Calculator freezes

Here's a desktop app that doesn't get discussed much! big_smile

The default calculator in Daedalus just doesn't work. Any time I start it, it just freezes and I have to kill it. Not a really big deal since I usually install Galculator, and prefer that. But the default app gets launched by default when you push the calculator button on any MS sponsored keyboard. So I've seen it pop up a few times. And been puzzled that it's always unusable.

What could be wrong with it?

Re: Calculator freezes

If it's a known issue it's something not linked to the word 'calculator' because nothing turns up. Could you possibly give me a pointer?

Re: Calculator freezes

I am sorry, I thought I responded to such a topic earlier. Maybe I mistook that for the German Debian forum.

Anyway, here is a useful link: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … ug=1059773

Re: Calculator freezes

Love me some Galculator, default calculator app I use in everything. One of those apps that really doesn't need any improving. It always just works.

Re: Calculator freezes

Galculator, Speedcrunch & Qalculate are working fine on my system, some of them like Speedcrunch you'll have to do a little configuration to your taste, just let me know if you need a little help with them, cheers!

Re: Calculator freezes

I still haven't found a calculator that works like good old Kcalc from KDE 3.5 (yes I know there is TDE which probably has preserved it):

in Kcalc if I want to calculate the result of deducting 20% of a certain amount (for example 50) I type:

50

-

20

%

and I get 40, while in Galculator such a basic and frequently used calculation doesn't work which is a shame because galculator otherwise seems quite decent and lightweight without loads of dependencies on gnome or kde stuff.

Re: Calculator freezes

I don't know anything about KDE 3.5's Kcalc. But I just did a quick test with Devuan Daedalus + Mate Desktop, and the Mate Calculator does support your example: 50 - 20% -> 40

Re: Calculator freezes

@Eeqmcsq thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't tried mate-calc yet as I hadn't come across it, it seems nice lightweight and it does indeed the percentage calculation as I'm used to, the only thing I'm not so happy about is the layout of the calculator buttons in it's window, the buttons seem quite small and very close together making it easy to accidentally press the wrong ones with the mouse cursor (this is at least under XFCE with the theme I'm using, maybe it differs with other themes).
I have to look into it further to see if the size and spacing of the buttons can be changed.

Re: Calculator freezes

Dinosaurs like me use bc. And other command line tools such as factor, gp and pexpr (that's part of GMP so may be hard to find).

Re: Calculator freezes

OK, I finally remembered to use the solution I found in certain threads. Disabling the automatic download of currency exchange rates does indeed solve the problem. It now loads and runs normally.

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=441309

dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/refresh-interval 0

It seems bizarre. Why did they do such a clumsy thing? Wasn't it easy to predict that the URL might be moved, or more likely, the owners of the website would notice the odd traffic and move it?

I use Trinity, and can confirm that the old Kcalc is alive and doing really well! big_smile
