I wonder if apt is bloat. I'm sure it is to a certain extent. Would the system allow you to uninstall apt and aptitude and dpkg? Then just build stuff from source. Would you still have Devuan at that point?
I'm going to try 'sudo apt purge apt aptitude dpkg' in a Devuan vm and see what happens... And really sudo is bloat too when you think about it, so I'll try 'sudo apt purge apt aptitude dpkg sudo' just for kicks.
Update: Nope, does not work.
andyprough wrote:antiX Libre respin with Linux-libre kernel
You do know the De??an kernels are already de-blobbed, right? The only difference with the "Libre" kernel is that the ability to load non-free firmware has been hobbled but that's irrelevant if you use Devuan without the non-free firmware packages installed.
lsmod shows 41 additional modules with the default kernel in Devuan over the Linux-libre kernel in antiX Libre respin. Including some stuff I don't want such as appletalk and bluetooth. It's mainly just a personal preference though - the Devuan kernel is mostly blob-free enough for me, but I prefer Linux Libre, and I have no need to install non-free firmware on a Libre system so the "hobbling" is irrelevant.
And to stay on topic: I've deleted my Debian systems so I'm now just using Arch & Alpine Linux. Alpine is my favourite and I might drop Arch
I'm proud of you!
once I get bored of GNOME 40.
I threw up in my mouth a little bit...
antiX Libre respin with Linux-libre kernel and the "abrowser" libre and privacy-focused firefox fork from the Trisquel project. All non-free firmware removed, so it is super light and super fast. None of that Intel mei module garbage to deal with.
Of course no systemd and no pulseaudio, goes without saying.
Any Terry Kath fans? Chicago's Kath was Jimmy Hendrix' favorite guitarist in the early 70's. I'm listening to Chicago, "Oh Thank You Great Spirit", which is Kath's tribute to Hendrix: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=d3LRX3qgwCw
It's got a very Hendrix-like guitar solo at the end.
btw, antix did some work on runit : https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic … lseye-iso/
seems to use antix's own packages, not the debian way of mixing sysvinit/runit..
haven't seen it yet in action, will be trying the latest iso in the following days :

antiX has had runit ISO's available for about a year now. It's blazing fast.

Hi it is a good picture, not very big size though as my laptop screen is only 1366x768.

I got the image from this website if you are interested, there are some others in the background you may like.
Nice! I was talking about HevyDevy's mountain wallpaper, but this whale picture is really a good one, thanks!

I think ffplay is also bloat, at least for music files:
for f in */*.wav; do aplay "$f"; done
Ouch!! That's nasty! You should warn someone before sharing commands like that.
I know it's an option for live-build but I don't think it will be in the installer.
Try the alpha3 ISO image for bullseye and report back, that should be pretty close to the release version.
I'm pretty shocked that a bunch of redditors got it all wrong. Shocked I tell you.

Fuck yes. Intel have contributed a huge amount to Linux, Apple are a bunch of twats.
Too busy grabbing stuff from the bsd'ers and repaying their kindness by donating literal pennies to their projects. Got to love non-copyleft licenses, trillionaires enriching themselves off the free labor of impoverished volunteers. Apple can't be bothered with copyleft code that would actually require them to share their changes.
Such intense Apple hate... Are they really any worse than Intel? It was sheer accident that IBM created a generic enough machine in their first PC that it could be cloned and actual competition became possible in the computer market. Apple has been much more careful, but still has not been able to totally control their hardware. We've had 'Boot Camp' for the Intel-based MACs since about a year after they appeared. I would hope and expect that something similar will be available for their ARM-based machines soon. It might be Android and Linux rather than Windows, but there will be fully functional OSes for these machines other than Apple's proprietary walled-garden.
I don't see Apple hate. I mean, other than HOAS literally dancing on Steve Jobs' grave. I just see a bunch of people noting that the hardware is normally underwhelming and overpriced, and that Apple makes poor software decisions that routinely make their own OS run slower on their own hardware than installing a distro on it. And benchmarks have repeatedly proven that all of this is completely true.
Also I see comments that most Apple users buy their hardware for status rather than any real benefit. Which is also obviously true, although there are probably some exceptions.
Stating the truth is not hate, even if the truth is unfavorable to something for which you are a fan.
Also, your IBM PC "sheer accident" cloning story is untrue. Open architecture and standardized, vendor-tested technology was an intentional part of the original design. https://www.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibit … birth.html
For cli, mpv has a "--gapless-audio=yes" option by which mpv claims to give gapless play. So the command would be 'mpv --gapless-audio=yes song1 song2 song3...'. Unfortunately, I could not hear any difference - there's still the same gap of about one or two beats between songs as without using the option. Possibly it would work better with a playlist or with some other option.
@andyprough. I'm using Kristall nightly and elpher in Emacs both are Appimages so it depends on how you feel about using Appimages.
The reason for using the Emacs Appimage was the version in the repos doesn't support elpher.https://kristall.random-projects.net/
https://appimage.github.io/Emacs/ruenoak.
Sounds good, thanks ruenoak. If this Lagrange browser I'm trying gives me any grief I'll try Kristall next. So far it's doing real well though and seems to be well maintained.
I'm trying out a gemini browser called "Lagrange". It's got a .deb installation file available as part of a Debian Buster zip download: https://git.skyjake.fi/skyjake/lagrange … tag/v1.1.0
It has a few gemini sites bookmarked, and has a little search engine for searching some gemini sites worth visiting. I found ten pages (or "capsules") that mention Devuan. Seems to work very fast. Not a whole lot of content to look at right now.
Just wondering what the thoughts of the community are on Gemini.
I'd like to get a recommendation for a gemini client. There's a huge number of them, and I don't want to waste a lot of hours trying them all out. Is there one that's reasonably easy to install on Devuan and that works reasonably well? Looks like Castor may be the one to try first, but I figured I'd ask your opinion since you are more familiar with Gemini.
My oldest OS is running on devices from 1999; SuSE 9.1. is installed now, I am a bit nostalgic.
What kind of hardware is running SuSE 9.1 for you? That was an all-time great OS, I did accounting work for several years on the SuSE 9.x series.

Exactly - a distro is no good unless I can drive it like a car right over a cliff and leave it in a pile of flames and smoking wreckage at the bottom. Which is why I really despise MX and Devuan - no matter how hard I beat on them they simply recover gracefully. Very frustrating.
What you haven't been told yet is that HOAS is the one who wrote the DW page hit bot for both Manjaro and MX.
As evidence, I present this picture of HOAS writing the code for the bot in Malbolge language, an obscure programming language named after Dante's eighth circle of hell: https://head-on-a-stick.github.io/sids_page
Snowden thought spying had a place, but only on the very powerful. The people in power should be spied on to make sure they don't abuse their power. As for everyone else though... NO! just no...
My 2 cents man...
Agreed Zap - it's very backward how the government and big tech collect every text message and phone call and email and the entire web history of the poor worker drone who is making $12 an hour. But he has no right to demand transparency from the government or the tech oligarchs.
That did the trick, thanks! runit on Devuan 3 with Linux-libre (with other non-libre software and firmware removed), and with KDE 5.18.5 from Norbert Preining's repos. All working together well so far.
Hi,
thanks for your great work.
Couldn't your repositories for example be added to beowulf-backports or to another differently named repo e.g "beowulf-innovative"?
This would be an evolutionary advantage over debian and at the same time starting to make devuan the better debian countering some critics like in a recent lwn thread (https://lwn.net/Articles/822066/) about the beowulf release that devuan just exists "to scratch an itch".
Using a clearly labeled repo would also avoid to break the stability of more conservative user and last but not least the work is mostly/already done by Norbert Preining.
Hi - this is not my work or repositories, it is by developer Norbert Preining.
Yes, I see it as something that could be a big advantage over Debian-based distros. And Norbert has said he has particular interest in helping Devuan - I think he may be empathetic towards Devuan's goals.
andyprough wrote:I've verified they will install on Devuan Beowulf
Good to know. Thank you. Do you highlight any improvement over Beowulf KDE?
Hi Pedro,
It's a good question. Devuan Beowulf offers version 5.14.5 of most KDE packages, so these 5.18.5 packages would bring many new features. For example, I am a heavy user of the KDE Okular PDF reader. In the new packages from Norbert's repos, Okular has some new features like writing text onto PDFs. There are many examples of these new features for the nearly 200 new KDE packages, for example new features for users of the popular Kdenlive video editing package.
If you use Devuan Chimaera (testing) or Cere (unstable), you will get a more recent 5.17.5 version of KDE packages, so you would have many of the newer features. However, the 5.18.5 packages have now received 6 or more versions of bug fixes and stability improvements over the 5.17.5 packages.
More importantly, KDE will release version 5.19 this coming week sometime, and is working on version 5.20 - and these versions will once again have many new features that are useful to KDE users. Norbert Preining has said he will continue to package these new versions as soon as he has the build packages available. So users of Norbert's KDE repos will soon be fairly far ahead of the 5.14.5 and 5.17.5 versions available in Devuan's normal repos.
Norbert Preining (long-time developer of TeX Live and most TeX related packages for Debian) is maintaining repos for recent versions of KDE: https://www.preining.info/blog/2020/05/ … or-debian/
I've verified they will install on Devuan Beowulf if I enabled the Cere repo at the time of installation. He's got repos that should work with Devuan testing as well.
He's a bit irritated that the Debian KDE group ignored his efforts to bring their packages up to date ("Waste of Resources, Bye Bye Debian KDE Team"): https://www.preining.info/blog/2020/06/ … -kde-team/
He has stated, "If I can do anything else in particular for Devuan, let me know."
