Hello ,
am having considerable difficulty with Devuan 6 to reamin stable,
with previous Devuan do not remember encountering similar issues, but it could be resolved.
was switchting today from DE (Xfce) to (MATE) on Devuan 6;
did noteice that after entering username - password - there is a 30+ second delay and then a "beachball" for around 10second until desktop clears and loads fully.
have hoped it could be resolved by updateing to Devuan 7,
but the error remain for now;
please if someone could advise with the error?
according to "dmesg" it looks like this

This looks a bit suspicious, to me..... maybe check grub configuration....

thank you,
updating grub did not resolve; previsouly, with xfce4, the issue did not occur.

This sounds like the same delay that I get on my older computer, although I can't be sure.
This fixes it for me. Open /etc/default/grub as root.
Find the line called: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
Change it to read:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet loglevel=3 splash noresume"
Save and exit. Then run sudo update-grub.
Hopefully it fixes your issue. If it doesn't, it shouldn't hurt anything.

thank you, it hasn't resolved yet.
there must be more going on ¸~ since i noticed the older laptop is booting Devuan 7 faster than the 2 year old desktop PC (with whistles&bells) ~ Deskop booting hangs around also at "CUPS" , not sure whats going on, but instead of re-applying Devuan fresh, this time i'd rather like to find out.

What display manager are you using? Whichever it is, stop it, run startx as your normal user and examine /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any warnings/errors.
