#251 Installation » VPN would not connect » 2024-09-18 14:28:51

Hello ,

have installed yesterday Devuan on an older computer here
and tried to connecto to university,

but the Software could not connect, so i was wondering if i am missing something.

The System received, Chimaera, afterwards updated to Daedalus, but error still present.

upon launching the software "Cisco Secure Client" 5.1.2.42

the error message is

"No connection to VPN service. Reattach failed"

Coule be that the University VPN service is down, but  rather think that maybe my Devuan installation is somehow incomplete.

Thanks.

hello EDX-0 , what is elogind and do i need to install it/configure it if i want to use Hibernate on Devuan? issue is also, that the automatic installer makes it so that hibernate does not function out of the box, atleast with Ubuntu, which i use on most of laptops nowaday.

#253 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » (howTo) hibernate after automatic install? » 2024-07-20 19:05:48

on another laptop got swap partition inserted after manipulation with gparted livesystem, then used this help here

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SkXRqe … drive_link

now this however was a ubuntu 24.04 and has systemd, but it function now there.
(fyi> i did not need create the part with "/etc/polkit-1/etc.")

hibernate can be evoken "sudo systemctl hibernate" or via "sudo pm-hibernate"
bit cumbersome process, but it can function.

#254 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » (howTo) hibernate after automatic install? » 2024-07-20 13:49:57

very complicated, hibernate is useful, could satisfy more laptops i suppose than reunning out of battery quick.

will see if can implant it later on, but seems difficult.
the automatic installer could ask if one wants this feature, which is especially useful on laptops'?

#255 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » (howTo) hibernate after automatic install? » 2024-07-20 12:06:12

yes, but why did the automatic install not take into account? is swap partition obsolete? it used to function well on earlier debian version if remember correctly.

Hello,

noticed that this laptop has gotten the automatic install of devuan, but has only 1GB Swappartition allocated.
The RAM size is probably 4GB.

Is this a Bug?
How can i properly let the laptop go into hibernation after some time, since the battery is not so good on this T60.

Helo

i have an older laptop now running Devuan 5.0 ,
it has dedicated Thinkpad Buttons and F8 is supposed to toggle Wireless/On/Off<

now my issue is that whenever when Laptop wake from sleep, Wifi is on (again), instead i have toggled it OFF via F8.
next issue is that F8 Button is supposed to toggle all Wireless *atleast that is what i understand under it
but Bluetooth is not toggled and remains running and i see no toggle to Switch On/Off bluetooth.

nmcli radio wifi
disabled
sudo service bluetooth status
bluetooth is running.

i am using XFCE which is standard for Devuan, maybe there lies the problem?

thank you very much.

#258 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » removing pulseaudio correctly / Chimaera » 2024-01-07 11:24:44

Hello Ralph,

thank you for the suggestion,

what i ended up doing is uninstalling "everything" that was proposed, but found out that tasksel would everytime re-install pulseaudio and remove everytime every desktop flavour chosen with all the corresponding packages if afterwards again chosen to remove pulseaudio.

so i then installed xfce4 manually afterwards without tasksel command, but this time added

pulseaudio-

like in

sudo apt-get install xfce4 pulseaudio- xfce4-goodies

which then achieved the desired to stop installing the pulseaudio and doing so without breaking the desktop.

Audio still could be better, but the year is long, so lets hope well.

Hello ,

i have upgraded my Alsa-Only Laptop from Jessie to Chimaera and have found that it again installed Pulseaudio in the process.

Since on Linux Laptop Audio is generally weak-spot, thought that Alsa-only at least alleviates the issue;

Now, i have an old command that i copy-pasted from the internet in use since debian wheezy, which helped well,
but i needs to adapt for 2024.

now, if i like to use the command, it would deinstall also XFCE4 and Task-Desktop-XFCE4, which i like to avoid.

Please help to adapt the command to achieve this.

original command

sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio libpulse-browse0 paman pavumeter pavucontrol
sudo mv /etc/asound.conf /etc/asound.conf.bak
rm ~/.pulse-cookie
rm -r ~/.pulse
sudo apt-get install alsa-base alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui alsa-utils alsa-oss alsamixergui libalsaplayer0

newer version?

 sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio libpulse-mainloop-glib0 paman pavumeter pavucontrol

however

sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio libpulse-mainloop-glib0 paman pavumeter pavucontrol

#260 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » nvidia-persistenced failed to initialize » 2024-01-04 19:26:53

hello ,

i have this issue "persistenced" on upgrade from ascii to beowulf with FX Quadro 770m<
the solution from "StopAI" worked perfectly to get me back into Desktop with Graphics Accelerations.

what i did>

1. uninstall official Nvidia/driver 340.108 in recovery.
2. install as suggested "sudo apt install --no-install-recommends nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver"
3. reboot, voil'a

now it is understanding that the next step, if wanted to upgrade further, would be to jump from Beowulf stright to Ceres, or uninstall again, and regain X without Nvidia, and go from there to upgrade path ZChimaera Daedalus Ceresa.

EDIT> i tried first with the official driver package from Nvidia, since this worked in the previous iterations of Debian/Devuan, but would no longer function on Devuan 3.0 for some reason or another.

#261 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Upgrade Beowulf to Chimaera / No Network-Manager (applet) » 2024-01-04 12:22:43

solution:

the solution for "none of the screen lock tools ran succesfully, the screen will not be locked"
is to "disable" the screensaver in "PowerManager" "System" "security" > untick "Lock Screen when system is going to sleep"

now system would suspend as desired, and even ask for password when resuming, which is intended behaviour (i have enabled screensaver lock in XFCE Settings > screensaver setting)

#262 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Upgrade Beowulf to Chimaera / No Network-Manager (applet) » 2024-01-04 09:16:24

thank you,

i resorted to full install of chimaera, and now the ethernet Network is back in Network Icon,
also ATI acceleration works, which i did not fully expect, very nice!

now the only issue is that suspend is no longer active when closing lid as the screensaver seem somehow prevent it;

if i may, please have a look.

https://imgur.com/CYgDPRw.png

otherwise,all suspend function seem present, also took over the swapfile 1,5x times the ram (T60 can only utilise around 3GB of Ram due to 32bit limitation of chipset), so hibernation should function also fine

alright, it seems to "autoreconnect" now after suspend, it just takes a longer time;
still have no visible info about being connected to ethernet in taskbar or otherwise, but i guess thats a minor issue;

if i want to disconnect now with laptop open, probably would have to disconnect the cable then, or maybe there is some terminal command to achieve this.

would say issue is partly solved, thanks alot.

rolfie i cannot help to think that after suspend the wired is gone; before, when it was gone i could hit "connect" and it would re-establish ethernet connection; now, i dont find any such connect button any longer, also the icon in taskbar is only showing "Wi-Fi Networks" > (greyed out) > "WiFi is disabled" > (one below) "VPN Connections" ;

no wired , but again, after reboot the internet is functioning through Ethernet cable;

hello ,

it seems that not everything is function,
since now found out that when resuming from suspend, the ethernet is no more active.

there is a NetworkApplet visible now, but it would only handle "wiFi" as it seems, and i dont know how to "hang" on after losing the Ethernet when resuming from suspend.

when resuming from suspend, there would be short instance in terminal where it says like

revalidation failed

thanks for the valid help.

Hello ,

found out that i can fully upgrade the older laptop T60 from Debian Wheezy to Devuan Chimaera with nearly no problem and also not loose graphics acceleration for ATI which is very nice!
Thanks!

Now one issue is visiable since the Devuan 4.0 is installed i no longer have a Network Icon in the upper taskbar (for Ethernet).

The internet functions , i can browse, but am worried that this might cause issue, since i have not found any applet to add to panel.

probably i am missing network-manager?

hello ,

ia m on fresh install of Devuan jessie on this laptop and it wont update since it is old laptop with graphics not supported by newer systems i suppose,

so my question is how can i best install newer firefox-esr (without need of huge dependencies) for devuan jessie?

it is because i want to turn into alsa-only laptop that i am not wanting to use the official firefox-esr ftp repository;
is is understanding that all the firefox-esr from devuan is alsa-only enabled,

would like to install "xar" package

however,
building fails, with error

now it seems on Devuan Chimaera, the libssl1.0-dev is not available, but instead there is installed libssl-dev.

can i just install libssl1.0-dev from Debian Stretch or will this cause problems with libssl-dev?

thanks.

Hello ,

on the computer have 3 SSD installed

2 NVME with Windows 11/7 and the SSD for Linux Debian/Devuan;

the issue is that when installing newer version of Devuan/Debian, it would after installation only list one NVME in Grubmenu (the NVME0 with Win11) and disregard the second NVME (Windows 7); This happens on Devuan 3.0+;

installing Devuan 2.0 Ascii gets the Grubentries correctly listed

Devuan 2.0
+ recovery
NVME0p1 (Win11)
NVME1p1 (Win7)

however, since the APU is bit newer, it needs newer kernel to function correctly, and upgrading to Devuan 3.0 make me loose again the entry for Windows 7, and during the upgrade getting warned :

Warning: os-prober will be executed to detect other bootable partitions.
Its output will be used to detect bootable binaries on them and create new boot entries.
Found Windows Boot Manager on /dev/nvme1n1p1@/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi

thöank you,
it seems that on one laptop i had still installed tailscale,
and it was enough to set-up my whole home network;
after that same laptop running Ubuntu 16.04 was also no longer connecting to servers via apt-get ,
found that tailscale was there; and re-moving it completely, and rebooting modem, should have solved the issue (have not tested the Devuan yet, but i think this was the issue with failing to connect, since i had this before; one tailscale installation breaking havoc on home network > otherwise it seems an useful tool to connect to homenetwork from outside, but it created problems now more than once here , too).
