Systemd is here to stay I think we all understand this.
For me the bigger and more tragic outcome of the Systemd controversy was the split in the communities and the rift of miss trust that grew. I’ve wondered how easy will it be to mend.
I would like to see it mend, I am a huge advocate of working together to improve and move forward for a better future in everything.
I’m not a developer so I don’t begin to understand the resource intensiveness of maintaining multiple init systems and adding to that it seems that certain groups seem to be going out of there way to develop their software to not work with anything else other than Systemd which is unfortunate.
My hope was to see Debian and Devuan work closer together sharing resources building upon each others strengths and becoming, I guess you could say the beacons of the free and open software philosophy. Where one may be Systemd focused and the other alternate init systems.
Any minimalism in my approach is just because of what I need or want to do. Aesthetically, I don't like clutter.
Agreed, for me the idea of digital minimalism is not becoming a digital monk and living in a cave as such, though with the madness in the world, sometimes that does sound appealing. I think it is about less clutter and minimising the bloat, using the tools you need but not going with out, I think we all know how easy it is to bloat our computers, and of course some OS's conveniently do it for you
It's funny as I'm writing this, looking at my Kubuntu desktop I have three different browsers open, SeaMonkey for this, Chrome for work "because I have to use it"
and Firefox for services I am logged into Youtube, Email etc. I'm not doing very well as a digital minimalist at the moment
moc for music
Ah moc. I love moc, I use it on my Devuan minimal install.
Excellent!
OK, but it is fun too
I find very convenient to have own server, it is much natural for web development.
Yes indeed Servers are fun, I run one or two myself, I guess I was thinking. Servers are sort of a specialist area where as Desktop is more widely general use.
I guess you could say a server is more lean by design maybe? Depending on what the server is used for of course.

pandoc: office ( I dont really use this that often but when i need to send a properly formatted letter i use markdown and convert it to pdf with pandoc)
Ah now pandoc, that is something I use too.
WOW! Really interesting answers, people are quite diverse in what they need and use.
This is what makes GNU+Linux so great, we have the freedom to choose and customise to our needs.
Yes it will probably become the next hipster fad Digital Minimalism, and yes I think they will probably all be using macs “bloated by design” because of their marketing.
The guy in the interview said he just uses a browser but doesn’t mention the plethora of cloud centric applications he might be using. It made me think though, for people who use their computers productively in various areas of work, and not just as overly priced electronic fashion accessories. What applications do they need? It will vary greatly depending on what you do.
I think this person managed various things, so yes I could see him working out of a browser with the help of plug-ins and cloud applications.
There’s no wrong answer as everyone’s requirements are different.
My initial question was based around a similar setup as he would have. A Mac with OSX and what ever comes with it. So mine was, my Thinkpad with Devuan Beowulf 3.1 – default desktop setup.
I wasn’t looking at the server side of things.
In a quest for digital minimalism, and a recent fresh install of Devuan on my laptop I've been thinking about what programs do I use on my system and why?
Now on my Kubuntu Desktop I have multiples of everything installed, it's insane. I find things I've installed at a point in time and have completely forgotten what it is and why I installed it.
Recently I watched a video entitled Digital minimalism, now he was a mac user but I will forgive for that, but he did say something that interested me. Not counting the platform (OS) he was on, he realised he only used one app to do everything. Google Chrome. Well, I guess I could forgive him for using Chrome as well, but it did make me think about what applications do I use, why am I using them and do I really need too.
So I have been thinking, what are my core applications? Those essential applications that you need daily.
So I thought I would ask the question here.
Not counting your distribution and it's utilities, we will call that the table you put your pen and paper on. also I think we will say the terminal is part of the table.
Really thinking about why you use the applications you use,
What are your core essential applications and can you refine them down even further. This is not about the bare minimum you could use, but what you need to get through your day.
It's minimal not bare bones.
Mine are below, but not complete.
--------------------
A Web browser
A text editor (preferably advanced)
A media player
FTP Client
A document reader (maybe the Browser can do this)
IRC (Browser could do this also)
Email (Browser again)
--------------------
Thinking about this I use SeaMonkey a suite of tools including a Browser an Email client, a web editor/creator (old) Address book and a IRC client
I guess this covers a few of my applications.
I'm sure I could add a few more here but as far as day to day work goes, I could probably get by with theses.
I use fdroid app repo on my phone and found a cross platform Gemini browser called deedum if anyone is interested in that sort of thing.
It seems to work really well.
Looks interesting, always good to see whats out there. I'm using Ariane by OppenLab https://oppen.digital/ on android, looks like you can get it for fdroid too. Not cross platform though.
@yeti yes cross protocol browsers would be nice, even in the form of an addon
In the interest and support of non commercial music streaming, somaFM have recently added two new channels to their network:
Synphaera Radio: https://somafm.com/synphaera/
n5MD. Radio:https://somafm.com/n5md/
If you like ambient spacey tunes then this will probably be to your liking. If ambient spacey is not your thing, give it a try anyway.
that is strange behaviour. Maybe you accidently hit the wifi button on or near the keyboard. I know on my laptop i have a kill switch button that is sensitive and it softblocks the wifi, ive accidently hit it in the past and not known then thought i had software issues when in fact it was PEBKAC.
what does rfkill say?
# rfkill list
Thanks dice ,yes that is what I initially thought was happening, I was somehow disabling the wifi.
Update:
I have managed to get the wifi working while out and about but not sure what I did or what the original cause of the problem was.
1. At home I configured my laptop to connect to my mobile hotspot.
2. Went out again and turned on laptop - opened Wicd and no networks available as before.
3. Enabled my mobile hotspot and refreshed Wicd and there was my mobile hotspot and about 10 other nearby wifi networks showing.
So it seems for some unknown reason I needed a configured network to be in range for Wicd to initiate the detection of other networks.
I disabled the hotspot and rebooted the machine again, then refreshed Wicd with the hotspot disable and it found various networks in range, enabled the hotspot and it found that too.
So I think I will say its working now and solved, with a caveat that it seem to be an anomaly with this laptop, as I have had Devuan and other distributions on various laptops in the past and have never come across this issue before.
Thanks

Hi all, I have a strange one here.
Recently purchased a Thinkpad X250, quickly replaced the SSD and installed Devuan of course.
It works perfectly well except one strange issue with the Wifi.
I went out this morning to do a bit of work on my laptop at a local cafe, enabled my wifi hotspot on my phone and was surprised to see in Wicd that no networks available to connect too not my mobile hotspot or any other network in range. Checking my phone there were plenty of wifi networks in range.
At home the wifi works perfectly well Wicd lists my wifi network plus any others that are in range, it also list and connects to my mobile hotspot as well.
Not sure why out of the house the wifi doesn't seem to work?
My old laptop, a Sony Vaio with Devuan installed never had this issue.
Thanks

Fantastic! Updated and running as smooth as ever.
Big thanks for all the hard work that everyone has put into making this great distro
ruenoak.
Also, you can check the simplest one- the AV-98 client. It's written in Python and runs in a terminal. AV-98 has no "strict dependencies", i.e. it will run and work without anything else beyond the Python standard library.
I haven't tried Amfora but I am quite liking the simplicity of AV-98
@andyprough Not a problem, I'm going to try out Lagrange too, always interested in trying new browsers.

@andyprough. I'm using Kristall nightly and elpher in Emacs both are Appimages so it depends on how you feel about using Appimages.
The reason for using the Emacs Appimage was the version in the repos doesn't support elpher.

Hi all,
I have recently discovered a new Internet protocol called Gemini. https://gemini.circumlunar.space/ A sort of a modern take on the Gopher protocol. As a lover of text and minimal design, it's a breath of fresh air from the migraine the Web gives me every time I open a browser these days.
Just wondering what the thoughts of the community are on Gemini.
A Gemini site is called a capsule.
Here is my Capsule

Hello I'm wondering if someone could help me with a problem I am having with dowse on a Raspberry Pi 2
When I try to boot the image I get a Kernel panic error. I have re flashed the SD card several times and re downloaded the image but I still get the same error below.
"end Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x0000000b
random: crng init done"
I have looked at a few forums about this error regarding the raspberry pi, the solutions are reinstall it to the SD card or replace the SD card.
Press enter on the keyboard or plug in a mouse.
Apart from replacing the SD card none of these seem to resolve the error sadly. I tested the SD card with Raspbian and it worked fine so I think the SD card is okay.
Hopefully someone might be able to help with this error, dowse looks like a really interesting project.
thanks

This is my favorite talk from the Devuan conference. I've watched it many times.
Hopefully one day I will be able to make it in person to a future Devuan conference.
Hi Monti I could be wrong but I don't think backports are ready for Beowulf.
I was able to run LibreOffice 6.4.2.2 using an Appimage from here: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/appimage/
seems to work fine for me.
hope this helps.
Fantastic! Thank you
Ah I'm from New Zealand too how about that :-)
Seamonkey user here yip old school Mozilla. though I wonder, Seamonkey and other Firefox based browsers, how long do they have?
Seamonkey 2.46 is based on Firefox 49 but eventually they are going to get to 57 and then what? I don't think they are big enough to go it alone.
I have Vivaldi installed and it's a good browser, I will try GNU Icecat looks interesting, hmmm maybe I'll just go back to using Lynx!
Hello, first off thanks to everyone for Devuan it's a great distribution!
I decided to setup Devuan on Digital Ocean to run as a Seti@Home server
Being a long time Seti@home fan and all things Astronomical in general, I thought it would be a good idea, and running on Devuan, a better idea.
I already have an older Ubuntu 14.04 server running seti but more the merrier I think, and it also does a few other things besides Seti.
I first upgraded Debian Jessie to Devuan then installed the boinc seti app and configured it.
It runs really well.
If anyone is interested in the Seti@home setup, I followed this tutorial here.
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ … r-debian-7
Thanks again for a great Distribution.
Ruenoak.
