I had the idea that all terminals supported the -T parameter used to set the window title. It has come to my attention that sakura does not. Instead it uses lowercase -t as the parameter.
Is sakura alone in this behavior or are there other terminal emulators that use a different parameter, or don’t even support setting the title.
This is an important issue since this incompatibility could easily break programs and scripts with terminals that do not support it.
Nice! It always makes me happy to see JWMKit used in a project.
Where do I report issues? (along with possible fixes)
9wm, cwm, dwm, evilwm, flwm, lwm and windowlab . . . .
I was wondering if anyone here had tried any of those and liked them.
It seems the tread has spiraled away from the question. I have tried all of these in the past, but it's been awhile. From my experience I have to agree with @Camtaf . Not only are the listed WMs very basic, they fail to be take the crown for being lightweight. In opinion you can't beat JWM. I've not seen any WM as lightweight, but when configured properly is very nice.
When I configured for pipewire all I did was install pipewire-media-session
That's the magic that worked for me. it conflicts with wireplumber so it will be uninstalled.
Then I added /usr/bin/pipewire and /usr/bin/pipewire-media-session to my startup
It works fine for me. Maybe it will work for you.
I think it's a wonderful changes. To many people were quoting giant walls of text. Many including multiple previous quotes.
Doing it manually is simple enough. I had a habit of using the quote button and then trimming it down to the key part, but its easy to adapt.
We are assuming he want to compile the newest version just so he can have the newest version. We don't really know if that is the case.
Sometimes a user has specific reasons to use an unstable version. For example I quite often build JWM from the master branch in order to keep up with new features and other changes. This is not because I want the newest version. It is so I can become familiar with the new version in order to implement the new changes into JWMKit. If JWM has a new feature I want to support it in my software. I need to experience it first hand, and I also need to test JWMKit with it. If I wait for a new stable to be release it slows me down on supporting those changes in JWMKit.
I'm glad you figured it out!
Not gonna happen.. It's gotta be JWM.. I've tried Ratpoison, Awsome, and other tiling window managers. I just don't like them. The keyboard.control is great, but I feel restricted with them. I quite often overlap windows were I can only see the desired part of the windows. So I need a WM that allows for overlapping windows.
I do admit that Ratpoison is good software. So we can agree on that. Someone needs to be using it. Just not me. Here's something we can agree on. I take JWM, and you take Ratpoison.
Just don't expect me to agree with everything, that's all
The day we all agree will be a boring day
@aluma concerning the double entries on Firefox. I like having two entries. Because when I mistype a url in the url entry I want it to fail to load the page, not do a search result. I know that is not what most people want, but it is for me. As was just stated, it's about choice. Why they don't offer a similar feature for the single entry is a puzzle to me. They really should.
I am in agreement that It doesn't bother me which search engine some one uses. But it doesn't hurt to discuss it. Who is forcing anyone? I guess we can't discuss the pros, cons, or preferences of a search engine because someone is going to relate discussion to being forced.
I miss a button in browsers that would allow me to select a search engine with one click.
Its not the default, but you can configure Firefox to have both a URL bar and a search bar. The search bar has a drop down menu that lets you select the search engine you want to search with. You can also add other sites to search and it's not limited to search engines. For example Youtube, translate, maps, etc.
The reason I use google is not because I agree with their practices, but because their search engine is technologically the best among the competitors
I strongly disagree. When I use duckduckgo I get much relatable results. It is so obvious that google's search results are manipulated and filtered. Maybe you would prefer this over the raw results, but no thank you.
But Win7(8) still loads faster.
Does it? or is it just that windows lies and hibernates when you tell it to shutdown. Compare the boot time from a real cold start. You probably already know this, but holding down the shift key when you press shutdown will shut down windows for real.
The edit version should suggest that adult like behavior is expected, even if you aren't an adult.
Don't know if it will help, but have you tried updating the font cache
fc-cache -fv
Yes the issue with the time templates was a silly mistake. It shows the difference a single character can make when coding. in this case it was matter of lowercase vs uppercase.
For those who don't know what we are talking about. The suggested templates for the tray clock used months instead of minutes. This meant the minutes were only correct once per hour as they only change once a day. An embarrassing mistake, but one that was easy to make.
New release of JWMKit. You can download the deb package here.
20231223 Merry Christmas
Support for new JWM features and a few necessary fixes - mostly things broken by Debian 12.

Bugfix - Tray clock templates used month instead of minutes
While I agree it's a problem the truth is it still comes back to individual choices. Just because you live in the US doesn't mean your diet has to consist of Oreos, and pizza rolls. Quality food is available in the fresh produce section. You can also find quality meat, but you have to skim through the junk. Not to mention that you always have the option of growing your own fruits and veggies, and It's not like the many US Gun owners can't hunt for fresh meat. In fact many do. Many people even go as far as raising their own beef (and milk), chicken (and eggs), etc. Remember the US is huge which means lots of land.
I believe the main concern of the US food market is the fake health food. Every thing in the US is package to promote itself as being healthy. Just use some common sense.. For example candy that says "Fat Free". Yeah, it's fat free, but it's loaded with sugar. Or Fatty food's claiming to be sugar or carb free. Yeah, but it's loaded with fat.
It's hard to avoid GTK3. My compromise is that I use GTK3, but in order to trim the system I cut out other graphical tool kits like GTK2, and QT.
Even for programing my own software I use the GTK3. I did not want to use GTK2 and then have distros pull support for GTK2
I get that login managers are "pretty" but does the appearance really serve any purpose? How much time do you spend interacting with your login screen and what has it done for you lately ?
As far as display managers. I agree that it's something you can do without, and is mostly just polish. With that said you can't ignore the various features that a display manager provides. For example the able to power off or restart without having to login, and don't forget auto-login. Not really killer features, but I'm sure their are those who greatly appreciate such features and use them every day. If I'm creating an Live Linux ISO to be used by others I'm going to provide a display manager.
My problem with display managers is that there just are not any good ones. They either pull in a crazy number of depends.or are so basic is not much better then just using the console. Yes slim is simple but why do I do a need the root password to shutdown the system on a system that's configured to shutdown without a password?
@The-Amnesiac-Philosopher. I didn't take your comment the wrong way. When read carefully I don't think we contradicted each other in anyway. I just wanted to expand on it by add on what you didn't say.
Just looked at my .xsession-errors and it's 112.2MB
IT only takes up storage space, so it doesn't really affect system performance. Of course it becomes a pain when it's necessary to actually read the file. Using tools like tail that outputs only part of the file helps with that.
For those complaining that jwm doesn't have an automatic menu. You can use JWMKit, and those who don't want the whole kit I have stand-alone versions of jwmkit_easymenu - the tool that generates the menu. A python version and a bash version. The bash version is simpler (and no depends) while the python version has more advanced options.
You can fine them in my EXTRAS repository. Which is just a collection of various things related to JWM or JWMKit.
Yes we all have our own preferences. We also have the right to express them, even if it's different from someone else. In fact in those case we or other might learn because we were exposed to another's way of thinking.
I'm glad to hear how others configure their systems even if it's something I don't like. It give me the chance to possibly learn something new.
Mirage is great. I like Viewnior, but it is GTK2. It makes no sense to have GTK2 install for just a single app. That's why I use Mirage instead.
As far as file managers go. I consider them very useful. The whole reason I want a lightweight system is so I can work faster. A file manager may use resources, but it also increase productivity.
I never did understand why xcalc was ignored. I always use it. I think it's more about every DE having to promote themselves.
xedit just seems awkward to me.I'd rather just use nano in an terminal window. It needs some love. Put the buttons in a more natural order, and give it a better way to load files. There are so many good lightweight editors out there I'll just install one of them.
I use spacefm as a file manager. I just like it better than pcmanfm, not to mention it has a better name.
magicpoint. I'm not familiar with it. How have I missed this.
I couldn't agree with you more about JWM. It is the star of the show for a lightweight system.
GHOTI spells 'fish' in English exceptionalism; gh as in "enough", o as in "women", ti as in "action"...
That's the explanation for the name of the 1990s punk rock band "Ghoti Hook"
@jwmkit what about cpu resources for jwmkit on daedalus vs chimaera
Wow!, I don't know how I missed your post. It's been more than a month. I hope you didn't think I was ignoring you. Sorry.
I understand the concern of CPU usage. Not only for performance, but battery life. I did not compare CPU usage of Daedalus with previous releases. Although I always keep an eye on HTOP,, and I can tell you CPU usage seemed pretty low, and I don't think it should be a concern.
Of course CPU usage is just like RAM usage. Any noticeable difference is usually the result of additional services and software you install/configure.
