JWM Windows Manager

Hello, this is my first post, and the question is if there is intention to create a spin with JWM, its light and works ok.
I have not enough knowlegment in programming or OS to create this. There is some guru here that can create this? or include
as another Desktop option in the installation?

+1. Crowz is nice!

Been playing with JWM myself, I think a nice light 32 bit Devuan version would be great for older machines.

In addition to the available spins of Devuan that use JWM, I'd like to encourage you to experiment with building your own.

You can do this in VirtualBox or Gnome Boxes (which is what I use) so that you can get the feel for it before committing to an actual installation on your hard drive.

First, let me state that I have no experience with JWM...but that's how we learn. Since you have some JWM experience, you would know more of what to install later on.

Here is a very basic outline of what I would do if I wanted to try making my own JWM build.

1. Download the Devuan Jessie netinstall .iso

2. Install it in VirtualBox or Gnome Boxes. HOWEVER...when you get to the step where you choose a desktop, REMOVE ALL OF THE CHECKMARKS...then continue.

3. After the installation completes, you will boot into a full-screen CLI.

4. Sign in with the username and password that you used during the installation.

5. At the next command, enter

su

...then enter the root password that you chose during installation. You are now root and can install whatever you want.

6. This is my method; others may have another method...enter this command...

apt-get install lightdm

That will install basically everything you need for a functional desktop.

7. Then enter...

apt-get install jwm

That will install the JWM desktop.

Now, I don't know if installing JWM will include a terminal or not, so pay attention to what is installed along with jwm. If you don't see a terminal installed with it, then go ahead and install one now (the terminal of your choice); for example, ...

8.

apt-get install lxterminal

I don't know what terminal is most common with JWM...

9. You may also want to install synaptic, gdebi, and possibly wicd (networking)...

10.

apt-get install synaptic gdebi wicd

11. After you've installed those things, enter...

reboot

That will reboot the system, and it "should" give you a functional desktop, and with a terminal, synaptic, and gdebi...you should be able to install whatever else you need. Plus, installing gdebi will pull in a few other needful things.

I did see that you asked about JWM tools in another thread. This method won't help you there, but you will be able to build your own system from the ground up. It's a great way to learn friend!

If anyone with JWM experience sees this and notices where I'm wrong somewhere...please correct it.

OK, thanks for de advices, when i have time will try the STAR and Crowz.

Actually i am using Devuan base installation without desktop. Once installed i download the latest original version of JWM from http://www.joewing.net/projects/jwm/ and all the required packages associated with it (also X system ofcourse).

I migrated from debian to Devuan more than a year and i have been playing to see how it respond.

I have tried to learn more but i dont have enough skills in C programming....

The best is that one you have JWM working download and compile the next version is fast and easy.

Actually i dont install Rox, instead i install idesk and works fine for me.

greenjeans: not only for old computers also for modern computers, by example in virtualization mode with KVM it works great. More resources for virtualizated systems.

I logged in to my devuan openbox and opened a terminal and run the neofetch profiler

Compared to extremely similar setups with other systems on the same box, openbox in devuan
scored 1st with artix second by about 40% better. Systemd based systems were much much higher in ram.

I use to download distros as Refracta (looks great) and try it for funcionality.

The problem with using CD/DVD is that programs remain in older versions. By example i used Refracta to resize a partition with gparted and get a problem..... then download the latest gparted CD and it works.

Best than .iso files would be a restorable image to pendrive o flash device.

Can always download a newer version of any available application by using backports, enabled by default in /etc/apt/source.list & /etc/apt/preferences. Use...

$ sudo apt-get -t jessie-backports install <package-name>

JWM is a great Wm, easy to configure once you have the hang of the .jwmrc in the home directory and the ~/.config/jwm/autostart files. Recommend backing these files up to a location so you could retrieve them if something becomes corrupt. Only saying that because of personal experience. : )

Thank you for considering STAR, CROWZ or any Devuan image / or derivative. Have downloaded and installed each and every available distro and concluded any would be a suitable daily driver. It's what Devuan IS, rather than what it's NOT in my opinion.
