On Beowulf and Chimaera the efivarfs seems not to be loaded automatically on my systems. To avoid issues with the kernel writing crash dumps into the efi flash bricking the MB, I am used to add this line to the fstab:

efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro 0 0
I have installed Daedalus on my laptop now, and I am getting errors during boot saying (from bootlog):
Mounting local filesystems...mount: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: efivarfs already mounted or mount point busy.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
Well I tried with adding a remount before the ro:
# To stop linux accessing the EFI variables
efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs remount,ro 0 0
and now I am getting a different error:
Mounting local filesystems...mount: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: mount point not mounted or bad option.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
In both cases dmesg does not show additional info.
Now I am stuck, whats wrong? The behaviour definitely is different

Check for enabled services, systemd likes to automount efivarfs rw so perhaps a sysvinit script has been added to do the same thing.
To disable access to UEFI NVRAM variables use the noefi kernel parameter.

Late reply: adding a noefi past the quiet in the /etc/default/grub seems to remove the quiet or invalidates the entry, in any case I am getting lots of out during boot. The efivars error remains as is. I have used:
"quiet,noefi"
Is that syntax correct?
I have no idea where to look for an init script that mounts the efivarfs. Anyhow, I think this is the desired option anyhow, I do not want to change that. I just want to revert the automatic mount into a read-only via fstab. And that does not work.
Strangely enough, when I try:
# mount -o remount,ro /sys/firmware/efi/efivars
mount: /sys/firmware/efi/efivars: mount point not mounted or bad option.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
While the efibootmgr is working and displays my settings, so the efivarfs must have been mounted.
Where is my mistake?

That is confusing. I also mount efivarfs read-only with an fstab line in my Alpine Linux system and it works just fine there. I don't suppose that helps you though.

I think you might need to specify the filesystem type:
# mount -t efivarfs -o remount,ro /sys/firmware/efi/efivars
If that doesn't work then check dmesg, as suggested in the error.

Ok, after some digging I found mountkernfs.sh which contains these lines:

In Daedalus this is working. In Chimaera to my experience efivars wasn't always started.
Edith: checked on Chimaera, this mount command isn't present in the same file on Chimaera.

Well, the full specification works.
Too bad that I didn't try that. I was much too much focussed on my interpretation of the man page that specifying just the mount point on a remount should do the job. The encouraging thing is that the full spec on the console works.
The question is whats wrong with the fstab entry. I have tried ro alone, remount,ro and remount=ro, always the same message.
# To stop linux accessing the EFI variables
efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs remount=ro 0 0

Changed back to the comma separated version. Still get the same error during boot, from the log:

Thanks, interesting read. But thats not what I am after. The remount with the full blown command in the root terminal works. I am trying to make a ro remount work from fstab.
The last resort would be a script at reboot in the crontab doing the ro remount. My prime goal is to make it work via fstab.

Here are the prerequisites, the "none" option tells the mount command that it is not a physical file system that is being mounted, but something like proc, etc.
This is covered in man mount(8), but I won't insist, distributions differ not only in the content of man.

For the record here is my working fstab line (Alpine Linux):
efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro,nosuid,nodev,noexec 0 0
Note that fs_spec is given as efivarfs but none can also be used (or indeed any identifier).

Ok, gave that option a try. /etc/default/grub was changed to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet noefi"
and the efivars line in the fstab commented out. I guess the option does what is suppoed to happen:

Opening the terminal and the log viewer is documented, but not any messages related to the two failed mount calls.
Can this kind of behaviour point into the direction of a serious bug?
Well, the approach with setting the efivars to ro via fstab does no more work. Adding the noefi as kernel parameter does work with the downside that I can't read the boot settings in efivars easily any more. Thats why I would prefer the ro variant.

It seems an fstab entry like
none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro 0 0
is fine.
Presumably because that mount is actually installed by mountkernfs.sh with the explicit label "none" but using the options as declared in fstab (if any), and the subsequent mounting by mount -a then ignores that fstab entry.
If you do want the label "efivarfs" then you'll need to touch up mountkernfs.sh accordingly.

* To change the efivarfs to ro, specify in the fstab none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro 0 0
* If you need to modify anything in the efi settings, remount rw with mount -t efivarfs -o remount,rw none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

I do see an error message about /sys/firmware/efi/efivars being already mounted so I presume that comes from mountkernfs.sh because the NVRAM variables are inaccessible but also re-mountable using the efivarfs identifier.

My system works with efivarfs as fs_spec under sysvinit, runit & openrc. It's using the daedalus kernel also. How bizarre.

On my X570/Ryzen9/6700XT system I have added none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro 0 0 to the fstab, no errors during boot.

Looks like despite the error the remount to ro worked, and also switching back to rw.
Maybe there is a mismatch between messages and what is happening under the hood. My machines are not haunted, I guess we are coming closer to the root cause.

The handling of efivarfs is different in chimaera and daedalus. I can only refer to sysvinit; other init choices may result in the same or different handling.
On daedalus, the fstab entry that is identified by the mount point /sys/firmware/efi/efivars is used 3 times by the initialisation scripting:
Firstly as an explicit "mount" by mountkernfs.sh with the name "none" but using the options of the fstab entry for /sys/firmware/efi/efivars if any,
Secondly as a "remount", also via mountkernfs.sh and in the name "none", but invoked by checkroot.sh, and
Thirdly as a "mount -a" by mountall.sh which uses all the elements of fstab, esp its name efivarfs.
It's the first use that establishes the mount unless fstab says remount, since that requires a pre-existing mount.
In that third use, "mount" is unhappy auto-mounting over a mount point with content. The actual mount command used is:
mount -t efivarfs -oro efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars
The previous mount stays unaffected.
However, a later remount command may refer to the mountpoint via the name in fstab even though that's not the name of the mount of that mountpoint. Thus, if you are so inclined, you might add several fstab lines like
writable /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs remount,rw,noauto 0 0
readonly /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs remount,ro,noauto 0 0
thursday /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs remount,rw,noauto 0 0
and with that enjoy your personal command language dealing with the /sys/firmware/efi/efivars mountpoint. E.g.
# mount writable ; grep efivars /proc/mounts
# mount readonly ; grep efivars /proc/mounts
Note that the name of the mount stays the same.
Afaik, chimaera is different in not mounting efivarfs by mountkernfs.sh and therefore some of this entertainment is not immediately available.

If you are using an rt kernel, none of this works. I've been struggling for 3 days now trying to get the kernel to boot efistub and couldn't figure out how in the world I was booting uefi but efivarfs wasn't mounting. I use the rt kernel due to using my system for playing guitar. Doing a diff on the kernel config files reveals that in the rt kernel, CONFIG_EFI_DISABLE_RUNTIME=y is set. Is there a reason for this in rt vs. default?

enabled, because measurements have shown that some EFI functions calls
might take too much time to complete, causing large latencies which is
an issue for Real-Time kernels.

I'd hack it! And test it on the machine (same hardware) and see if your system has any lockups.
It looks like a design flaw.
I wanted to run in real time for music (DAW) but could not use the graphics card memory or gpu because of the rt kernel and nVidia conflicts.
Sad really.
