[SOLVED] File manager delay after boot/login

Hello all,

Devuan Beowulf on encrypted LVM. Gome DE (gdm3).
After boot and/or logon nautilus needs some five minutes to start. Once started it works fine.
Tried installing Thunar which doesn't present this problem.
Problem persists on different hardware.

It's merely an annoyance, but I'd like to have it solved.
Anyone an idea where to start looking?

Have you tried to start Nautilus from a terminal? May be some message there.

Terminal sits there and is processing. No messages.
During the five min. delay there are two nautilus instances showing in system monitor, one with memory allocated and one which looks dead.

Try this:

rm ~/.xsession-errors
nautilus

Then check ~/.xsession-errors after Nautilus launches.

what is ~/.cache/tracker/ doing ?

Erm, not sure. Tracking the cache, perhaps?

and therein is the answer. This is why i dislike where gnome is heading.

doesn't even show up anymore after replicating the problem.
I changed

~/.cache/tracker/

to

~/.cache/tracker.old

rebooted and the problem seems to be gone for now.

Maybe killing the tracker process as in https://www.noulakaz.net/2019/04/09/dis … t-need-it/ isn't a bad idea.

Startpage has become somewhat suspicious, but gnome is also, so... meh...

No need to mess around with gsettings, the indexing can be disabled from the options panel.

yes, i suppose it is a useful feature for some, i have read it that tracker, tracker miner etc have been known to use a lot of memory and cpu load in doing what they do. I dont use desktop environments anymore so im somewhat bias. Last year a security risk via gnome extensions was found called evilgnome, unrelated to tracker but i find these web extensions to be a security risk, im assuming tracker search is a gnome web extension?

Ah my bad... but it still requires a number of freedesktop.org type software... more than any other desktop environment. That being said, my reason for avoiding it is because its extremely bloated. Lumina Desktop in my opinion is the only good desktop environment. Though its default wallpaper was meh... I think they improved it on it since, but not sure.

i3-wm user here heh...

I like minimalism usually, especially for system configuration type software. Within what I consider reason...

My bad on the startpage reference, was only mentioning it because someone spoke of it in this thread. Aka, they brought up startpage I mean...

On topic though, pcmanfm is my current favorite file manager.

There is a "tracker search" extension (to which you have linked) but the tracker itself is part of the official GNOME desktop: https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/Tracker
