It's not that long ago that I was using a modem, just about 7 years ago in fact, & I'm in the UK. So, whilst you may think it superflous, others may not.
Some countries, I believe have very poor internet structure, & a modem may be their only means of connecting.
(Also, don't some admins still use a modem to connect to their servers?)
It's a cancer spreading throughout Linuxland, unfortunately.
Unfortunately, systemd is like a cancer, it just grows & grows, & takes over its host, until it kills it - need to keep abreast of what the BSD's are up to.
NB: This is written 'tongue in cheek'.
I only mentioned it, because when I checked, I was running that version of xserver-xorg-core.
I'm beginning to think my problem is FF related, as it doesn't always happen, & not at/in the same time frame after starting.
May have been just a coincidence it happening when others were getting freezes on their machines.
Edit: Another coincidence is the fact that I had just installed both Devuan & Vuu-Do to my actual hardware.
Welcome aboard.
It is an old kernel, as old as Debian's, but it has all the patches added, there is a new release about to come.
You may want to try out the distro now, then upgrade when we get our new release.
Devuan, has been playing catch up whilst removing systemd, but things are well under way on the next release.
Devuan & AntiX are about the same in that regard.
(AntiX is more like Vuu-Do, but with a few more programs, it has a light version & another that has more programs.)
(MX is more like Refracta in that it is a full distro)
Edit: I'm beginning to prefer Vuu-Do, (or MIYO), even over AntiX because they leave more choices to me.
....& the competition is hotting up.....
Vuu-Do has got conky.....
....... & now MIYO has got desktop icons.....
what will we see next, folks....
Nice, short & to the point article.
(You might want to add AntiX to your no systemd blog.)
Forgot to mention, most of my freezes were on laptops, using the touchpads, however, it did happen on my desktop, but that seems to be OK now.
Yesterday, I added a battery state monitor to conky on my Vuu-Do installs, today, I didn't get a freeze - go figure.......
Likely this is why I've been getting freezes when online, Firefox, after several quick changes of websites!
It is in Devuan when you install & upgrade - maybe we shouldn't upgrade - just stay with the 'live' install as is, likewise I upgraded Vuu-Do, & it happens on it too.
xserver-xorg-core/unknown,now 2:1.16.4-1+deb8u1+b1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
Edit: I'm not sure what is on the original distros.
Edit2: My mouse does come back after several minutes, or at least, it feels like it.
Cheers, fungus - the red lines going through the middle of that top one messes with my eyes.
All I saw was.....
502 Bad Gateway
I haven't read it, but you might want to.
Good to know things are being kept an eye on, there was a bit of downtime a few days ago, which I just put down to maintenance, but everything came back up working as normal, so thanks to all involved. Loving this project, much more responsive to users than Debian ever was.
On-line sources will likely be more up to date.
I like using a WM - but most computer users want a DE - & as XFCE is the lightest, that is why it often gets used.
I think the main devs are the same devs who are working on getting the next release of Devuan ready, so, obviously, they can't do both at the same time.
Likely needs firmware to use it, check to see what modules are being loaded, maybe non-free &/or not included in Devuan by default, if so try using a copy of it from the one that works.
- awk, sed, vi, & mc are for us old time Linux/BSD users - these newbies don't know what they're about.
I believe pulseaudio uses pavcontrol to adjust sound levels
Having a US keyboard is a nuisance for us Brits, but not insurmountable, just have to poke around to see where keys have been put, most annoying are @ | ~ #
(If I need another layout, I use setxkbmap &/or loadkeys, usually works.)
Try typing "init freedom" (including the quotes) into Google.
Just type "against systemd" (include the quotes) into Google to get a good choice.
Try using mc, (a graphical command line file manager), in a terminal, & see if it takes as long, if not it may be your particular file manager, try a different one.
(I don't get any thrashing on any of my systems when moving or deleting, so may be something about your system setup.)
Use what suits you, that's what choice is about.
Personally, I don't want anything other than to get straight online with my wifi, a GUI, mp3 player, & a browser, even if it is only Dillo.
Quite a few experienced Linux users are of the same opinion, they want to start with a minimal usable system, & just add the programs that they want.
Having that option as a live distro just makes life so much easier.
If you want a full desktop environment with everything in it, just go for it & fill up your disk.
