Cool!
Just tried to access the GNUinOS website. "Site Unavailable" and currently suspended? Anyone else seeing this?
Does a new entry get created if you plug a storage device in?
Nope. The entries only get created when mounted. TDE desktop does show the devices available, but only mounts them when the icons are selected.
With no removable media plugged in:
ls -la /media/sde2/ total 8 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 22 2021 . drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Jan 12 16:36 .. -rw------- 1 root root 0 Apr 22 2021 .created_by_pmount
Good catch! I see the same thing. It must be a pmount "thing" that happens. I always use the mount/unmount commands via the TDE desktop, but maybe something with pumount happens every so often. Interesting. I'll keep a closer eye on when this happens. Thanks!
Thank you for your reply and reassurance. Removed them all with no apparent harm done.
It just seemed out of the ordinary to me that these old references stuck around. On any other Linux distro. I've ever used, the mounted sd devices usually got cleared from the /media folder automatically when they were unmounted.
I'm not sure if this specific to Trinity (which is what the Exe derivative of Devuan uses) or if it's a Devuan thing, but my /media folder is filled with references to old USB storage devices that were once plugged into my netbook. Is it safe for me to just go in as root and remove all of these old references, or is there a better way to get rid of them (aka purge them)?
Look at them all! I detest clutter like this.

That was the case before although the Debian packages were compatible with Devuan. TDE now have specific repos for all Devuan versions (and R14.0.11 is released today, in case anyone still thinks it's old, unmaintained code)
I've been using the Devuan trinity repository in my Exe desktop for the last year now and they work great! It's so nice being able to upgrade my Trinity desktop as soon as a new release is available. I've upgraded TDE twice with no problems at all. TDE just keeps on getting better and better.
Just recently download exegnu-beowulf-20211012 and noticed that Pale Moon has replaced FireFox as the pre-installed web browser (along with Konqueror). Although I prefer using the SeaMonkey Web-suite, Pale Moon was still a nice surprise to see.
Good choice, David!
I've always installed Maelstrom when ever I set up a new system.
That was a good read, your experience was much like mine. I was using KDE on SuSE/openSUSE for 19-20 years, and in recent years I found myself longing for the good old days of KDE 3.x. I found exe gnu linux in about 2019 and fell in love with it. The day I tried exe gnu for the first time was the last day for me on openSUSE.
Thanks, Andy! I definitely feel the same way about KDE 3.x and (what turned in to) Trinity. It's certainly the DE that works best for me and Exe seems to have the perfect implementation of it. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog post!
It's been over a year since I switched my main OS over to Exe GNU/Linux. If anyone is interested, here's my "Year In Review" running Exe. For the record, I'm running a fully updated i386 Exe (ascii) install with TDE 14.0.10.
So I gave SeaMonkey a whirl, by downloading their binary package from their website, and it actually ran really well on this machine. Youtube playback was smooth, but the audio didn't work. I imagine that it was compiled with the PA dependency, so can't fault it for that given that I don't have PA installed. Page loads were slower, but that's what ya get on today's Internet when you're not using Ad Block. It did seem to be more frugal with memory than Firefox, so it could be good for low end hardware.
Was neat how much SeaMonkey still looked like the Netscape Navigator I remember using in Windows 95.
Hey, I'm glad you gave it a spin. Very well assessed, too. It's not perfect, but I really do like using it.
A very good comparison. How about SeaMonkey? This is my browser of choice.
I've tested TDE with ExeGNU, Q4OS and PCLinuxOS recently and they all use a similar amount of RAM.
ExeGNU and PCLinuxOS use around 230-240MB and Q4OS uses ~260MB (didn't use swap on any of them). They all use Trinity DE and Trinity Windows Manager so they're pretty much identical. Only Q4OS uses systemd.
Is it possible that it's a new install and maybe you installed other programs which were running on the other distros? Fotoxx could rely on some non-free service or something that's not present in Devuan but that's just a guess. Strange.
Also I've discovered ExeGNU very recently and the next day while searching for it I found your article, it was helpful and I found this forum so thanks for that davidb. I think its a very usable truly free/open distribution and wonder why it has so little coverage.
Just in case you don't know there is an email to contact the developer info@exegnulinux.net which is listed on the sourceforge site you could try that. There is a 32bit beowulf iso under testing so I don't know why there hasn't been a new release.
Hey, thanks! I'm glad you found the review useful. Just my way of trying to bring more attention to a well deserved project.
As for the Fotoxx thing, yes, I wasn't sure what the difference was and it could be just because Exe is new and "fresh" on my system with nothing else getting in the way and hogging up resources. Maybe it's a pulseaudio thing. We'll see as time goes on. It was just a nice little bonus, there!
I didn't look in under Testing, on SourceForge. So, perhaps it's just Dave finding enough time in his schedule to accomplish everything he wants to. In the meantime, however, installing ASCII and doing a system update has worked just fine.
Sorry, systemd... I'll remember that.

When I get around to it, I'll check and see what RAM is available when running Q4OS. I just thought maybe not having systemd is a benefit on many levels. Up until finding Exe and Devuan, I never really payed much attention to what service manager my system used. I was impressed that Fotoxx wasn't complaining about low RAM for the first time in the nine years I've used this laptop.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, so if the Admins need to move this topic somewhere else, then I understand.
I've used several Linux distros on my Lenovo T-61 with 1GB of RAM, which includes PCLinuxOS, Elementary, Q4OS and now ExeGNU/Linux (which of course is a derivative of Devuan) . And, throughout all of these versions of Linux, when ever I fired up Fotoxx (one of my favorite photo editors), it always complained about having "low RAM" and that it's performance may be slowed.
But, today I got around to installing Fotoxx on my new Exe/Trinity desktop and I saw no low RAM warning. I was a little surprised. I don't know a lot about this sort of thing, but could this change in what I'm used to seeing be a result of my system no longer relying on SystemD? That's about the only major difference that comes to mind, as I've used TDE with Q4OS, as well as PCLinuxOS but still got that low RAM warning.
Any thoughts on this?
Greetings! I've just recently stumbled upon ExeGNULinux (and Devuan for that matter) and really liked what I've been seeing these past couple of weeks. I've been using Q4OS for about six years now and what makes it a great OS for me, I see reflected in Exe and Devuan. The dev teams have done a real nice job with this distro.
I hope it's okay with the community here, I've just posted a review of my experiences with Exe on by blog, HERE, if anyone is interested in giving it a read. However, as you reading this are most likely a Devuan user already, my review will be preaching to the choir.
