Hi,
reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … le_options
I try to prevent random "card" index changes at boot. Arch wiki says to use
$ cat /proc/asound/modules
to get the loaded sound modules and their order, then disable modules that we do not use to prevent their use.
However on my system I get two snd_hda_intel :
0 snd_hda_intel
1 snd_hda_intel
2 snd_usb_audio
Yesterday I get
0 snd_hda_intel
1 snd_usb_audio
2 snd_hda_intel
I already tried two disable snd_usb_audio, however I can't disable snd_hda_intel as it would disable both (disabling is done with module name).
I run out of ideas, it is very frustrating. I try to "resist" installing pulseaudio, however if I can't solve this issue I afraid I have to
yes all back and it wants to remove python if I do a full-upgrade (i' am on testing/chimaera)
Well, there are sometimes strange apt behaviors for me :
apt install --install-recommends wine32
installed back all removed packages except the two libsystemd0 packages, with no interference with virt-manager.
but trying to install libsystemd0 again removes wine32 ... If I have to choose between libssystemd0 and wine32 I will keep wine32
The strange thing is xserver-xorg-core has a direct dependency with libsystemd0.
I use testing/chimaera. Perhaps it is ok in Ceres, so I will wait a few days/week to see if it changes in testing.
Hi,
I want to try something else as Virtualbox and I decided to try qemu/KVM that I never used with virt-manager (as i'm lazy and just and end-user I do not want to manage VM with the command line) so:
sudo apt install --install-recommends libvirt-daemon-system
sudo adduser thierrybo libvirt
reboot
sudo virsh list --all
Id Name State
--------------------
Fine.
Now virt-manager :
apt -s install --install-recommends virt-manager
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

What bother me is the removing of this packages :
libsystemd0 libsystemd0:i386 libwine:i386 wine32:i386
libsystemd0 is required by many packages and I don't want to remove wine32 at all from my system (breaks steam I guess). I really don't understand why it is required to remove them. Is there any body that installed both virt-manager and wine/win32?
My system :
inxi -S
System: Host: thierrybo-desk Kernel: 5.7.0-2-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Openbox 3.6.1
Distro: Devuan GNU/Linux 4 (chimaera/ceres)
and I don't install consolekit, policykit-1, elogind nor a Display Manager.
multios wrote:I assume you are using ceres.
Erm, no. I'm using Alpine Linux at the moment because I prefer a more minimal system.
multios wrote:I ran Debian Sid and enjoyed it, even with the occasional problem
I used to run sid (briefly) and any problems were usually fixed pretty quickly by package updates. The problem with testing is the mandatory transition delay from unstable which means that if anything is broken then it can stay broken for a while.
I didn't think about that with Devuan. Does this mean with Devuan testing we suffer twice the freeze delay? The first one when debian testing freeze, then the second one when Devuan freezes its testing?
Ok thanks, i will change to 'chimaera' codename.
Hi,
After several years using only Debian stable and then Devuan stable, I recently upgraded my computer to Devuan testing/chimaera. I use "testing" in my source.list and not "chimaera".
My stupid question: packages are pulled from Debian testing/bullseye. Knowing that Devuan follows Debian releases 6 to 12 months later, which codename packages will be pulled from after Debian Bullseye become stable and before Devuan Chimaera become stable when using "testing" in source.list? Debian Bullseye or Debian Bookworm?
Nevermind. I It seems removing some of my /etc/apt/preferences.d/ files solved the problem.
Hi,
first I believed something went wrong during Beowulf to testing migration because the process removed all i386 packages and and i am now unable to install any i386 package :
sudo apt install wine32
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package wine32:i386 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
libwine:i386 libwine
E: Package 'wine32:i386' has no installation candidate
any i386 package "has no installation candidate"
I tried to remove and add i386 architecture :
sudo apt-get purge ".*:i386"
sudo dpkg --remove-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
but nothing changed.
Then I installed a fresh Beowulf Virtualbox machine. I added i386 achitecture, then installed wine and wine32.
I migrated to testing. wine32 still work.
But then I tried to remove and add i386 architecture with the same commands as above, and guess what? I also can't install any i386 package with the same
E: Package 'xxxxxxxxxx:i386' has no installation candidate
message.
I bumped in a slightly different message (testing/Chimaera) :
sudo apt install wine32
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package wine32:i386 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

However the following packages replace it:
libwine:i386 libwine
E: Package 'wine32:i386' has no installation candidate
solved with https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=11331#p11331
# apt-get clean
# rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
# apt-get update
I am on ascii an try to upgrade to beowulf today and I have the same error for all i386 and some amd64, euther with ascii or beowulf source.list :

Hi roluan17,
I'm from Germany also. I have dropped all tries to add a country code or a specific mirror. I simply use:
deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged ascii main contrib non-free deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-security main contrib non-free deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-updates main contrib non-free deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-backports main contrib non-free
This works fine.
Regards, rolfie

Maybe just pining by origin is sufficient:

Hi,
as I well understand it since 2 years I use Devuan as my main distro, Devuan is not exactly a "normal" distribution where you can submit packages proposals. For me this distro single goal is to remove systemd form Debian. So the best way IMHO is to submit it to Debian.
H_o_a_S .. thanks for the clarification . I am not sure if Firefox 60 ESR would still work with alsa-only, but 52 probably does. Tried apulse (for firefox and skype if i remember correctly) but i didn't seem a stable solution.
Anyway, i am still using FF52.9 ESR because some extensions i rely on are no more compatible with the newer versions of FF.
I use Devuan without PA and Firefox with apulse for 2 years now and I didn't have any issue.

well it is just changing from the speakers to an usb headset.
thierrybo, I use alsamixer in xterm and it has the ability to change sound cards on the fly, at least i think that is what below commands do as i dont have another sound device i could check it on. I know its not gui but its just as good.
xterm -e alsamixer
then press F6 to select sound card
You are lucky that F6 works for you, because for me it is only used to select the card you want to edit controls. It does not change the currently used sound device.
I also removed pulseaudio and admittedly only an advanced user/geek will do that. Having to edit a text file using a root account to be able to change output device is not something you can use for average linux user.
I wonder why this is so difficult for a developer to write a gui for alsa with on the fly device change like pavucontrol does. I tried alsamixer, alsamixergui and gnomealasamixer, none does that.
However to ease things I do not use /etc/asound.conf or /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf, but ~/.asoundrc to not have to use root access each time I want to switch between my speakers or my headset.
