#1 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » xorg and wall (usr/bin/wall) » 2026-08-06 07:47:31

what I understand until now :
wall (root) writes to all open tty1 - tty7
Does not write to ptys not owned by root

ps aux | grep tty7
root 1369 2.1 0.2 26629380 192864 tty7 Ssl+ 08:57 0:04 /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg :0 -seat seat0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch

this is owned by root.
The user (uid>=1000) logs out of his x session.
lightdm is restarted owned by user lightdm (111:118) from init process
User (uid>=1000) logs in again through the login window.
Then pam? or some authorization process kills the lightdm process, because the writing by wall has confused the rights.
The wall messages of the past  show up in the tty7 and no x-session appears.
lightdm must be restarted to get a fresh lightdm login window.
This time the login of uid=1000 is successful, but after the logout above procedure repeats.
The wall messages are still there, augmented by all test messages in  the mean time.
I can confirm, that xterm opened by uid 1000 receives the wall message from root, but mate terminal not

It looks like i must trace a failed login session to find its cause.

#4 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » xorg and wall (usr/bin/wall) » 2026-08-05 09:00:13

this is a standard daedalus install with mate as desktop.

aptitude show lightdm
Paket: lightdm
Version: 1.26.0-8+devuan1

aptitude show mate-desktop
Paket: mate-desktop
Version: 1.26.0-2

aptitude show mate-terminal
Paket: mate-terminal
Version: 1.26.0-2

Repeated test : sent wall-message from root, arrived at 2 consoles (Alt-F2, owned by me), did not arrive at mate terminal.

which wall
/usr/bin/wall

In ancient times (xdm, X11, EDIT:fvwm*) I used to send myself messages out of scripts using /usr/bin/wall .
So I knew that e.g. a job is finished or some action to be taken.
This message showed up on all consoles and xterms or similar.

Recently I tested with wall to learn about progress of a script, but lightdm traps the message .
Does not show up on an open mate terminal.
Actually lightdm traps the message.
It shows then up on logout EDIT: /login from Xorg and keeps the xserver to restart.
Manually I must do

service lightdm restart

to get a fresh login window until I logout again. Same game.

wall used to inform users  from impending administration actions like shutdown or restart.
This function has been destroyed from the new habit of lightdm.

Apart from being a bug.
Now I have to find where this messages hang and they should be deleted on a restart of xserver.

It seems that the new generation of maintainers has no idea about multiuser systems.

Now I have used the actual backports kernel .
uname -a : Linux lenovo-r500 6.12.85+deb12-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.12.85-1~bpo12+1 (2026-04-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Now xrandr is able to establish a dual monitor session, how ever it also stops aftersome delay. (few minutes).
Obviously X stops sending a signal through DP-1. The TV complains "No signal"

Current Operating System: Linux lenovo-r500 6.1.0-45-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.170-1 (2026-04-30) x86_64

when running
echo detect > /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-1/status

then the kernel reports the monitor as connected. when opening a console, the console is mirrored on the TV monitor.
However the console disappears after a few 10 or 20 seconds.
The kernel reports then disconnected.
cat /sys/class/drm/*/status
disconnected

Before XRandr is then able to detect the TV Monitor, but not able to create a dual display setting.
How to make the kernel keep the detected used displayport ?

#9 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » amprolla package » 2026-04-03 09:26:02

My goal is to merge packages to a distribution.
Source 1 : a mirror of devuan e.g.
Source 2 : my own modified packages. Many have deficiencies, which upstream is not willing to fix.
So I have to learn how to make a deb package and how to apply preferences for amprolla.

It would give to community a push.

I have a variety of Ethernet clients in my intranet.
They should all have the same time.
I have an elderly fritz.box router, which can and does provide time service in the intranet on its port 123 , udp
It has a time server pool upstream.

I checked sntp :

LANG=C apt show sntp
Package: sntp
Version: 1:4.2.8p15+dfsg-2~1.2.2+dfsg1-1+deb12u1
...
Source: ntpsec (1.2.2+dfsg1-1+deb12u1)
 ...
APT-Sources: http://de.deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus/main amd64 Packages
Description: Network Time Protocol client (transitional package)
This is a transitional package to transition to NTPsec.
It can be safely removed once all uses of sntp(1) have been converted to
 run ntpdig instead.
Replaces: ntp (<< 1:4.2.8p15+dfsg-2~), time-daemon

transitional : don't install

LANG=C apt show ntpsec
Package: ntpsec
Version: 1.2.2+dfsg1-1+deb12u1
Priority: optional
...
Breaks: ntp (<< 1:4.2.8p15+dfsg-2~)
Replaces: ntp (<< 1:4.2.8p15+dfsg-2~), time-daemon

This service contacts about 19 pool servers. I felt this was too much

I set the ntpsec.conf to resolve only to the Fritz!box
But Instead it contacted a google time server and named it *fritz.box in the output of ntpq -p
what a scam.

So I searched and found

LANG=C apt show ntpsec-ntpdate -a
Package: ntpsec-ntpdate
Version: 1.2.2+dfsg1-1+deb12u1
Priority: optional

...
APT-Sources: http://deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus/main amd64 Packages
Description: client for setting system time from NTP servers
NTP, the Network Time Protocol, is used to keep computer clocks
accurate by synchronizing them over the Internet or a local network,
or by following an accurate hardware receiver that interprets GPS,
 DCF-77, or similar time signals.
 .
ntpdate is a simple NTP client that sets a system's clock to match
the time obtained by communicating with one or more NTP servers. It
is not sufficient, however, for maintaining an accurate clock in the
long run. ntpdate by itself is useful for occasionally setting the
time on machines that do not have full-time network access, such as
 laptops.
 .
This is the NTPsec version of ntpdate. NTPsec is a secure, hardened,
and improved implementation derived from the original NTP project.
 .
...

This contacts about 21 servers in the wild

finally  I installed openntpd, which accepted the setting of listening to the local router fritz!box.
which is exactly one hop away.

ntpctl -s peers

This whole idea of unveiling the existence of all the internal hardware by each one for himself contacting is b?llsh?t

Yes that was the solution.
It is not enough to install the package(s), debian wants you to do this

a2enmod cgi

by hand, also that it could as well be in a post install script.

as programmed, swish++ should be a package requirement, not a recommendation.

almost solved. Bug or feature ?

Hi

devuan daedalus

Yesterday i installed dwww. Today I looked, if indexes have been built, but have not.
I run /etc/cron.daily/dwww, it quit immediately.

I run /etc/cron.weekly/dwww,

/etc/cron.weekly (git)-[master] # sh -x -v dwww

It asked if swish++ was installed and quit. Of course swish++  was not installed, because it was a recommendation only.
Now I installed swish++, now it builds the index.

Debian Documentation is flawed and dependencies are also flawed both on the website and in the installation.

now there is one simple thing missing :
a script which does all the above in a single call.
There are people, who write extensive lists of how to do one thing after the other and have tested them .
But then instead of pouring this in a single script. they are wasting a million times of users to not save them their time.

What are computers for, if not to automatize and transfer this knowledge.

and of course the script shall be in the appropriate package.

That would be progress.
