#126 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Keeping LMDE4 in Beowulf? » 2021-03-19 15:58:16

Been hacking LMDE for a while, check out minux lint ebian dedition on facebook wink

Started out just wanting to fit LMDE into less than 3GB for asus eeepc 4G, so was attracted to the single language, single driver netinstall of debian 8.10 with firmware to create a system with no desktop, then just sudo apt install synaptic mintmenu and virtually everything else is pulled in. It worked fine, might dig out an old version and try upgrading it.

Currently having second attempt at this nice new upgrade path. I don't generally record anything, preferring to think of myself as a gardener growing mint in a field of eee pc.

So far I have:
Installed cinnamon 2 lmde
Applied all updates
Cinnamon would not start
So have already installed lightdm, mate-session-manager, mate-control-center, mate-media.
Mate desktop here uses 80 to 120 MB idling, depending on if it's default config or all the easy stuff switched off.
Currently stripping out bloat, aiming for less than 1500 packages before first upgrade, will try to keep cinnamon desktop this time.

When I upgraded from LMDE 2 to 3, sysv was retained.
when I upgraded from LMDE3 to Beowulf (which went like a dream), systemd was removed.

In order to install systemd again, I need to remove elongind and install logind. Can I do this? Can I install systemd and get my old situation back, dual boot with systemd?

#128 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Why I have to have a desktop and hope I am wrong. » 2021-03-19 10:36:22

More findings:
MOC running on devan without desktop is effectively gapless, but forgets networked audio output setting on reboot.
MOC running on Antix without desktop is gappy, but remembers networked audio output setting. For some reason antix pulsaudio has standard 0 nice while it is nice of -11 on other systems, so presumably renicing pulse in Antix could fix this. Unless, of course, that breaks antix.

I take it you've seen this article already?

Never seen it, but he seems to have had a rather difficult time of it, compared to my recent experiences

I start with LMDE2 cinnamon to get the dual boot to begin with, then hold sysvinit-core so it is not removed, then upgrade to LMDE3 cinnamon, which is when I remove cinnamon and install mate desktop, install cmatrix and mate-menu and put these, along with gnome-system-monitor, on hold, because later versions meh.

Upgrading to LMDE4 just removes sysv or refuses to upgrade if not.
So I followed this - https://www.devuan.org/os/documentation … owulf.html
However, sysvinit was already process 1 for me so no need for reboot, and I'd already downloaded all packages needed to reinstall networking graphical laziness.

Just one

apt-get upgrade

did the entire migration for me, I was on Beowulf mint within an hour! Systemd was removed. The sound settings bug from Beowulf was not present in this one, and it also, as a bonus, remembered networked output audio setting too! A bit of tinkering got memory use down to around 110MB idle, going up to 170MB with all desktop bells and whistles required for minimal comfort, laziness, and eye candy.

After the upgrade, added the LMDE4 debbie repo and checked - all mint apps can be installed but mintmirrors and mintsources need to be reworked to not break things. Mintsystem seems to need systemd, as does parts of mintreport. Oh, mintwelcome isn't happy either but who needs it?
I'm going to do this setup again on another machine, and be more experimental i.e attempt to reinstall systemd and keep sysvinit. Systemd wants to remove elogind first. Does devuan  still work with logind and udev?

Can you not just reinstall sysvinit-core after upgrading? How about runit-init?

I started but it wanted to punish me by removing lots of stuff so I left it for now, but there is a better way, I have been busy,
Plus, I wanted to retain the situation I had - sysvinit boot on 0, and on "1>1" booted to systemd without lightdm.

Installing sysvinit-core on LMDE4 or Debian 10  results in removal of systemd.

I have, however, managed to hack it again... watch this space...

#131 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » PulseAudio always resets to mute » 2021-03-12 16:19:36

More news, Spent all day installing antix. Same versions of sysv, pulse, mate-media as Beowulf.

Antix seems to do better than all the others. Not only does it save hardware profiles (the Beowulf Bug), it also saves your output choices even if they are on a networked device.

Somewhere under the hood of antix lies the answer perhaps? If would be great to be better than debian and lmde at doing pulseaudio with mate-media settings persistence.

Antix is interesting, but I'd still rather have devuan.

#132 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » PulseAudio always resets to mute » 2021-03-12 09:48:11

Hi again, I've found two things from playing with the default.pa file

Firstly, no configuration allows one to save a user preference for a network sink. RTP multicast is retainable, like local sound cards, but not even my precious lmde saves a network card.

Secondly, default.pa has nothing to do with hardware profile. This is just good old fashioned not being saved.
Is it the case that mate have stopped supporting sysv? Can't reproduce the problem under any systemd system, or under an older sysv system.

#133 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate? » 2021-03-11 11:57:02

I found a clue. This problem is also in debian but, wait for it...

I did a netinstall of the latest kali. Select and install software was broken so went ahead anyway. Added light mate desktop

Stunned to see that it happily retains your user defined backgrounds across reboots.

Question? Which package or procedure provides the magic where you get your special home folders generated? I seem to keep doing net installs and not getting a proper home directory

#134 Re: Freedom Hacks » Keeping sysvinit in LMDE3 :) » 2021-02-24 18:10:51

Thankyou, I got the email address but have been so far unable to successfully report the bug, rejected via email, and via reportbug, it runs through to the end and I confirm to send but I have seen and heard nothing.
Likewise, emailing owner@devuan.org gets no reply sad

Wasn't successful keeping sysv into LMDE4, will try again.

#135 Re: Freedom Hacks » Keeping sysvinit in LMDE3 :) » 2021-02-22 10:27:21

HI, slightly, I just need the address, not the whole server getup, like there used to be in the 90s, I just want an email address that I can dump if it gets spammed, for public forum use

Yes, I'm moving over to Devuan because debian and lmde have gone all systemd, and versions 3 and 4 of LMDE will remove sysvinit during upgrade if allowed.
Having accidentally once upgraded from LMDE2 to LMDE3, managing to keep the choice of two inits, set about this weekend nailing it down. It seems the trick is:

 apt-mark hold sysvinit-core

This keeps it installed. Next experiment is to see if this works in upgrading to LMDE4 too.
In the meantime, trying to figure out how to report the one bug that is stopping me using Devuan. Which is the best free webmail?

#137 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Gnome flashback session failed to launch. » 2021-02-18 10:24:31

I thought segfaults were consigned to history, windows, and silliness?

The last time I saw one was when I used dd to take an image of the system, while live (i.e. dding itself)
Then, while still live, dd that copy back over itself.

Then reboot. Everything looks fine, but every command returned * segfault *

This is really why you should not dd anything that is mounted, and certainly not anything live, unless criminal hacking, of course.

Asus 701.
630mhz celeron M, single core.
512mb ram
Max 30mb/s read speed off disk, more like 1mb/s for random small read/write

The gaps feel like the music stops for a very brief time before continuing. It's not right!

I typed it exactly as it is there.

My comment was copied and pasted from your example.

In just pasted it into terminal on this my lmde3 main machine, and, wait, a package-list appeared in /home..

So I figured maybe I needed a desktop so I went on another getty and did a startx and had no kb or mouse so now I am stuck with avril lavign looping in moc until the battery dies

,,,sorry for the delay, that list is coming...

OK, so I needed to install awk-original, and had missed the  |  (what do you call the upright bar?)

#142 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate? » 2021-02-17 16:13:00

for dpkg -l | awk '/^ii/ { print $2 " " $3 }' > pkglist-debian

I get:

dpkg-query: no packages found matching /^ii/ { print $2 " " $3 }

what did I do wrong?

update: am using runit on the 3.1 problem box, sysvinit on the no-problem upgraded box

Oh, to reproduce, you need to change to a different picture, then see if it persists. It will always persist if it's your current background and the file is present, so far...

Just added a picture from my home folder as background: survives changing the background and a reboot.

Problem is in fresh 3.1 install.

I upgraded a 3.0 to 3.1 in the past hour, no sign of this bug so maybe needs a fresh install to reproduce? I've only seen it on my current lightweight mate / netinstall on a 4gb ssd eee pc. No immediate plans to install it on another machine but curiosity builds

Debian mate is fine, LMDE 2,3 or 4 with mate de all fine, ascii is fine, 3.0 is fine, and now 3.0 upgraded to 3.1 is fine.

Myself and at least one other have noted that certain sound settings do not persist in 3.0 or 3.1, where they do in ascii or debian.

Further to this, I note that backgrounds added by the user are lost in 3.1   This is not a problem in 2.0 or 3.1

Can anyone confirm this on 64 bit please? Just add a background from your pictures folder, then choose a different background, does it loose the one you just added?

This is happening on mate desktop. Is it happening on other de?

Ok, so my job for today is to grab a spare eee pc, Beowulf3.1 netinst, decline all tasksel.
Install audacious then run audacious -H and I can make playlist from sd card there and then?

@andyprough I've tried a few players which claimed gapless but didn't do it properly, if a new one hasn't been written recently then there most likely isn't one. Surely a cli mode for deadbeef or audacious needs to happen?

Moc works for me, just use by command mocp

Do you have a very fast machine? Perhaps your gaps are very small but I assure you, they are there!
