#201 Re: Installation » Remove Python from Devuan/Refracta? » 2020-02-23 08:38:33

If you have packages that are dependent on versions of python2 - 3 probably not a good idea.

Im pretty sure software versions of various packages in ascii would depend on python2. Im running void linux and it only has python3 version installed, but that system was built from a base install and i knew what packages i wanted and python2 was not one of them nor will it be going forward. Bleeding edge distros seem to stay current with what works and will not work in the future, so if python2 packages have not been ported to python3 yet thenthey will either break or remain deprecated until someone takes up the challenge to port them, case in point would be network manager wicd.

Im from Australia, so if battery world deliver to you then yes.

With a name like battery world you might think they would deliver worldwide, i havent checked this though.

See for yourself

I get mine locally not online. Surely you have a battery shop somewhere that deals in only batteries, the shop i go to is called battery world, it covers just about every conceivable battery you would want apart from a tesla.

#205 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » i3 window manager: mod4 (win key) doesn't work » 2020-02-19 08:02:11

I dont know much about i3 but below command should swap your meta key from left Alt to left Super or Win key. If you want this behaviour and it works you need to put it in your autostart file so it saves the configuration over reboots and logouts etc.

setxkbmap -option altwin:swap_alt_win

The below command will unset above command and set your keybinds back to what they were originally.

setxkbmap -option

If you are using xfce4 and the i3 window manager together and not using xfwm then you need to figure out why i3wm is not taking the settings.

what are your configurations,

1. xfce4 - i3wm session
2. xfce4 - xfwm session
3.standalone i3 session no desktop

#206 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » i3 window manager: mod4 (win key) doesn't work » 2020-02-18 09:27:10

sorry i should have read your opening post better, looks like you have looked into xmodmap. I think i meant to say setxkbmap

what does doing this command give you?

setxkbmap -option altwin:swap_alt_win

if this works for you, put it in your autostart file.

to restore the default behaviour do...

setxkbmap -option

Besides those links show they have abandoned all such efforts in porting bsd's so the point is rather moot. Hypothetically, if a team of talented devs were to undertake such an endeavor then this might not be a moot point.

You do understand that is a purely optional feature[1], right? It only makes sense for laptops and it won't be the default. And it's actually rather useful, if you read the posts about it earlier in the thread.

[1] Like most of systemd's tools.

Don't call those features optional. They are pure EEE. SystemD is not GNU/Linux - it's svchost.exe. Home directories in svchost.exe-like service is the greatest insanity achieved recently.

More like launchd by apple.

Nope!

In your words: Debian is missing the point of Debian!

Debian aimed at being the Universal Operating System providing a similar userland on different architectures and even kernels. Debian/Hurd and Debian/kFreeBSD seem to be the last  remembered survivors of this goal now barely living in some intensive care units somewhere in a hidden ivory tower.

So porting a De??an sibling to e.g. the NetBSD kernel, just would revive the old dreams.

Ok fair enough i see what you mean, maybe what I should say is it might not make much sense in the way hyperbola is switching over to openbsd as the base and to do something similar with debian and devuan (just focusing on rebasing devuan on a certain bsd and dropping support for linux).  As i understand it, hyperbola will phase out linux in the future, not something debian or devuan would be doing being a universal operating system. Besides those links show they have abandoned all such efforts in porting bsd's so the point is rather moot. Hypothetically, if a team of talented devs were to undertake such an endeavor then this might not be a moot point.

I believe re-basing Devuan on any bsd, whether it be netbsd or openbsd etc would be missing the point of Devuan entirely? Why would the developers waste so much of there time and effort getting devuan where it is now only to fork off into bsd territory? Makes no sense if you ask me.  If you want to use a bsd, use netbsd, openbsd etc etc.

#216 Re: Off-topic » HyperbolaBSD Roadmap relevance to Devuan » 2020-02-05 14:41:15

I think we are in for a long wait to see if hyperbola can pull this off, their road map to completion is a long way off yet and a lot can happen in the time frame they have set themselves.

As long as devuan is a fork of debian, re-basing Devuan on BSD derived kernel is not going to happen unless there are some folk out there who are able to do this. I dont speak for the devuan team i just see this question as too complex to undertake given the roadmap devuan is on.

Really nice website too, definitely  "kiss". When i get some better hardware i will definitely give this distro a try.

Maybe systemd is another OS inside linux thanks to systemctl or journalctl stuff but i am not sysadmin... :-(

SystemD means tons of problems for everyone. Maybe you don't see them now but they're in your system. Due to SystemD when something goes wrong you can't even understand where is the problem, so you can't fix it easily. It's not just about system administration itself. It's about reliability and control. When you have no control on your system it's definitely not a user-friendly situation.

If you like Arch you can try Artix Linux.

The only way ive found to fix systemd is to sudo wipefs --all /dev/sda and install devuan wink

Another question might be does your ISP/Carrier support tethering but charges for this service?

It might be a case of it being available but in order for it to work the carrier needs to turn it on, some ISP's are evil like that.

Yeah, the AUR is chock-full of malware and the Arch documentation advises to beware of -bin packages because they are opaque.

Anyway, panic over because the .deb won't even install in Devuan:

https://i.postimg.cc/njmjcGj8/Screenshot-from-2020-01-22-08-18-56.png

It uses systemd-networkd to connect...

So its a bit of a mindfield in AUR in relation to malware then. Bin files always remind me of that windows virus that is going around wink
