#2652 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » MATE 1.20 on devuan ascii » 2018-06-15 22:54:33

I hear you. You made your point (rather dramatically) and I will now butt out.  But before I go, I have a suggestion.  Could you please put [ code ] tags around all the c/p from the terminal like this?  There's even a point and clicky menu above the input box to help you do it.

# deb cdrom:[devuan_ascii_2.0.0_amd64_netinst]/ ascii main non-free

# deb cdrom:[devuan_ascii_2.0.0_amd64_netinst]/ ascii main non-free

deb http://pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged/ ascii main non-free contrib
deb-src http://pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged/ ascii main non-free contrib

MIYO + what looks like a radura symbol.
So I go to find one and discover it's been 'sanitized' with greeny goodness.
Good grief!!!

So will this rebuilt mate-power-manager find its way into Devuan's repos?

Yes.  antofox maintains MATE for Devuan.

Good grief.  You do have an overactive imagination.  It a GNU and quite harmless.

It indicates other Linux distros in a generic way if a specific icon is not available.

@colby . . . you should not have any packages installed directly from the Debian repos.  Doing so could really break your your system.  Packages from the Debian repos are pulled by amprolla via a redirect that filters out incompatible packages.

The following network-manager packages are available in the ascii repos:

https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/d1pk … ease=ascii

The mate packages, unless they are very new, should also be available on the Devuan repos.  I let you do your own searching.

@msi . . . have you checked ascii-proposed for the newest mate-power-manager?

Firefox can’t find the server at deve22%20backgrouind.

You'll have to post it online somewhere if you don't have access to a server.

#2660 Re: DIY » My Wallpaper » 2018-06-14 04:02:55

Here's the magic incantation.  Thought this early description of how amprolla works might be an interesting example:

Or if you want a thumbnail

thank you Siva. you are right my question did have 2 sides and you did answer both completely.

no, I will not use Devuan unstable completely but check if there are packages not available in Devuan Jessie being able to be used by pinning in Devuan Jessie. I hope pinning is possible?

Why not look in ASCII and/or Beowulf repos for what you need before jumping to Ceres.

#2663 Re: Installation » Wrong /etc/locale.gen after Ascii net-install with additional locale » 2018-06-13 15:20:03

Please report bugs to http://bugs.devuan.org  It's easy to do by email following the instructions.

#2664 Re: Other Issues » [Solved] Firefox 60 » 2018-06-13 15:13:23

snapd is on the banned package list for systemd dependency.  So no you wouldn't be able to install snaps on Devuan.  Unless, of course, you adopt and maintain that package to remove the dependency from release to release.

#2665 Re: Installation » Installation failure for specific locale (gr) [SOLVED]. » 2018-06-12 15:34:53

Some DMs are more friendly that others to setting locales.  KDE can be a bit fussy with this.  Please read the Release notes and also search this forum for KDE.

#2666 Re: Installation » [Solved] Ascii upgrade (also) messed up this Devuan Jessie » 2018-06-12 15:30:27

Have you read the Release notes?  I suspect something is amiss with the backend combo needed for your setup.

#2667 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment & Falkon » 2018-06-12 15:00:10

Why anyone would recommend appimage, flatpak or snaps is beyond me.  It's a great way to bloat your system.  And is there any way to know what exactly is in those options of convenience?

Even on the Falkon page, the first recommendation is to "install falkon package from your distribution’s repositories".

#2668 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment & Falkon » 2018-06-12 03:24:29

Start with backports and work your way further from ASCII. Be prepared that it may or may not go smoothly.   Not much has been done on beowulf yet.

#2669 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment & Falkon » 2018-06-12 02:59:00

Backports is an optional repository that builds testing pkgs for stable.  Add it to your sources.list.   But be selective and only install the pkgs that you need, not everything that's available in there.

#2670 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment & Falkon » 2018-06-12 02:42:38

Have you checked ASCII backports?  Maybe you could package it yourself if all else fails.  At least they aren't on the list of banned packages so that's a good start.

#2671 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Missing *gotta-have* program... » 2018-06-12 00:46:50

Have you checked pkginfo.devuan.org?  And also backports?

#2672 Re: Installation » pkgmaster.devuan.org or deb.devuan.org? » 2018-06-11 14:55:39

The recommended sources are defined here:
https://devuan.org/os/etc/apt/sources.list

deb.devuan.org is a pool of mirrors that are all synced to pkgmaster.

The maintainer of that wiki will hopefully be changing that presently .

#2673 Re: Devuan » Why Devuan? » 2018-06-10 07:16:32

There is no reason to assume that in Debian sysvinit, openrc and runit will continue to be available or that every application won't require systemd to work.
