#226 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Problems with a Seagate portable drive » 2021-11-19 14:48:07

Ron

Okay, here is some new info. I don't think my portable drive is dead after all. I was backing up my files last night to my wife's portable drive that was working when I remembered I wanted the drive to be formatted as ext4, just like my portable drive was. So this morning I did that, and lo and behold, the drive was no longer writable. So then I formatted it again, back to ntfs, and then it was writable again. How can I make these drives writable as ext4? I did this with ascii no problem (at least on my portable drive). Why isn't it working with Miyo/Devuan 5?

#227 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Problems with a Seagate portable drive » 2021-11-19 01:02:42

Ron

So I deleted the partition, created a new one, and then formatted it. Still can't write to it. Tomorrow I'm taking a hammer to it, so if it isn't dead yet, it sure will be tomorrow.

Also, after a semi-long search I found my wife's portable drive. It is one year younger, and much less used than mine (also a WD brand). I can read and write to that one, so I'm pretty sure mine is dead.

Thanks for your help HoaS (and also Altoid).

I'll try reformatting it later when I have some free time and see what happens.

Ron

Here's the output:

ron@ron:~$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for ron:
root@ron:~# mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt
mount: /mnt: WARNING: source write-protected, mounted read-only.
root@ron:~# touch /mnt/test
touch: cannot touch '/mnt/test': Read-only file system

Apparently when it is first plugged in, it appears to be read and write, but when I try to do something, it switches to read only. Two examples:

1) After plugging it in, if I right click in it (after browsing to it), the Create Folder and Create File options are not greyed out. But when I click either one of them, I get an error message that says it is read only and after that those two options are greyed out.

2) After plugging it in, if I open a simple text file on it (with Pluma), the file appears to be editable, but once I make the first change, it becomes read only (I notice this in the title bar of Pluma).

After doing one of the above two, I get the following from the sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdc command (which is weird because I can still see it and open files on it):

$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdc
[sudo] password for ron:
/dev/sdc: No such file or directory

Does this suggest the drive is going bad?

#230 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Problems with a Seagate portable drive » 2021-11-18 01:26:27

Ron
ron@ron:~$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdc

/dev/sdc:
 readonly      =  0 (off)

So how do I go about getting it to be read and write?

I feel really dumb saying this, but regarding your second instruction, I don't know what you mean by "the letter assigned to the drive."

Okay, this is a noobish question. I just installed Miyo Linux and I'm having problems with a Seagate portable drive. I can plug it in but it's read only. It has worked before I installed Miyo, so I'm thinking it is a permission problem, although the drive is old and it's possible it's failing. FTR, I can write to my flash drive. How to check the permission? When I right click the drive's icon and select properties, then select the permissions tab, it says there "The permissions of "Seagate Backup" could not be determined."

Thanks for your quick response MiyoLinux. I also noticed a bunch of apps that begin with libxfce..... and I'm hesitant to delete those. Should I not touch those?

Running Miyo ceres. I installed Mate and deleted Openbox. Can I delete the Xfce power manager without any consequences? I ask because in my notes for the old version of Miyo it says don't deleted it (I'm assuming that instruction came from MiyoLinux but it's been so long ago I can't remember). However, I know it's not running and the Mate manager is.

Okay, so I installed it and so far things are well. Actually, they're better. A week ago I installed the current Devuan, and I was getting horrible screen tearing in my browser. On this Miyo (ceres) I'm not.  👍  Any idea what is the difference?

First, I hope this is the proper board to post this. I did a quick internet search for this problem but came up empty. I just installed Xfburn and am trying to burn an .iso image, but I keep getting the error message below. I have no idea how to fix this.

So is this the Ceres which became Devuan 4?

Hi Miyo, are there any versions of Miyo that don't use pulseaudio? Thanks.

I'm trying to add the ppa for inxi sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unit193/inxi but I keep getting this:

Ron@Ron:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unit193/inxi
[sudo] password for Ron:
sudo: add-apt-repository: command not found

It worked on ascii; don't know why it's not working on 4.0.

The other issue is that when I open a sound app (Audacity, SMPlayer, start up sound) I'm getting an annoying POP sound. It just pops when you open the app. After that it's okay. Any ideas on this?

[I'm still having the screen tearing issue mentioned in my other post.]

So I deleted compton and kept picom. I created picom.conf and put it in the .config folder. This is what I put (and only this):

#backend = "xrender";
backend = "glx";

but I sill am experiencing terrible screen tearing. Should I enable or unenable hardware acceleration in the browser? Is there anything else to try?

EDIT
Hardware acceleration was off, so I switched it on. Screen tearing is still bad.

Thanks HoaS, I got the .deb file installation working. But I'm still scratching my head over the other issue. I found the sample config file, but it is not matching the instructions I have. My instructions are to find the lines

backend = "xrender";
#backend = "glx";

and change them to

#backend = "xrender";
backend = "glx";

But I can only find this:

# Other
backend = "xrender";
mark-wmwin-focused = true;
mark-ovredir-focused = true;
# use-ewmh-active-win = true;
detect-rounded-corners = true;
detect-client-opacity = true;
refresh-rate = 0;
vsync = "none";
dbe = false;
paint-on-overlay = true;
# sw-opti = true;
# unredir-if-possible = true;
# unredir-if-possible-delay = 5000;
# unredir-if-possible-exclude = [ ];
focus-exclude = [ "class_g = 'Cairo-clock'" ];
detect-transient = true;
detect-client-leader = true;
invert-color-include = [ ];
# resize-damage = 1;

# GLX backend
# glx-no-stencil = true;
glx-copy-from-front = false;
# glx-use-copysubbuffermesa = true;
# glx-no-rebind-pixmap = true;
glx-swap-method = "undefined";
# glx-use-gpushader4 = true;
# xrender-sync = true;
# xrender-sync-fence = true;

Regarding what hevidevi wrote, is that the case? I still have picom installed. Should I delete one or the other? The whole reason for this is that I have big time screen tearing in my browser.

I just installed Devuan 4.0 over top of 2.1 and am having a few issues. The first issue is that when I click on .deb files to install apps, instead of installing they open with the archiver. I know these are .deb files that are supposed to install the app.

The second issue is I installed Compton because of screen tearing in the browser. The instructions I was given said after installing it to go to /home/**/.config and open compton.conf and edit some lines. The problem is this file doesn't exit. I double checked and made sure Compton is installed and was added to the list of start up apps, but no config file for it exists.

Your update bypassed the apt database. Synaptic looks at the database and not at the application.

Well, I have the latest SMPlayer installed via a .deb file, which I don't think is the most current offered by the database, and yet Synaptic shows it as installed. (Version 21.1.0+2.1) This is on Devuan 2.1.

I updated inxi due to a thread in another forum. Here's how I did it: First, opened "/etc/inxi.conf" as administrator and change the line B_ALLOW_UPDATE=false  -to-  B_ALLOW_UPDATE=true. Save and close the file. Then ran sudo inxi -U in terminal to update inxi to latest version. Here's the problem, when I look in Synaptic, it says my current version is still 2.3.5-1, but when I run inxi --version in the terminal it comes up to the latest. See screenshot. Why is Synaptic still showing the old version?

According to the "horse's mouth," your cascade of people is only 2. Where are you getting your information?

. . .
Sadly, that's become what this situation has been reduced to.  Thank the palemoon devs for being a bunch of absolute morons.

I was wrong about Palemoon devs being any good it begins to seem...

Requiring people to respect their trademarks, and the open source license, which is what I think you mean, and is the latest problem, does not make them morons. If people don't respect the open source license, then what's the point? I think those who don't respect the open source license or their trademarks are the morons who are causing all the problems.

Also, the reddit shithole is run by rabid anti-palemoon folks, so you're not going to get the facts there. As a matter of fact, they have posted outright lies. If you go there and try to post facts, you get banned. It's already happened. And your links to the Pale Moon threads actually prove my point.

Don't put any stock in the rankings on Distrowatch.

Thanks for this post, Artix Linux slipped under my radar, I never heard of it before. It looks like a good distro.
