devuan fresh installation on HP laptop fails to load graphical desktop

hi all
I'm installing hp elitebook 840 with a fresh downloaded devuan iso but, on boot, system freeze with a blank screen and the cursor is blinking in the top left corner of the screen.

Installed:
- KDE
- server ssh

Any advice is welcome

I read around sometime HP laptops can have this issue
but i can't figure out how to detect what's wrong

I own a HP elitebook PC (Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8460p/161C)
and it runs like a charm with Devuan Beowulf.
All I can say is this:
- first of all, make sure you reset all BIOS-settings to default,
- then make sensible changes you wish to it.
- then, if UEFI boot mode is used, disable "Secure Boot" (That means DO NOT USE THE TPM)
You can use classic BIOS mode as well (CHS-mode for the disks). It's less tricky.
Then install normally.
Do you have any special graphics processor on board? Intel chips work well, but be careful if there is a NVIDIA or AMD GPU.

10th generation Intel chips onwards need a newer Mesa version than is available for Devuan beowulf. The same is true for the most recent AMD cards.

The OP should also note that all current graphics cards require non-free firmware even with the open source drivers supplied by the kernel.

removed all secure boot, tpm and other security settings
no success, same lock

graphic card is
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics (rev 02)

thanks for this link but no success here

I followed 1st step (added "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" to the end of the line that starts with "linux") but at boot (ctrl+x) I 've same blank screen with cursor blinking

What is your CPU? If it starts with 10 or 11 then you're shit out of luck with beowulf.

Some of the drivers will need non-free firmware so you can if not already

nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Add at the end of each line

contrib non-free

Then

apt update && apt upgrade -y

As of not connecting to ssh server , are you using a router and you are connected with wifi if so ,
Set a static ip from advanced options of your wicd or network manager or whatever you use then go to your router and forward / open port 22 for that ip

I followed your instructions but doesn't work
anyway sourcelist are updated but "apt upgrade" can't find anything to do: all seems to be already updated

after some time I watched devuan from afar I was determined to use it with the new laptop
I’m starting to think I can’t...

if there are other ideas please tell me

If Head_on_a_Stick tells you "What is your CPU? If it starts with 10 or 11 then you're shit out of luck with beowulf.",
it makes the matter a serious one.
Is it at all possible to start a fresh install from an USB stick and NOT install a graphics environment?
If so, why not to start in text mode, connect to the internet and edit your sources.list file as instructed?
I hope if you did an
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install firmware-linux-nonfree

after the installation, in this order.
Then you could try to install the xorg and desktop stuff, from the command-line. Some experience is required here, but it's doable.
Another way could be to upgrade to chimaera, which hopefully has a newer kernel that supports your CPU/GPU.
I hope I do not annoy you, I know how such problems can rattle the nerves...
BTW, my CPU is a older one: an i7 from 2012, so no problems here.

It's not just the kernel. That generation of Intel integrated graphics chips require a newer Mesa version.

The OP could try chimaera now or even add the MX Linux repositories — they've backported Mesa to a buster base, I have a guide to adding & pinning their repositories over at forums.debian.net — but neither option is ideal. I would usually recommend Arch for new hardware but most people here won't like that because of the init system that shall not be named (or spelled correctly).

No xorg. No non-free. Run 'refractainstaller' to install to hard drive. Or do a debootstrap install.

There is artix linux which is a derivative of archlinux that has 3 different inits to choose from - openrc, runit and s6.

as Void kernels are from 2021, [5.10.17], it would be quick way of exploring this issue.

whell, to tell the whole story, I'm leaving my historical distro cause need a new laptop and my historical distro still use "the init system that shall not be named".

Currently, on my new laptop, I have a dual boot: artix and devuan. Artix boots correctly but (1) it's not stable as I need and (2) I prefer Devuan.

With dual boot (I think) I can try Chimaera but...
Head_on_a_Stick had a guide but says "but neither option is ideal".
fsmithred had chimaera-based live isos but: no xorg...

Well, I undestand, it’s too early for chimaera.
Do you think it’s possible, in the near future, to experiment with chimaera and a desktop environment?

You can always install X afterwards.

For example:

# apt install tasksel
# tasksel

^ That will let you select any of the full desktop environments, just as you would from a netinstall ISO image.

voidlinux (x86_64, glibc, xfce) installed correctly
works great!

next time I'll try refracta and chimaera
