from this

            sudo task-xfce-desktop

            sudo taxsel xfce-desktop

            sudo slim task-xfce-desktop

            sudo slim taskel xfce-desktop

PLEASE do not tell me to  just wait till Excalibur in hopes that this startx and Xorg Server -fantasy stuff is resolved.
[ a fair portion of the issues in this forum relate to x xorg startx, and yet none of their advice helped me  specifically ].

AND SO. ..

What I am needing from ANY of you is what i am supposed to do precisely after tty login to do so.

I feel like i have suffered enough in about 10 total days' effort over the last couple of months , researching  and questioning.  I need someone to be kind enough to just give me the real answer for CLI to successfully start a desktop in Devuan.

Surely I am missing something essential. , but so obvious to you all that You don't even consider it comlicated enough to consider.  I should already know.   But I do not.  I am that stupid.

I do not want to give up on Devuan. I want it to be my server and main squeeze.  But this is not sustainable.  I am out of suggestions.

I am writing now from NixOS but also have used in just the past 3 years  have installed

Redcore ( gentoo )
Q4os
wifislax ( slackware )
Kali
Parrot
Kodachi
Artix (no Sysd Arch )
MX
Xenwalk  ( slackware)
Manjaro
Mageia

and 15 other generic Linux OS

and have never ONCE had an issue like this one with Devuan.

Puppy Linux derivatives for some reason i cannot get the "LAY-IT-IN" copy nistall to work.  Ironic huh. ..

[ BTW  4-0 Chimaera was no problem either.  It only occurred installing Daedalus 5.01 with A free-floating  startx unbound and The Libraries dovetailing into Debian ]  .. Coincidence ??

NOT FOR NOTHIN, BUT , , , installs should INCLUDE options for Auto-Login at the beginning.

You must understand i would have dropped this months ago if you had just been another testing install.  But it is not.  I truly want to make Devuan the server i can focus upon. I believe your system approach is almost perfect in its conception.  How ironic.

any help is appreciated.

Ralph i took your excellent fundamental advice and it gets me to a clean login command only. You are right  though just generally  ..  I forgot my own experience which is as yours. Anyway you will read in the next post the result.    Thanks.

#7 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Still Waiting at the Altar -- Daedalus 5.01 Full Install » 2024-06-09 14:07:02

Aluma  .  thank you.. ..

I tried to do it through m c but could never get it to open.

But the problem is that there is a problem to begin with. This should be garden-variety to resolve.

#9 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Still Waiting at the Altar -- Daedalus 5.01 Full Install » 2024-06-06 05:37:17

sorry i hit enter accidentally. \

So Daedalus does not automatically log in at all any more ? I saw no option to make it auto-loign during install. If it was there i missed it.

sp what dp o meed to do specifically,. when logged in at tty ?

Please spell it out for me letter by letter and word for word the set of commands i must excecute get ANY D E running .

#10 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Still Waiting at the Altar -- Daedalus 5.01 Full Install » 2024-06-06 05:32:21

when i did the full install from the install .iso   i elected 3 D E - Xfce kde plasma and lxqt
Those should already be installed, awaiting me to indicate which of them at cli  login.

but now startx is no longer automatic at boot.  So you are telling me that the Daedalus does not automatically install xorg or startx,

Is this because Dev's want to give us the choice ?

In Chimaera it was automatiically booted to Lxqt with sddm or slim -

What you are telling me is that this install is not complete until i install  xorg  sddm lx

Still Waiting at the Altar -- Daedalus 5.01 Full Install

THIS IS A REBIRTH OF THE PRIOR SUBJECT WHICH I MARKED AS SOLVED OUT OF FRUSTRATION.

Burned a new usb on Daedalus 5.01 from INSTALL source instead of LIVE DESKTOP .

have full complete install of Daedalus that brings me to login . I log in, and then what doi do to elicit a dsiplay mgr ( sddm 0 and desktop (xfce-session ).

I try to use tasksel but it disappears without initiating anything.  I am at a loss. I have installed as everyone suggested,, simply, with a user who has sudo privileges instead of as root.

SO there are no issues with permissions prior to logging in.

What am i supposed to do with CLI  logged in
syv-init

sddm

installed

Kde Plasma
Lxqt
Xfce

and Server setup

WHAT STEPS AM I MISSING to bring up the Desktop ?

Earlier failures were openrc slim and runit sddm
.

PLEASE SPELL OUT FOR ME THE EXACT CLI INSTRUCTIONS I NEED TO GET THIS RIGHT -  I NEED IT FROM YOU WORD FOR WORD AND LETTER FOR LETTER

THANKS. / Andrew

kernel -- immutable -  DEFECT in  6.0 onwards or hardened

----------------------------------------------------------

[ my assumption -- please if you have a similar motherboard intending to  dual boot OS each simultaneously ].

Mine is

ROG 370 Z series

[   love the Bios - nothing else like it ]

two nvme slots - each holding independent O S  [ 1 tb each ]  -- but i partition for 2 OS on each drive for testing Linux OS  - blame Distrowatch.

3 x 2 tb seagate storage
1 x 500 gb Windows ( separate so i never have to dual boot on it )
64 gb
PCIE 3
Intel 620  onboard
Nvidia ti-1080 discreet
Intel i7 3700 12 core

[ I know .. .  i know  . ..  I am waiting to be Re-incarnated in AMD -- ]

Until Kernel 6.0 ( and some 5.8 - 5.9  betas etc )

I had NO - ZERO - problem with dual nvme being detected - even on Windows 11  -
AND EVEN ON DEVUAN 4.0 no problem .

Now booting install .iso for Devuan 5.01 - it does NOT see the second nvme util i add to the bootloader :

"  nvme_core.multipath=0   "

[ which in essence relieves the Kernel from looking for something that isn't there to begin with ]

[  note: this is NOT related to the periodic failure of Arch see to ANY nvme System Drive in a single slot ]

AFTER 25 DIFFERENT FLAVORS  ARCH derivatives -- ALL  - are the biggest offenders - even with no sysd :

Gentoo  [ redcore gui ]
Slackware [ Xen, WifiSlax  etc ]
Artix
NixOS
Slackware ( Xen, WifiSlax etc )

and all Debian and Ubuntu derivatives - but it is NOT related to sysd.

I have trouble-shot this for the last 9 months  and have about 85 dead ends to describe if you are interested in the bloody gory details.

If a Distribution is based upon Linux Kernel 6.0 + it will not see the second drive.  Period.

The reason no one knows is if you don't have dual nvme on the MOtherBoard you will never know.

So since this is a fringe-item that obviously NEVER got attention at the  [ Ahem ] Kernel Level and persists in 6.1 then i can only assume that it will not be addressed until El Jefe has his own setup and witnesses / demands it.

I WILL say I understand his strident attitude towards sloppy input.

will double-post to  Packaging and DIY ... PLEASE someone kick this upstairs.

Here I am again.  .   still hung up on permissions with Devuan 40 chimaera
Installed 3 desktops total - Xfce   LxQt  Kde Plasma.

I have failed to set up users and groups so that they all work and i can access internal data drives because LxQt seems confused as to whether its KDE or Gnome.  IN either install i have NO ability control users and groups. And it is not recognizing my data drives which have ALWAYS been instantly recognized  and accessible no matter who is logged in, what desktop.

Installed twice before - once with User as admin and root - without automatic login and arrested at tty
and installed again User with Sudo as Root

Neither time have I been able to control change add etc involving 2nd and 3rd users ( which i HAD intended to use separately for each desktop ).

I am going to reinstall again, this time installing Gnome-System-Tools BEFORE i try to add Users and groups.  But why should i have to find out by failure that Gnome-System-tools  is required BEFORE you create any additional users or groups?

at least thats' what i was told in a 3rd-paraty forum.

Sure home Daedalus gets its act together on this count.  Same problem, same desktops and a confused sddm slim x

openrc works well, i must say..

I don't expect a lot of attention here.   Just tell me the 5 or 6 or 7 things  that one should do after install but before doing anything else.  Thanks guys.

Meanwhile i will continue to look for answers in the forum but have had no luck to date.

#15 Re: Off-topic » Search babble » 2024-05-08 02:22:48

When DuckDuckGo first launched ( i nave no  idea how long ago ) I tried it just like all the other ethical search service, donating a hundredth-of-a-cent for each search -- ANYTHING to get away from Google.  But i gotta say that when I am up against the wall, i will use google.  Once a month. 99% of the time I get BETTER, CLEANER, DEEPER, MORE LOGICAL returns from DucK.  . why ?? because, for me anyway, i suffered through their growing pains, gave all my results to them to improve . . and by god, after a  few years they turned a corner.   What matters here - to me - is that we are graced with a plethora of options in our technological lives, and if one wants to feed the gorilla then don't complain  when he takes your lunch.

#17 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Firefox and Firefox Nightly repos in Synaptic . . » 2024-04-06 04:25:04

Alex Kemp - thank you. That is all i ever need  is an example and i am off to the races  . .  for everything now, not just firefox.  This obviously is a methodology that will work with all the hidden corners of Devuan.  Synaptic just doesn't cover the optional stuff.
Many thanks.

Stop Ai  -  I love your moniker. . . I know   what you mean. I have always noticed a snappy ESR and a sometimes lag in the others. but to be fair i have used both the regular Firefox and the nightly for about 20 years now and they have a lot of baggage to account for. But I am happy to not be so quick on the draw as a tradeoff for having all my extensions ( 35 of them ) and bookmarks just there at all times.   I am a folder freak.

Interesting what you say about Wayland and sway on ESR.  But ESR has never had as much flexibility under the hood. So are you saying that in Daedalus it is still a problem ?  I have had no problem in  Chimaera.  which is where i am stuck until Daedalus resolves stupid stuff around D E not launching at tty7on fresh install.

As far as Wayland, yeah  . . . it took 10 years for me to finally give up on Kali and Manjaro for that same reason. Sysd and Wayland never cut the mustard and Compositor was always an issue that nev. was always re-installing after some random break that built up over time.  but part of that was KDE driven issues. I find  LXQt  much better and that is my Devuan default these days with KDE 2nd.   Xfce and Mate really just don't cut it because they are going the Gnome-bias way and i really think it is time for Cannonical to just take Gnome over.  or Fedora- RedHat.   Nuff said.  I am happy to have less snappiness in exchange for pleasing graphics, etc of the QT KDE variety. Love KDE cosmetics, and their suite of mainstay software gets better all the Time.

I must admit i am also a huge Thunderbird user.   Actually backs up 12 different emails with relative grace.

But i was also on earthlink  dial-up with Navigator  on Windows in the 90's -- always felt there had to be a bertter way than Windows.

And everyone here who contributes to the body of  Linux knowledge proves it every day.

Thanks again.

#18 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] FAILURE to Initiate Xorg or startx and therefore no GUI for my new ins » 2024-04-05 02:28:46

The ironic part is that i only invoke startx AFTER sddm or slim fails to kickstart the D E. .. it should not even BE a problem.  But what is really confusing is that this is only a problem for SOME people.  Others never encounter the problem. Which tells me it should not be happening at all.  .  unless there is a more-strictly drawn condition that only doesn't work on some hardware.   So there is a bug that will eventually get fixed up the line but probably not for THIS  reason.

Just as an aside, it seems that my dual nvme slots  in the ROG370 were only recognized by EVERY OS based upon Kernel 5.4 and earlier. The moment the upgrade to 6.0 NONE saw my second nvme, until i found only by accident a reference to  "  nvme_core.multipath=0  "  which negates the Kernel looking for sometthing that is NOT there -- so anything is possible these days.  i dont think anyone at LInus world even knows about it yet.

This is why i try so many  distributions - just to see how the evolutions sometimes DON'T  . .  .

just a last note here... i may try again later on to reinstall Daedalus with a different mind-set and maybe i will discover the pea under the mattress. I wonder if a straight upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0 instead of a wipe-and-install might work.

Will let you know.

And thanks Nahkiirmees , for your thoughtful reply.

I do NOT use ESR for all kinds of reasons.

One of the things i am attempting to change is regarding what and how i install key packages like firefox.  In the past i would download the package, unzip it in the Home folder and create a link to it-

Same for FirefoxNightly

but i want it to be updated through Synaptic instead  ( and now that Mozilla  has finally made one home for them, I want to install the repos like you would anything else. So it can be on my favorites etc.  .. but, once again, this old man is confused by conflicting findings

https://mozilla-version-control-tools.r … drepo.html

and THIS FOR DEVS . .  Which seems to indicate that Devs can get everything in one place now.  So what about us ?

https://hg.mozilla.org/

https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-release/file

Have found a link for ESR  AND REGULAR Firefox

https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/poli … *&x=submit

but no option for en -  us -  i am sure i am just missing something fundamental here -- but no default choices listed. Or should i just use UK ?

and here for original links

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

but no nightly

also found these instructions regarding firefox nightly - DEBIAN

https://blog.nightly.mozilla.org/2023/1 … ributions/

But nothing unified for all the flavors (regular, esr, nightly )

WHAT is considered  ok to use from Debian?   Is there a repo within Devuan for the different flavors ?

IS THERE ONE SIGNLE source in Devuan ( or favored by Devuan ) that supplies them all ?

Do we still have the ability to cli install these in Devuan , FROM THE DEBIAN LISTING? I am guesing no. .

So can someone point me to a UNIFIED source for DEVUAN REPOS for Firefox ?

Or is there yet a more singular  ( complicated is ok )   way altogether to do all this ?

#20 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] FAILURE to Initiate Xorg or startx and therefore no GUI for my new ins » 2024-04-04 19:17:58

There is no simple solution here. Thank you for everyone who tried, but i have defaulted to re-installing Chimaera (normally, i would just move on to some other distro, but i REALLY BUT REALLY want this to work for a lot of long-0term strategic reasons to simultaneously boot 3 other testing  distros plus Windows in order to deal with clients i have that i convert from windows and mac to Linux.

The permissions without  GUI TO WORK WITH
The inability to LAUNCH  a GUI at tty7 or any other tty
using sddm or slim and openRC and the other sysv alternatives did not resolve it.  Too bad.

whatever is necessary in permissions and users and groups to launch just the default desktop is beyond me with no visual way to work.  And no one has given me the path for that so  I give up for now. And startx is no option -- it just errors out.

leave me no way to know what to do at that point that will change the approaches as spelled out above by me and  all of you.

I will revert to Daedalus or the next experimental one later on this year but i have lots of work to do in the meantime that cannot be further delayed by this.

I know the problem should be narked solved when abandoned, but it is by no means solved.

Now on to Firefox repos ( not esr ) to get installed into Synaptic. But that requires a new question.

Thanks for  everything.

#21 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] FAILURE to Initiate Xorg or startx and therefore no GUI for my new ins » 2024-03-29 05:29:46

I would imagine that this release info is relevant in some way - but why has no one else had an issue over this like i have ?
And since Devuan now incorporateswhatever relevant repos from Debian 12 then now there are involved, there might be a chance for some screw-up in the translation, BUT
No one else is having this problem ( at least that has not been resolved ):
------------------------------------

- Introduction
- New in this Release
     + Rootless startx uses libseat1
+ Sway (wayland) GUI without elogind

xserver-xorg-core now uses libseat1 to control rootless startx and access to
input and video devices. This has several advantages, the most significant being
that it removes the dbus dependency from xserver-xorg-core.

libseat1 can use either seatd or elogind as a
backend. If you need to override the default choice (autodiscovery), use the
LIBSEAT_BACKEND environment variable.

If you are using seatd as the backend, ensure the user is a member of the video group.

This is only relevant to running startx as a user, xorg run as root by a display
manager is unaffected.

### Wayland GUI without elogind

Users can now enjoy a wayland desktop without elogind by installing
libpam-ck-connector, sway and seatd.

Ensure the relevant user is a member of the `video` group and run sway from
the terminal.
. . . . . .. . . .

I have worked with every Display Mgr available in combination with every trick to get to a tty7 for launching every desktop  and still have no possibility to call up a Desktop Environment. I keep being told that it is locked out and not available.
WHAT am i forgetting to do ?  there is no way this should not be working.

seatd is present. sddm and or slim are present.  xorg is present but not allowed to execute because it is locked out or some other error on the x-server.

What i did do was download fresh copy of the Install - live  . .  and see if there were any errors in the original downloaded .
.iso.  Nope - identical result.

What am  i forgetting to do  ? there must be something simple i am forgetting to do.

#25 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] FAILURE to Initiate Xorg or startx and therefore no GUI for my new ins » 2024-03-27 15:40:10

Nahkhiirmees  so what you are saying is that i should just AVOID Startx yes ?

GlenW  comments:
I AM able to see entire entries on my big monitor.

When you do get to a tty, have you seen any errors about seatd? Because I found with a clean install seatd was not installed and the sddm would fail to show up and startx would not work either.

Once I installed seatd everything worked again. This was with kde/plasma desktop.

One other thing that may help... add console=tty12 to your grub line... I also add vga=794 to make the font smaller in-case the video module hasn't started, just makes it readable, for me. And may give more clues when it won't start properly.

## ALSA  warning runtime restore failed with errors
