Hi, brilliant and thank you for sharing
Question , the part around "Since 2026-02-01, Debian-13 rejects signatures using SHA1 used in the NV D-12 repo. Additionally, D-13 migrated signature verification tool from gpgv to sqv that does not accept additional options from apt sources. To workaround it all, you need to......"
Does that compromise security in any material way for a home laptop user, and did you have to follow this part of the guide?
Appreciate your advice. Cheers
I'm not getting my hopes up. This shows the issue has been raised formerly on the Nvidia side for months https://github.com/NVIDIA/cuda-repo-man … er-sign-up
Hi
Another thought following your point re the mess using the Nvidia run files causes. That is use of containerisation.
Reading this post, developers are using that concept by putting the driver in the opt folder https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/c … /124836/15
However they are having to use the the utility prefix, open gl prefix and 32 bit compatibility libraries to avoid messing up the usr bin folders and the usr libraries. The prefixes used and what they do is in the Nvidia installer code options section https://github.com/NVIDIA/nvidia-instal … on_table.h
We can see in this post that a user called wild tux https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/l … tall/46411 had to set x prefix back to usr.
These links help infer the risk of having X11 items sandboxed and hence why the defaults for these are not to sandbox to avoid a display server crash
This is far as I have got. I then started getting a bit lost. It would need someone with more experience to advise if this kind of approach has any legs
"The desire of my soul is to be helpful, yet it no longer has the ability to relevantly do so"
Never degrade yourself nor underestimate the impact you have. For example your posts/ energy got me reading alot more about Linux over last few days than I ever have.
All the best
Hi
I did a bit of reading as I have a 4k screen on my laptop with the same card, but no idea if this would work. I haven't got round to trying to set up the Nvidia card on it at all.
1. The Cuda drivers are proprietary not open source.
2. The Nvidia guide talks of creating a preferences.d file to ensure pinning is applied to ensure only the 580 version is used when later updates are run https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesl … cking.html
3. The log file here explains why the pinning method is advised by Nvidia https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/d … nts/353805
4. The NVDC section of the Debian wiki advises to use the pinning method with caveats. https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsD … 2_.26_D-13
This might or might not help. I am new to Devuan and not a developer, but sharing incase of use
One of the devuan founders created one. I was reading about it the other day but never tried it. It's called Jaromail. It's on the dyne.org website where devuan is listed. I have no idea whether it is compatible in the way you need, but just thought I would mention
It's a nice thing to offer but how would you find the boundary? Eg 2.4 GHz Bluetooth clash with 2.4ghz WiFi card, throwing the wifi is not a Devuan problem though not the desired result on install, or xfce tiny writing on 4k screen upon install, but fine on another lower res laptop etc.....
The video explains the thinking quite well, all be it choppy content. I get why it was a suggested watch
I thought that there is a clear rule which goes
Devuan Version: Debian version -7 ie take the first debian version where system d is the default init which is where devuan got rid of it hence Devuan 1 forked Debian 8
Hence why
Devuan 6 forks Debian 13 (most recent stable)
Devuan 5 forks Debian 12
Devuan 7 fork Debian 14 (so testing)
So if you know the Debian versions and the first where system d became default, then devuan version is easily mapped?
And then you always map Devuan Ceres to Debian Sid as a constant for unstable?
Thank you! I'll have a look
Devuan 6 excaliber is now installed on my wife's laptop (after she saw and tried out devuan on my Toshiba and Clevo 4k laptop). She is so happy with Devuan on hers, knowing there is no background system doing unwanted things to her laptop.
Trialled Ubuntu prior, it forced Firefox to be a snap when when trying to put the deb version so deleted it. Then Debian 13 with Gnome, absolutely hated it.
The laptop with XFCe is running very quick, no crashes and no issues and no random updates. She has made a donation to the distro via dyne.org. in appreciation of the efforts by Devuan developers.
Ventoy USB worked for install flawlessly (Net Iso) using mem disk mode.
Install and config of same software and replicating all my scripts, ufw rules, and launchers from my other laptops to hers took about 1.5 days. Is there a smarter way to do this when replicating set up onto another laptop (ie config, scripts, launchers and software? ) . I've been looking at Penguin Eggs (which looks a bit tricky for me) so wondered if there was a better way than manually setting up from scratch (or figuring out penguin eggs) ?
.Hi I installed devuan 6 excaliber net iso using a ventoy USB. It detected WIFI during install where one laptop had an Intel Wifi card and the other an atheros card. On one of the installs I had to use "mem disk" mode on the ventoy usb to get it to work. I know some people have had issues with ventoy. There are other forum posts about that
I solved the above by entering the QT Scale command in the /usr/local/vpn.ac/bin/run script directly as that script had a pkexec command so nothing else I tried worked. If I shouldn't have added the QT scaling command there please let me know
Congrats! Just had a look at the page. Great effort
I'm trying to make the text and window size bigger for the vpn.ac client on my system because it's too small to read on the 4k display
I know the app is made with QT, and the path to launch it is /usr/local/vpn.ac/bin/run.
How can I force this specific app to scale up so I can read the buttons properly?
I think I'm meant to use QT_SCALE_FACTOR=2 on the EXEC line reading the QT manual, but not sure where best to place it ie in what file.
Thank you
Hi thank you. I used console setup as advised. I worked out that the kernel font is terminus 32x16 which comes through so isn't big enough. However I found dejavu 43x24 (and there are even larger ones) which work in console set up.
Fascinating topic. I hated the way Microsoft was getting too overwhelming with all the features, forced AI and updates etc on my laptops. Then windows 10 was no longer supported. I would have had to landfill 2 laptops (one with 4k screen and 16gm ram,). I am non technical and busy with my own commitments but curious about this thing called Linux. I asked AI and Gemini suggested Ubuntu , Linux Mint and for my very old 2008 laptop (4gb ram but SSD drive), Devuan. I had never heard of these. It explained Devuan is a fork of Debian created by VUAs. It will ruin flawlessly etc. I took the plunge, not knowing what system d was or anything really and realised Devuan needed a load of config . Using AI , forum help and perseverance I got the old 2008 laptop set up in a few days and now implementing on the 4k laptop. The topic of "init freedom" kept coming up. I had to figure out what that meant. At the end of it I realise that building one thing to do something properly and connect to next thing is brilliant, instead of building a complicated mess with no transparency. I apply that philosophy where I can in every day work now eg the way I will construct a spreadsheet or think about solutions. Without AI making me aware of Devuan's existence, and learning how to do/ not to do things, I wouldn't have got here. But then with AI it's easy to get lazy or degrade quality of output or principles. My wife played around on my laptop and found it so transparent, and thought it was so cool that devuan was founded on values that stand against corporate greed, and a reminder of human ability to be more conscious in choices instead of illusionary freedom, she is switching to Devuan on her laptop. Maybe I am not a desired user of Devuan (not sure), given my use of AI in the story, but the principles behind the distro are what makes me use Devuan as my only operating system of choice (plus it runs absolutely brilliantly. I haven't had a single crash, screen freeze or forced restart. Laptops are running blazing fast. Bluetooth is flawless. WiFi connection is instant and way better. Performance is amazing, wireless printer connects and locks in, no cut out. Nothing undesired, nothing forced on my laptop). The excellence should never be compromised.
Hi thank you. One issue is the writing size on tty1 when the screen switches to show all the start up scripts loading. I have terminus installed and a larger size selected on console. However that doesn't achieve anything. Any ideas? Some of the earlier load screens have big writing but once it gets to the screen where scripts load, the writing goes small again
Hi managed to kind of solve this.
For the initial blue Grub screen, I added these to the etc/default/grub file
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768
GRUB_FONT=/usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2
Then I edited Slim desktop - slim.theme file with
## panel
# Offset coordinates from top-left of screen
input_panel_x 150
input_panel_y 150
# Top-left corner of the invisible typing entry box (relative to panel)
input_name_x 108
input_name_y 265
# Place text labels safely above the typing entry point
username_x 40
username_y 100
password_x 40
password_y 100
# Position status and feedback strings
msg_x 100
msg_y 300
# Position session toggle strings (F1 Text)
session_x 100
session_y 380
# True high-visibility sizes for 4K
input_font Open Sans:medium:size=36
msg_font Open Sans:medium:size=36
session_font Open Sans:medium:size=36
username_font Open Sans:medium:size=36
Also Icons in system tray which weren't auto sizing and too slim top bar: XFCE Panel Preferences: Row Height 37 pixels and Status Tray Plugin, set systray icons to size automatically
Once I get to the NVIDIA drivers, if I get that working I'll post further for completeness.
Note to my initial query about NetISO, that worked perfectly on Ventoy (though I know sometimes can be an issue as others have mentioned )Hi, I'm working on this install (I used netISO) and login screen writing and box to enter user name is tiny. I sorted XFCE scaling (set to x2) and got the start up and shut down text all sized nicely. However it is the lightdm I believe I need to configure or maybe the desktop slim set up. I tried editing Lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf by putting xft-dpi=192 but that didn't work. Also I did GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080 and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep but that didn't work either.
The initial blue screen that comes up has tiny wiring, and the login screen
Any suggestions? Thank you
Hi, thank you for the advice. I haven't started the project yet. I will be looking to start in the next week or so. Will update.
Thank you for the warm welcome and encouragement. Kind regards
Thank you. I'll take a look
Hi,
I recently took the plunge and set up my old toshiba laptop (A300-1BZ) with Devuan 6 XFCE. I am now looking to install Devuan 6 onto my main laptop. This laptop is a Clevo (bought 2017) with specs including:
Optimus Series: 15.6" Matte 4K IPS LED Widescreen (3840x2160)
Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 7700HQ (2.8GHz, 3.8GHz Turbo)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 16GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti - 4.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1
1TB Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
Intel 2 Channel High Def. Audio + SoundBlaster™ Cinema 3
GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® AC-8265 M.2 (867Mbps, 802.11AC) +BT 4.0, vPRO
Question: any health warnings regarding config (as the spec is a lot more modern than the Toshiba?) and also is the AI advising correctly?
According to AI,it is advising:
1. the NVIDIA card will need something called : nvidia-xrun to manage it vs the Intel card as well "requires careful driver installation to avoid the dreaded "black screen" on boot"
2. 4K on XFCE won't work brilliantly and risks legacy programmes not scaling (even if theme and font DPI adjusted). Better to get KDE Plasma
3. Don't install using NetISO , use Live USB instead to mitigate risk of the WIFI firmware missing on install and test out the 4K scaling / NVIDIA set up first
Note: all my files are backed up and I intend to transition fully to Devuan 6 Excaliber on that laptop
Any advice appreciated
