Some thoughts from my end:

inxi, hwinfo and lshw are not part of a default installation, you need to install them if you want to have them available.

Just came across some article that was mentioning strange router setups that only talk to a single PC with a defined MAC address, all others are ignored. What are the leds on the NIC doing after power on? What type and brand is your router? How is it setup?

Interesting: you are running a 686 kernel on a computer that should support amd64. What is the reason for that choice?

Don't think that is causing the issue, but it may mean that its advisable to re-install the PC with an amd64 iso for optimum performance.

It also would make sense to show us the dmesg or syslog outputs related to the network adapter.

I was about to ask you to run an apt update/upgrade as next action and try to load a backports kernel. Won't work that easily without network.

Attention, the 5850U is a mobile CPU, while a 5700G is a CPU for a normal mainboard. The mobile is very rare on the retail market, mostly available only in laptops.

What is your goal, a mobile system or a standard desktop?

Instead of using Samba, can the NAS be connected via nfs? This is native Linux, and not a diversion via a Windows related feature.

With efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro 0 0 in the fstab I am also getting a boot error, copy from the bootlog:

No trace of this message in syslog and dmesg. messages just shows information from Nov 23rd the day I installed Daedalus on this machine. Same behaviour as on my laptop.

Looks like despite the error the remount to ro worked, and also switching back to rw.

Maybe there is a mismatch between messages and what is happening under the hood. My machines are not haunted, I guess we are coming closer to the root cause.

On my X570/Ryzen9/6700XT system I have added none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro 0 0 to the fstab, no errors during boot.

I'll change the fstab entry the one I used for Chimaera using efivarfs as label. Will post the results after reboot.

@Ralph: thank you, your explanation makes sense, tried it and it works. The error during boot is gone.

Summary:
* Let mountkernfs.sh attach the efivars.
* To change the efivarfs to ro, specify in the fstab none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro 0 0
* If you need to modify anything in the efi settings, remount rw with mount -t efivarfs -o remount,rw none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

Ok, gave that option a try.  /etc/default/grub was changed to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet noefi"

and the efivars line in the fstab commented out. I guess the option does what is suppoed to happen:

dmesg stops after about 25s past boot. messages is no more updated for some reason, what I see there are files from about 2 months ago. And syslog is not showing any mount related stuff.

Opening the terminal and the log viewer is documented, but not any messages related to the two failed mount calls.

Can this kind of behaviour point into the direction of a serious bug?

Well, the approach with setting the efivars to ro via fstab does no more work. Adding the noefi as kernel parameter does work with the downside that I can't read the boot settings in efivars easily any more. Thats why I would prefer the ro variant.

Thanks, interesting read. But thats not what I am after. The remount with the full blown command in the root terminal works. I am trying to make a ro remount work from fstab.

The last resort would be a script at reboot in the crontab doing the ro remount. My prime goal is to make it work via fstab.

Well, the full specification works.

Too bad that I didn't try that. I was much too much focussed on my interpretation of the man page that specifying just the mount point on a remount should do the job. The encouraging thing is that the full spec on the console works.

The question is whats wrong with the fstab entry. I have tried ro alone, remount,ro and remount=ro, always the same message.

That is confusing. I also mount efivarfs read-only with an fstab line in my Alpine Linux system and it works just fine there. I don't suppose that helps you though.

Ok, after some digging I found mountkernfs.sh which contains these lines:

I think you might need to specify the filesystem type:

# mount -t efivarfs -o remount,ro /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

If that doesn't work then check dmesg, as suggested in the error.

Late reply: adding a noefi past the quiet in the /etc/default/grub seems to remove the quiet or invalidates the entry, in any case I am getting lots of out during boot. The efivars error remains as is. I have used:

Just want to make you aware that at least the German localisation in the netinstalls currently is broken.

Got a version dated May 23rd that still is fine. Just got an issue when trying to install with a mirror that the installation of the keyring doesn't progress due to waiting for user input thats not possible in the installer (at least I have no idea how to do that). Will try again without network connection. Trying to load Daedalus to fix this issue: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=5364

Also got a version dated Sep 12th and Nov 21st. German Umlauts are not correctly displayed in menus, many menues are broken, and I guess also the German Keyboard layout is not served correctly in the password dialogue. Shot some pictures with my camera if that helps.

Just upgraded my Ryzen 9/X570 system from a 5500XT to a 6700XT graphics card, and I must say I am disappointed about the performance. Not speed itself, now I am seeing drawing artifacts.

Basics: Chimaera, Cinnamon desktop, Lightdm, Chimaera backports kernel and latest amd firmware from same backports. inxi -F shows:

The artifacts are different depending on the application. Firefox and Tor browser seem to work alright, haven't seen any issues. In Evolution I got some square green blocks in the menu and black ones in the footer. In others I see a pattern of square black boxes. Text display in the system protocol viewer partially is getting scrambled mainly when scrolling back up, some coloured artifacts are also present. When I move the mouse out of the window and try to make a screenshot the contents seems to be re-drawn and the problems are gone.

Prepared this thread with the text editor. Square blocks half colored half white overwrite parts of the text in the line that being edited. Again when I call up the screen capture program the artifacts go away. Addtional effects: square blocks appear in the lower part of the window. When I wait some seconds the pattern changes.

In some games I could identify transparent blocks that instead of the window background show the desktop background (proven by moving the window on the screen). Anyhow, I can't show the artifacts by taking a screen capture, as soon as the mouse activates another window the screen seems to be redrawn correctly.

It is hard to re-produce the issues. I could easily create artifacts with the system protocol viewer this morning, now as I try to prepare my screen for taking a picture with my camera, the viewer seems to be working fine.

I have swapped the two display ports on the card, no real difference. A HDMI cable to test a different route reduces the resolution, but same type of issues.

What do I need to conclude from that behaviour? Is that a defective new card? Or a driver issue, i.e. is the HW not fully supported yet? Do I need to go up to Daedalus?

I know my description is vage. I will try to put together something with gimp from my pictures. This will take a while.

You will need to enable backports in your sources.list. Then you are able to install the latest kernel from backports on Chimaera. When you are sure its working fine you should consider installing linux-image-amd64 from backports to receive upgrades from there. Side effect: you won't get updates of the 5.10 line of kernels any more.

Isn't the error message explicit enough? You need to use the command like this:

# dpkg-reconfigure locales

This is useless:

Sure you can. You need network to be able to load sw from the web. That will also work in a chroot environment.

Or you load packages with a different computer to a flash drive and copy it to the system causing problems. Installation via dpkg -i.

On Beowulf and Chimaera the efivarfs seems not to be loaded automatically on my systems. To avoid issues with the kernel writing crash dumps into the efi flash bricking the MB, I am used to add this line to the fstab:

# To stop linux accessing the EFI variables
efivarfs  /sys/firmware/efi/efivars  efivarfs  ro  			0  0

I have installed Daedalus on my laptop now, and I am getting errors during boot saying (from bootlog):

Mounting local filesystems...mount: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: efivarfs already mounted or mount point busy.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

Well I tried with adding a remount before the ro:

# To stop linux accessing the EFI variables
efivarfs  /sys/firmware/efi/efivars  efivarfs  remount,ro  			0  0

and now I am getting a different error:

Mounting local filesystems...mount: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: mount point not mounted or bad option.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

In both cases dmesg does not show additional info.

Now I am stuck, whats wrong? The behaviour definitely is different
