Hi,
I've managed to install Beowulf on a machine with the following components: MB Asus Prime B550M-A + AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G APU (Radeon Vega with GPU Cores Vega 7 RENOIR) + stock linux-image-4.19.0-12 + Mate Desktop. The system works well, but Xserver is running in VESA mode. To try to solve this,
I done :
1.- Upgrade firmware of the motherboard to the last version available on the web (I think date is 10-22-2020) => NO RESULT
2.- Install the last linux image from backports (linux-image-5.8.0-0.bpo.2-amd64) => System does not boot until you pass "nomodeset" in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT of the /etc/default/grub file. Booting with Kernel Image 5.8.0 NO RESULT, Xserver still run on VESA mode
Questions:
1.- What do I have to do to get the system work with Xserver in native mode?
2.- Why do I have to pass the "nomodeset" parameter to kernel 5.8 if in 4.19 I don't have to?
3.- Does anybody has a similar system working with Xserver in native mode?

First of all you should load the latest fimware-linux-nonfree from backports. I guess that is missing, your amd-graphics firmware package is outdated for this new HW.
What do you mean by:
Upgrade firmware of the motherboard to the last version available on the web (I think date is 10-22-2020)

This is very very new hardware. Build the latest stable kernel from git or kernel.org and ensure you install firmware, if that gives the same result fetch the mainline kernel and do the same. Don't expect miracles on few months old hardware though...

The package you need is the firmware-amd-graphics version in the beowulf-backports repository (dated 2020-09-18). You will also need the kernel metapackage from beowulf-backports to keep the newer kernel version updated, there will probably be several fixes for the 4650 soon.

Installing the 5.8 kernel from backports is a good approach, but only 50% of the job. When you can install the backports kernel, what hinders you to perform the other 50% and enter:

The kernel in backpors has been attemped:
2.- Install the last linux image from backports (linux-image-5.8.0-0.bpo.2-amd64) => System does not boot until you pass "nomodeset" in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT of the /etc/default/grub file
nomodeset effectively prevents that module loading, as it requires KMS, so loading it results in an unbootable or unusable system and not loading it results in X loading the vesa driver. Hence my advice to builld the latest stable (5.9.x) and then onto mainline if needed.
The missing firmware wont make any difference there.

You have no hardware rendering at all. Perhaps blackhole is right about the kernel.
We can take a look at the kernel ring buffer, that might have some clues. Run this command and post the URL it returns:

Well the Renoir firmware is loaded so it must be the Mesa version.
MX Linux have backported the Mesa packages to a beowulf-compatible base so you could try those:

A quick reply to this thread.
To me stability, and low administrative workload generation is a target I pursue with every laptop I configure for my clients (family mostly). Also privacy and usability are important to me.
The last 30 years I learned that the operating system should ripe and age with the hardware in use - to keep administration effort on the lowest possible level.
I recently got a Tuxedo "Aura 15" (a Clevo OEM) with AMD Ryzen 4700U and thus RENOIR graphic integrated.
As there is no (at least I didn't find it) ISO for chimera I booted a beowulf 3.1 iso and installed a fde chimera on it.
I painstakingly installed all the necessary firmware packages and the graphics just worked out of the box.
Ok chimera is testing ... (but a lot better the the preinstalled Ubuntu Frankendebian).
I only found that the KDE akonadi was even more crap than expected ('apt-mark hold "akonadi* packages"' helps to keep that uninstalled stuff out)- but I guess the overall workload to keep that laptop patched and functional the next 5 years is significantly lower than starting with (a heavily patched MX-Franken-)beowulf - and because of that reinstalling a chimera once it is officially released.
Your mileage may vary.
I just want to point out installing minimal beowulf and migrating it to chimera is an option for that brand new hardware.
