G'day, anybody use wine? I use wine-staging and yabridge to run a couple of vsts. Previously when i used it on debian 12 xfce it worked pretty good. All works the same on devuan 5 xfce except one thing. If I leave the vst gui open I get problems with the sound cutting out. I use jack for the sound. Anyone with any ideas as to why this could be or where I should start looking for solutions?

I have been using wine for a while. On ASCII and on Chimaera. Main application LTSPICE. But that started to behave more and more to my frustration; the latest version even worse than LTSPICE4 from XP times. Other - 16bit - apps also became less and less usable with "each" upgrade of wine.
I am currently considering to isolate some old windows (maybe XP) in qemu for that kind of stuff. And/or a Hackintosh within qemu. Of course isolated from the internet outside my LAN.

Hello:
... using wine for a while. On ASCII and on Chimaera.
I started to use Wine when I moved permanently to Linux.
Before that, I double booted Linux and XPSP3 solely because of my long time email client: David Harris' Pegasus Mail which I have used since W3.11.
Being able to use Wine/Pegasus Mail was the deal breaker.
Once I got Wine running on Linux (Ubuntu? Mint? CrunchBang? cannot recall), that was it, no more XP.
I do recall that one distribution (Mint?) included a very easy to install Wine package in their repositories.
Once installed, everything was in place and worked right out-of-the-box, installing a Windows application was a breeze.
I have had Wine in every distribution since then and have had it running on Linux Devuan since Jesse, ca. 2017.
No mayor problems to speak of. A bonus to all that was that I did not have to ditch my all time favourite photo application: Irfan Skiljan's Irfan View.
That's about it.
Best,
A.

I also use Wine. Version 8.0 had some issues with PhotoFiltre and IrfanView, but those got fixed in Wine 10.
Mp3DirectCut, zKanji and GraphicsGale are some examples of what works great.
Installing was easy; just make sure to get the 32-bit dependencies and then generate the 32-bit prefix - preferably as default .wine, as it tends to be more reliable than 64-bit according to the documentation.
When it works, it works fine. Problems usually have solutions.
.NET/Mono stuff can be troublesome, you need wine-mono for these programs, not just regular Mono from the repositories.
If anyone is having problems with blurry fonts and improper scaling of windows in Wine 10, try adding this to the registry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]
(Default)=~ HIGHDPIAWARE
This will make Wine fonts smoother and easier to read:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"FontSmoothingGamma"=dword:00000578
"FontSmoothingType"=dword:00000002
Then in terminal: $ fc-cache -fv
(or re-login)
If buttons are missing minimize/maximize/close symbols:
Copy the /usr/share/wine/fonts/marlett.ttf font to $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/Fonts/

Hello:
... buttons are missing minimize/maximize/close symbols:
Yes !!!
Thank you very much for that. =^)
It was the one annoying thing I have been procrastinating about for the longest while.
Actually for a few years, never got around to it.
Thanks a lot for your input.
Suggestion:
How about an [Index] entry with the [Wine & Devuan] label to post solutions such as this last one?
Best,
A.

No problem, glad to see that this information is actually useful to somebody! ^_^
Yes, with buttons it's such a small thing but very annoying I agree, that's why I bothered to look up a solution...
I think having a subforum for Wine-related questions is a good idea, the howtos tend to be scattered all over the internet (and many sites are laggy mess) so it's always nice to have a 'native' place where people can look up and post their guides & tips.

Hello:

All information is useful.
Information is power.

Quite so.
Seeing it solved made me realise just how annoying it was.
Thanks again.

Indeed.
Makes two of us.
Now let's see what management opines.
[OT]
My $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/Fonts/ directory has now gone from being barren/empty to having one *.ttf.
Something tells me that there should be more fonts there as some system and menu legends don't look so good.
What should I populate it with?

A.

A better Tahoma font (from a real Windows installation) may be a good choice, as the one shipped with Wine is very old and looks awful at certain sizes.
I tried and it didn't do much for me, but won't hurt in any case. Wine 10 apparently changed the look of system fonts (again), and in some dialogs the text is now very thin and almost unreadable. The Tahoma trick did not fix this, but the font smoothing options in the registry posted above at least made it look a bit nicer.

@rations
yabridge has problems with wine 9.22 and higher. If you want yabridge to be stable you need to downgrade to wine staging to 9.21. Then you need to lock the version to prevent upgrades.
If downgrading wine is a big issue for you, You could try using the development branch of yabridge that is targeting wine 10. It's not ready for release, but it is an optiion.
https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge … -embedding
Additional INFO : AV Linux MX Edition has a tool called Wine4VST that specifically ensure you have the correct version of wine for yabridge. I don't want to push you to a different distro, but I figured it was fair to let you know about the tool. You maybe able to use it on devuan since they are both debian based.

Hello:
... better Tahoma font ...
I played around with all the installed *.ttf fonts and found that [Calibri 16] did fine for now.
I also did a regedit for [HIGHDPIAWARE] which seems to have done something.
Curiously enough, the other suggested editions were already done.
[OT] (again)
Adding the missing [arial.ttf] to the fonts directory now made the text above the icon buttons too small.
I do recall I had this same issue many years go but cannnot recall if I fixed it of just kept the font that fit.
In any case, I cannot find a way to change the font or size.
[/OT]
If you have a solution to that, please consider starting a new thread.
I would not want to hijack this one which is about Wine but not related to PMail.
Thanks for your input.
Best,
A.

Have done these steps and dxvk fixes etc. Never had trouble with sound in the past only the graphics.

Maybe winetricks could help

In Wine 10, the ~ HIGHDPIAWARE value also fixed fullscreen games for me - without it, they opened in huge windows with only the top left corner visible. In Wine 8, there was no such problem so the switch is probably unnecessary there (or maybe not even recognized). Some suggest using ~ DPIUNAWARE instead if you have any scaling/blurring problems.

Sorry my suggestion was unhelpful. I figured you may of already done the suggested steps, but it didn't hurt to mention it. Audio cut outs is one of the issues related to 9.22 and newer.
The only time I've seen problems with audio cut out is when the latency setting in Jack was set to low. It just couldn't maintain the over demanding timings and caused the audio to cut out. Using a real-time kernel helps a lot with this issue. Since you specifically stated that the issue occurs when the vst gui is left open I'm convinced you are correct on blaming the issue one wine.
I am curious to see what the solution ends up being.
