There may be a translation error here, but “pride” is from a different story. The motivating force of the commandment “Thou shalt not steal” is precisely “pride,” the desire to preserve one’s reputation.

#52 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Auto login » 2024-06-29 06:15:09

It's not about Devuan, but about the chosen DE.
Full-featured ones (kde, tde, gnome, etc.) have settings for automatic configuration, passwordless login, permission to enter the root session, and other conveniences.

#53 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] CUPS and printer drivers » 2024-06-25 11:38:56

But you can forego the hplip part by installing CUPS and adding the local printer via the UI.

Will not work!
You need a driver and printer firmware that cups cannot install. It can only add a ready-to-use printer to the system.

But I won't argue. This is your computer and your decisions, although sometimes very exotic. smile

Regards.

#54 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] CUPS and printer drivers » 2024-06-25 05:46:58

@Altoid
I won't argue, I'll state it as I understand it.
The installation takes place in two stages - installing drivers so that the OS can not only “see” the device, but also control it and adding a printer.
For the first, you need the manufacturer's program, I used hplip, it itself downloads the plugin from the HP website and installs everything necessary.
There are several ways to add a printer, including hplip, but like you, I prefer cups.

Regards.

#55 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] CUPS and printer drivers » 2024-06-24 18:11:11

HP is phasing out Windows support for older printers, but continues to support them under Linux. The indestructible LaserJet 1005 works wonderfully for me.
As far as I understand the answers on two different sites, you don’t need to extract anything for your printer yourself, you need to run the install.sh script in the uld folder.

#56 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] ThinkPad, Qualcomm Gobi 2000 and SIM card. » 2024-06-24 11:26:08

If you need instructions, here's one for my laptop.
https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Qualcomm_Gobi_2000
The gobi-loader package is available in the Debian sid repository. Firmware files from the 7xwc48ww.exe installed on Windows from here
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds001302
Works the same in Devuan, OpenSuse 15.5 and bionicpup64-8.0.

#57 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] ThinkPad, Qualcomm Gobi 2000 and SIM card. » 2024-06-24 07:00:09

I'll mark it as solved, although I couldn't connect.
Everything works in software, interfaces appear, etc. As for the connection, I obviously need firmware for my operator. In addition, generations of mobile communications have changed and 3G may simply not be supported. I think it will be cheaper to buy a modern modem.

Then, I dropped her off at her parent's house.

How about a kiss? Forgot?

We were joking!
As usual, we slipped into “What should we eat?” Then we will scream “How to lose weight?”
Although, above, Uncle @golinuxs mentioned “imagination”, but did not reveal the topic of mushrooms.

I had a dream about sausage last night.
It was more like a nightmare to be frank.

Something is probably missing.
Or someone. smile

Seeing or eating sausage in a dream can represent sexual desires or a need for physical pleasure.

@Altoid
Thank you very much!
I’ll try, yes, “all by myself,” but what a process... smile

P.S. It looks like in my case the problem is in the SIM card, this is "sw disabled" in the nmcli output

cdc-wdm0: unavailable
        "cdc-wdm0"
gsm (qcserial, qmi_wwan), sw disabled, hw

I have a ThinkPad X201 laptop with a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 modem. The SIM card is inserted, the Firmware is loaded, a USB device

id 05c6:9205

appears as indicated here
https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Qualcomm_Gobi_2000
But then nothing happens; in the gui modem manager it says “unknown status.
Does anyone know what is missing?

You did it, respect!

But in my sad experience, if there is a possibility of an fatal error, it will certainly happen. smile
I already had an error in typing a command in the console and... trump-pump-pump, all over again.
Therefore, gparted live to prepare the disk, select commands, then, after checking, confirm execution.
But this is just my path.

#65 Re: Off-topic » The Crappiness of Modern Laptops » 2024-06-16 05:00:23

I can only judge by previous models.

The ancestor of your Lenovo Legion 5 -Y500, a gaming laptop, a not very comfortable touchpad with two buttons, a flimsy plastic case.

Lenovo ThinkPad X201 from the business series, 5 buttons on the touchpad, joystick, Kevlar case with excellent hinges, keyboard that can be watered from the top, there are drain holes at the bottom. A latch that secures the lid and must be pushed back with a finger.

Maybe it's all about purpose?

If you are playing games, then it is probably better to use a gamepad and the laptop itself will be in more gentle conditions.

#66 Re: Off-topic » Firefox is becoming too chrome like. » 2024-06-15 19:04:01

I discovered it recently, but judging by the requests, it happened a month ago - Firefox stopped supporting video calls on Facebook.
Although the FB website only talks about group calls, regular ones don’t work either.
A new round of “browser wars”. smile

When in a country a phone SIM card is only by passport, registration on the forum is only by phone number and one dictator for more than 20 years,  it’s time to console yourself with the freedom of ALSA

#68 Re: Freedom Hacks » the right procedure ? » 2024-06-13 05:02:59

@devur

но архива 'r6a038wc.default-esr/cache2/' больше не существует.

Just look at its contents after launch Firefox.
In RAM, the cache will be created when Firefox is launched in a new session and, naturally, will disappear when the computer is turned off. In addition, it improves browser performanceь and reduces the number of rewrites of SSD drives..

#69 Re: Freedom Hacks » the right procedure ? » 2024-06-12 10:38:59

If there is enough RAM (4 GB or more), the browser cache can be located in it.
Add a line to /etc/fstab like this

tmpfs /home/usre2/.cache/mozilla/firefox tmpfs nosuid,nodev,noatime,user,uid=1000 0 0

"uid=1000" - specify your user specifically.

#70 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Still Waiting at the Altar -- Daedalus 5.01 Full Install » 2024-06-11 06:43:45

Возможно, это работало с Chimaera и доступными там ядрами, но не с Daedalus и более поздними ядрами, потому что NVidea не поддерживает необходимые обновления, а только для совершенно нового ядра....

No, it's probably because Debian stopped supporting older video cards.
In OpenSuse 15.5 I can install nvidia driver packages versions 390 and 470 from the repository.

#71 Re: Off-topic » AI Safety » 2024-06-10 17:13:33

So much has been said about artificial intelligence! smile

The toilet tank also has “mind” and knows when to open and close the water. But it only has one logical cell. Then the question of technology is to pack the maximum number of cells into the permissible volume. The limit is probably only at the molecular level and it is foolish to hope that new opportunities will not be used.

But the most dangerous predator on the planet is man, and the question is only in the moral and ethical aspect. Alas, so far the whole world cannot stop one elderly dictator who wanted to play “soldiers”. Against this background, everything else simply does not matter.

Open the links and have a look.
And nvidia-detect works with errors, for my laptop with GeForce GT650M it was recommended by tesla.
Wiki may also be wrong, I would try..

#73 Re: Installation » xserver-xorg-video-* unused packages » 2024-06-10 11:34:13

I used the (now unsupported) Nvidia drivers...

Debian 12 "Bookworm", Version 525.105.17, supported devices Quadro FX 580.

I, like the topicstarter, try to avoid cli, and use mc when unavoidable. It's essentially a GUI for bash commands. That's why I advised it.

@FAipLLC-Andrew

I tried to do it through m c but could never get it to open.

1. The only place where you can get information about the reason for the failure is the log files. Then maybe someone will be able to give advice on how to fix this. There is no other way. smile

2. The permissions on /var/log/Xorg.0.log on my Daedalus machine allow the user to view it. You may need root rights to do this. You can open another window (ctl-alt-F2), log in as root, run mc and look at the logs by pressing F3 in the mc menu.

3.If you haven't already, try the Daedalus live image with Xfce.
https://mirror.leaseweb.com/devuan/devu … p-live.iso
It worked for me without problems on different machines, at least you can check the work without installation.
