Recently, installed 3.1, & added Xshisen & Xpat2 for my time wasting. smile

If you could tell me what wifi card you are using I can make sure I will include the drivers in the next FluXuan release.

Just passing through the forum, & saw new posts, this is what I have on this particular machine; (otherwise, I am normally using Realtek.)

$ lsmod | grep  wifi
iwlwifi               249856  1 iwlmvm
cfg80211              774144  4 wl,iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211

Even having problems with my Devuan Live install keep on turning off my monitor......

Sorted - the default power manager settings were the fault!

#454 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Save me from having to distro hop......[SOLVED sort of] » 2021-03-11 10:35:42

FluXuan didn't connect to wifi - would have been a reasonable choice otherwise, perhaps.
Miyo I've used before, but again I couldn't get wifi working.
Star didn't take input from keyboard or mouse.
Crowz also wouldn't take keyboard or mouse input.

Something wrong there, 4 distros, none working fully running 'live'.....at least, not on my computer, on which most other distros work out of the box.

Tried the live-minimal, could have been a possible, but wouldn't install properly, it kept going round in circles installing to deeper & deeper /Target directories.

Even having problems with my Devuan Live install keep on turning off my monitor......

Just can't figure out why Devuan doesn't work for me, it was problematical when I used it before too - so it looks like I need to look at something else. sad

Tip:  Install bleachbit and remove unused localizations.  This will remove much more (megabytes space) than it will use to be installed.  This will help reduce the size of your custom.iso .

Now that is something that always has annoyed me, I didn't know that was what bleachbit did....thanks smile

Yes, it looks like I may just have to bite the bullet & do my own installation, but I normally use wifi, not cable internet, so can I use the Installer DVD to load a basic xorg system, plus wifi, or does it only install the regular xfce desktop system(?).

EDIT: I've just found Minimal Live, & reading through it's description, looks like probably a good start point for me, I'll download it & see.

Thanks for your responses, appreciated. smile

#456 Re: Off-topic » Digital minimalism. How many applications do you use daily » 2021-03-10 11:34:39

Programs I need....

Web browser => Firefox

Music player => Xmms/Audacious

Video player => Mplayer/VLC

File manager => mc suffices, otherwise, basically any GUI one

Editor => Use what comes - vi/vim/nano mainly

Plus, I do like to have an image viewer & PySolFC installed

OK, so I'm trying to save me some time & effort...... wink

Can you let me know which of the various alternatives is closest to what I'm looking for....

I want a simple WM (Fluxbox/Openbox), web browser (normally use Firefox), file manager (mc would be enough), music player (xmms/audacious), video player (mplayer/VLC) - just a basic light weight system. smile

I am finding the 'live' Devuan a bit too program heavy for my liking, so if there's already a cut down version that I can take a look at, that'd be great.

Excellent news!

I've just come back to Devuan, (normally use AntiX Base), but am looking for an alternative O/S for my RPi computers, so I will definitely be giving these a go, thanks. smile

#459 Re: Devuan » As Debian 11 moves closer to Devuan. Is there any reason to stay on De » 2021-03-10 10:54:14

Debians decision to use systemd split the Linux community - I don't think the split can be repaired - I, personally, keep an eye on BSD, because I don't like the way Systemd works by amalgamating everything together like Windows Registry - one of the reasons I quit using Windows as soon as I could learn to use unix like O/Ses.

I do still use AntiX, because it is non systemd & easy to install, but it is getting messy, with all the unnecessary bits being introduced into the menu system - I am looking for an alternative - I have tried MIYO in the past, presently have standard 'live' Devuan installed on most of my computers, but it is somewhat 'heavy' in programs, not my personal choices, so not sure if I will continue to use it, but I know that I, personally, won't be going back to Debian.

Not that I know much about this, but from what I have read, a brigade is composed of ~3 batallions and this could be from 2000 to 8000 troops.

lol There's probably a million or two RPi users out there, but without an image to just dd to an SDHC card, I doubt that you will get much interest from them...... smile

#461 Re: ARM Builds » [Solved] Why no netinst ISO for arm? » 2020-06-17 12:15:00

Not sure many would need or want net install images, but the RPi brigade do want ready to install images... smile

#462 Re: Off-topic » Learning Linux » 2020-06-08 21:42:45

I'd forget about the RedHat book - but the others should still be mainly relavent, although some things have, of course, changed over time, the basics are still the same.

#463 Re: Forum Feedback » Why Fie? » 2020-06-08 10:16:28

The old OpenBSD installer was the worst that I had come across - it was curses based & used to make you use cylinders, & you had too keep count of where you were too. lol

So, OP, you've been using Linux almost as long as I have......each distro does things their own way, so you shouldn't really complain about one that chooses to use curses installers, it's up to the devs what they want to use, we get the privilege of using their hard work for free. smile

Back to Xubuntu.

I expect a modern OS to have a graphic installer and to be able to detect my WiFi card.

Seemed more like a rant, than asking for help - but you're right, I should have just passed by - apologies. smile

#465 Re: Forum Feedback » Why Fie? » 2020-06-07 14:26:05

Well, I suppose at 58 I might count as a youngster if everyone else hereabouts is 135. smile

"open the menu" would have been jolly nice, except the menu could not find my WiFi at all, which is odd because neither could PureOS
while Ubuntu flavours can.

Yeah, but we don't need to be 135 - I'm just a cranky 70 year old. wink

That's the problem you'll often find, especially with non free drivers, (as stated above), most distros just include the 'usual' ones.

Try running, in a terminal,

dmesg | grep wifi

(you may need to use sudo),
that should tell you the necessary driver firmware to be able to get your wifi running.

P.S. Other distros you may find worth looking at are MX linux & AntiX, usually have enough drivers for most equipment.

#466 Re: Forum Feedback » Why Fie? » 2020-06-07 08:57:56

Ha, ha, these youngsters, need everything spoon fed.....only had to open the menu to set up the wifi.... big_smile

#467 Re: News & Announcements » Beowulf 3.0.0 is here! » 2020-06-05 14:55:47

I've been an ardent AntiX user for several years, but this Beowulf release is calling to me, I've dabbled with Devuan before now, but have always gone back to my regular distro - maybe my time has come to convert..... smile

#468 Re: Off-topic » What other distro are you using (besides devuan)? » 2020-06-04 17:42:25

Well, I'm still not convinced Devuan is right for me yet, as I am still using AntiX, which I have used for many years.... big_smile

I do like using MIYO now & then though.... wink

Edit: Actually Beowulf is getting me more interested, I've installed it onto a couple of my machines. smile

#469 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Raspberry Pi 3B+ and botting from USB port » 2020-05-28 08:11:47

Maybe the Devuan image doesn't have the USB drivers built in - I've come across this with other distros, (& BSD).

P.S. The larger first partition is for the RPi4, (but doesn't harm other Rpi).

#470 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Raspberry Pi 3B+ and USB HDD shutdown » 2020-05-07 17:48:46

If you aren't using GUI software to shutdown your RPi, use halt -p, that should close files & unmount before cutting the power to both HDD & Rpi.

I've used pendrives, SSD, & HDD externally to boot from, (the HDD needed its own power supply).

Using a microSDHC card to boot from plus a HDD as / should be no problem, I do it.

You can also use the microSDHC card to boot & hold the O/S, while using the external HDD as your /home.

#471 Re: News & Announcements » Beowulf Beta is here! » 2020-04-01 18:12:08

It will depend on how many bugs need fixing, that is what the beta release is for.

#472 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Drive letter assignments [Solved] » 2020-03-28 14:52:05

Maybe by using the disk UUIDs, (PARTUUIDs), or using labels instead of relying on the Linux enumeration system.

#473 Re: ARM Builds » RPi3A+/3B/3B+/(4B) » 2020-03-18 16:38:03

As an aside, I tried putting the RPi3 64bit system onto a RPi4 Raspbian card, replacing the Debian system - it didn't work - then later on after having deleted my card, I realized that it would need all the kernel modules replacing too - my excuse is that I'm getting old. wink

I'll give the above a try sometime, & have another go myself, remembering to replace the kernel modules next time.

#475 Re: Other Issues » Can't execute program. System doesn't recognize it's location. » 2020-03-11 10:05:23

"Failed to execute child process "home/[username]/Desktop/palemoon/palemoon" (No such file or directory)"

That should read /home/[username]/Desktop/palemoon/palemoon.

However, try moving it to /home/[username]/palemoon/palemoon & running by typing ./palemoon/palemoon in a terminal.
(If that doesn't work, check the permissions.)
