#3076 Re: Other Issues » apt apt-get synaptic madness in ceres (major BUG or what?) » 2017-08-19 14:17:02

Just for clarity:

Devuan  =  Debian
Jessie 1.0  =  Jessie  (old stable)
ASCII (in process) = Stretch (stable)
Beowulf (not yet set up) = Buster (testing)
Ceres = sid

Exactly.  I am still dumbfounded why you thought a self-promotional Off Topic first post was a good idea . . .

Maybe I should have asked on SQL support web instead, they too have people with good scripting skills.

Actually, it would seem an odd first post on just about any forum imo.

Why don't you start with one desktop and then expand incrementally instead of throwing a smorgasbord at it.

"vanity site" ?

You have one link in your profile and one in your footer and your first post is only tangentially related to Devuan. That seems a bit too self-promotional/spammy for a first post.  It was very nearly deleted.

Did I do something unethical?

No.  Just an awkward self-absorbed entrance to this community.  It was a real turnoff.

I asked for someone with a specific skill in shell scripting and math. I work very hard to make sure the web explains its purpose.
There is no registration on that web because it is not a public forum, I plug that web and its projects everywhere because that is how you find like-minded people. I am looking for people to get a project going. I am trying to create something meaningful.

It really is all about you and your project isn't it . . .  Why are you here exactly?

#3080 Re: Other Issues » apt apt-get synaptic madness in ceres (major BUG or what?) » 2017-08-19 00:45:29

AFAIK, no one is working on ceres atm. We've barely started on ascii.  Anyone running on ceres should have the chops to fix it.  But devuan has very unique problems that straight debian would not have.   amprolla has some systemd filters in place and that will improve in amprolla3 which is not operational yet.  Bottom line . . . if you want to live on the cutting edge, you just could get sushied!  Your choice.  It would progress devuan more if you were finding and helping with bugs in ascii.

*edit*  Have been re-thinking the above and I don't think it's quite right.  I don't know that the devs will ever take on anything in sid. Perhaps someone could clarify.

Another factor that might be affecting you ceres is that as yet there is no equivalent of debian's current testing  - buster.  So you've missed an entire release in your upgrade.

#3081 Re: Off-topic » If you like to write shell scripts and good with math I have a project » 2017-08-19 00:36:36

This was a rather questionable first post.  Isn't it YOU who should be contributing to improve Devuan rather than us populating the content of your vanity site?  Think about it.  Otherwise, enjoy your stay here.

So who comes up with 3 massive upgrades a day in ceres?

Probably coming from Debian.  I don't think that any of the devs are messing with ceres.

I am not being sarcastic, but have the non-vacationing americans taken over?  ;D

No.  Things are pretty much dead in the water atm.  Except for a few of us irrepressible folks from across the pond on help desk.

This is a user forum but I hardly think it's joke.   Some devs rarely come here.   They do look at bug reports - I can't remember whether you filed one - and they hang out on irc channels.  What makes it worse is that many of them in EU are on a month long 'holiday' so things have pretty much ground to a halt.

Yes, most likely the 'gtk3 sickness'.  It's going to get harder and harder to find usable themes.  No doubt works perfectly in Gnome </sarcasm>

#3088 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Security updates for devuan jessie » 2017-08-13 16:31:12

To get around the liblognorm2 dependency,  install rsyslog from backports or else replace it with syslog-ng or busybox-syslogd.

Not a good idea to use Debian repos directly.  Could possibly get some systemd  'stuff' and the numbering will be different from  devuan's merged repo which could affect updates down the line.

#3090 Re: Installation » How to proceed to install the browser midori on Devuan? » 2017-08-12 14:01:49

@brday . . . midori 0.5.11-ds1-2~bpo8+1 is available in backports.  Add this to your sources.list, download midori and then disable that repository as upgrading everything from backports is _not a good idea_.

http://us.mirror.devuan.org/merged/ jessie-backports main contrib non-free

Then the above commands will be able to find midori.

Hi.
Who would I communicate with about what 'donating a hosted machine' would entail.  I'd be happy to support in this way; I'd need someone to talk (walk!) me through the process and its implications, but in principle and at first glance I may be able to support devuan in this way.

Thanks for the offer, leloft. Please communicate with us on irc libera#devuan-dev or the dng mail list.

Why not just start a thread titled something like "Share your customized Devuan graphics"?  A good place might be the DIY forum.

#3094 Re: Devuan » After Ascii: A Devuan wishlist. » 2017-08-09 18:57:00

@darry1966 . . . I'm not sure how much of the contamination is coming from upstream and how much is being introduced by  Debian.  As steelpillow mentioned . . . if the upstream source is clean (and init agnostic) we can work around blocks coming from Debian.   But if upstream decides not to allow for other options, our work will indeed be much harder.  The  more traction that Devuan gains, the more leverage we'll have to expect upstream to support what we are doing.

#3097 Re: Other Issues » iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted » 2017-08-08 04:18:55

One more thing to try.  I also have libgphoto2-port12 version 2.5.8-1~bpo8+1 installed.  This was likely just a fluke because early on amprolla was merging bpo into the main repos.   Took me a while to catch on to that so I do have some bpo mixed in that I ordinarily wouldn't have.  But perhaps that's what gphoto2 needs?  If all else fails, maybe a card reader would work?

#3098 Re: Other Issues » iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted » 2017-08-08 03:15:01

I have no idea.  Try without.  Then the next option would be to log out/in.  Then a reboot if all else fails.   I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!  Sorry it took me a few days to get around to pulling out the camera to get the info.

#3099 Re: Other Issues » iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted » 2017-08-08 03:00:18

I have an old Canon Powershot (PTP) that wouldn't mount on Jessie.  I can't remember how I got it working but it now automounts at gphoto2://[usb:001,056]/ with root permissions.  A notification pops up and the directory appears in the Thunar side pane tree.

That directory contains these sub-directories,
    DCIM - photos are here
    MISC - empty

So you might want to install gphoto2 and see if it can find your camera at least.  Some searching on the above might give you additional hints.  No clues about your phone - don't have one.

#3100 Re: Installation » Official Docker image? » 2017-08-07 21:48:26

@fungus . . . Do you know what Docker is?

@mcandre . . . Found this old thread on the dng mail list.  There has been very little discussion of Docker over the years here - mostly lxc.  But do search dng and the botbot logs for the freenode#devuan irc channel.  You might find a kindred soul to work on Docker for Devuan.
