I know I have been building MATE since 2016 for devuan, for every update that comes from debian on this packages:
mate-applets
mate-indicator-applets
mate-power-manager
mate-session-managera problem will occur
This package have first or second degree dependencies on systemd, in you case I think you need to rebuild this packages

At today yes are "personal" project.
mate 1.25 for chimaera while 1.22 is for beowulf
The source for 1.25.x version comes from github, it doesn't exist 1.25 on salsa 
if i can build 1.24 for beowulf i bring that maybe

the sources unlike mate and cinnamon are those of debian, let me know if something is wrong

maybe, I've always built/tested and mostly used for testing, for both MATE and cinnamon.
For devuan ceres and debian sid packages are updated frequently and when you run apt-get upgrade some devuan packages will upgrade to debian version
example:
policikit-<devuan_version> to be --------> policykit-<debian_version>
upower-<devuan_version> to be --------> upower-<debian_version>
this can broke your desktop environment
If you use ceres/sid discourage upstream repo

Hi devuaners,
as for my machines, I use a series of scripts to upgrade from ascii to beowulf and install the various desktop environments
they are very simple scripts, just some function and some variable nothing particularly difficult.
If someone wanted to work on it they could become scripts for migrating from debian buster to devuan beowulf

mate-power-manager was systemd dependent and I have rebuild without it, with the latest updates the repo should work well and all packages should be installable, same speech applies to cinnamon.
Let me know if everything is ok with mate and cinnamon

only battery icon , as far as I know thereisn't no workaround for Suspend/Hibernat button
just my opinion but is not showstopper, and the bug came from upower

@mrgreenjeans I built mate 1.14* directly for devuan jessie, for ascii I have rebuild 1.16*
@Afuerst some users have also problem with the icon battery, with mate 1.14 this small problem are solved
*mate 1.14 and 1.16 are available from an external repository (hezeh.org)

what version of mate and upower you use?
some problems can be caused by packages not upgraded to systemd-free version
puts this code in your terminal:
dpkg-query -L upowerand
mate-bout and show us the results
