"We are building the new neuro-anatomy of the human race. In the process we are destroying the human attention system, changing our idea of what it means to be human. The effect on our capacity for freedom and self-government is devastating, but not so bad for those who want to govern us. People are increasingly aware of the problem, but don't know what to do. In this talk, I explain how and why."

Why Freedom of Thought Requires Attention

Here at Devuan are trying to fix our small corner of this bigger problem.  Title of the conference was "tl;dr". Yes, this talk is longish but well worth the time . . . imo, of course.

#1902 Re: Installation » Beowulf ISO for a server install » 2019-07-26 17:31:34

Beowulf has not been released yet.  If you want to upgrade, just change ascii to beowulf in your sources.list after fully updating and upgrading.

#1903 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Beowulf: UPower 0.99 removed? Versus Logitech Unifying Receiver » 2019-07-20 16:20:12

Except for the few packages we need to clean up and blacklisted packages, Devuan pulls directly from Debian repos via redirect.  Have no idea how others downstream from Debian do it.

#1905 Re: Off-topic » Mate and Trinity » 2019-07-19 06:45:06

In our case it's because no one has volunteered to package and maintain it.  Last year I had a discussion with the Trinity folks about doing just that but in the end, no one stepped up to do the work.

#1906 Re: Off-topic » What other distro are you using (besides devuan)? » 2019-07-18 18:33:05

There is another distro?   LOLOL!

(Couldn't resist)

#1907 Re: Off-topic » Boom Times or financial apocalypse » 2019-07-16 20:40:00

That would be the second lock on this thread.  Let's see if Devuan users can get it together to stay on topic and not wander off into flights of fancy (that might be very real to them).  Anyway . . . it IS in OT.  Time will tell . . .

#1908 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Running refractasnapshot on "classical" installed systems » 2019-07-13 07:12:11

Something is definitely going on with refractasnapshot and compression/decompression.  I don't begin to understand it but here's a report of a similar failure.  fsmithred will figure it out eventually.

#1909 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [Solved] Grub "savedefault" not working » 2019-07-13 01:05:29

I suspect the question is probably "what is different between mint and devuan".

#1910 Re: Installation » Xfce: TraditionalOK from mate-themes should be blue, but it's black » 2019-07-12 21:33:46

Are you talking about the titlebar?  You need to select TraditionalOk in the Window Manager settings in addition to choosing the theme.

Welcome!  Nice that you finally decided to take a leap and say hi.  How about sharing some of your Devuan-related work here or here.  Or perhaps applying some of your talents towards improving Devuan at the source.

I always use direct email method to report bugs not reportbug which can do weird things.

Thanks.

I also ran this command for libpulse0 and it shows that of the apps I have installed, that simple screen recorder, mpv, mplayer, and mate-settings-daemon (among others) depend upon it. Looking at the description for libpulse0 in Synaptic it says it is PulseAudio client libraries. Why would these apps depend on libpulse0 especially since a lot of people on Linux don't use Pulseaudio? I find that disturbing, even though I don't fully know why.  hmm

It's part of a "lock-in" on the way to a one-size-fits-all OS that will be nothing like what we have known and loved.  Modularity will be a thing of the past.  At least they'll try to do that.  Resistance is not futile.  There is always a way around the mousetrap.   big_smile

Anyway, i am still using FF52.9 ESR because some extensions i rely on are no more compatible with the newer versions of FF.

I was also on 52.9 ESR until a few days ago when I finally upgraded.  It is a bit of a clusterf**k and several days later I'm still trying to get it back close to where it was.  It's now in a somewhat acceptable state.  But since I use it for very few things anymore, it's not a biggie.

#1915 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Installing VirtualBox in Devuan ASCII » 2019-07-04 18:45:20

You can also add VB to your sources.list:

#1916 Re: News & Announcements » Devuan for ARM 64 on Raspberry Pi 4B? » 2019-07-04 08:41:15

@bobmon . . . you might want to drop into #devuan-arm on freenode.  parazyd does not frequent this forum.

#1917 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » PulseAudio? Seriously!? » 2019-07-04 08:37:00

I understand you can get around that dependency with apulse.  Search this forum amd DNG archives for discussion.  I need sleep or would do it myself.

#1918 Re: Installation » How do I install a package that requires snapd? » 2019-07-02 20:48:47

This response from riseup:

It wont be possible to decontaminate snapd, but we are producing a debian package, and it does work.

So if you're using Devuan, their VPN isn't going to work for you.

The lemmings will do what they will.  Swim upstream.  The trend is not alarming.  It is predictable.

#1920 Re: Off-topic » Boom Times or financial apocalypse » 2019-07-02 16:01:18

Well, it was educational.  The banking system is all smoke and mirrors or house of cards . . . pick your metaphor . . .  Jaromil's objection iiuc is that this crypto would be tied to individuals through their FB accounts (not anonymous) so  detailed profiles of very personal preferences and habits can be assembled that could be used to further commodify personal data.

Do it now if you're going to do it. You have about a week before jessie is retired. I heard that july 6 is the projected date.

I was in a bit of a panic over this date but then found this nugget in a post on FDN:

Jessie support is now handled by the LTS team rather than Security team. You should be OK until June 30, 2020.

https://wiki.debian.org/LTS

Evidently June 6 is not a hard cutoff date for jessie so we have a little breathing room.

Experiment with xrandr and/or lxrandr.  That should get things set up for you.

Has this issue been solved? What About switching to KDE?

KDE is available as an option - if you like bling and bloat.

Could i then from Jessie go straight to Beowulf or would i Need to upgrade to Ascii first?

Absolutely not.  You need to go through ascii to get to beowulf.

Hello ,

i am currently running Debian Wheezy and am wondering if there is an upgrade path for me to switch to Devuan Jessie.

The current Desktop Environment is Gnome3 and i have Radeon Fglrx Driver installed (which i would deinstall prior due to suggested non-compatibility with Jessie).

Yes, there is!  You'll find documentation here.  I'm not 100% sure if you can go directly from Wheezy or need to upgrade to Debian Jessie first.  Gnome is a no-go so the suggestion is to switch to Xfce before the upgrade.  Devuan has the same firmware available as Debian.

Note that in sources.list, jessie-updates is no longer in use for old-stable so would throw errors.
