#226 Re: Installation » Post Install House Keeping » 2018-06-09 13:50:02

Ive installed devuan a dozen or more times and on my setup usually worked fine, but i am using older hardware and the reason i i have installed so many times is i am addicted to linux. The one litmus test i have atm is a dual core machine that is my media pc (video audio) and has not been updated yet, im waiting for stable ascii so far it has been running fine on rc1 openrc for about 3 months i think.

Post install house keeping to me is making the web browser safe to use, use a host file and protect privacy but i dont use social media only forums but thats not to say im not prone to misuse. Other than that if you are satisfied with Devuan post install should require that you seek to backup your system for backups i highly recommend fsarchiver

Well done devs, i would take my hat off to you if i wore one alas its a hoodie wink

I like youtube-viewer , ill only use youtube-dl if i want to keep a video but just to stream youtube-viewer is good in my opinion.

https://www.archlinux.org/packages/comm … be-viewer/

Below is a pretty simple command to get going and opens up the stream in vlc for me.

$ youtube-viewer

Might be alot of users jump ship to other platforms, could possibly be a money pit for Ms and the downfall of github. If they Ms leave it alone which i doubt they will people may stay but im already reading people are moving away after hearing this news. Its like a virus has paid its way into github, oh i forget, thats right ms is a virus!

I dont know of any hacks but you could try disassemble and give it a good clean, get the dust and cobwebs out. Maybe use a custom fan setup type cooler pad for it. I use a small desktop fan for mine in summer plus a cooler pad.

#233 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » can't mount external device » 2018-05-27 12:05:30

You say the wheel group does not exist which is a little strange.

Maybe create it.

#groupadd wheel
#gpasswd -a (user) wheel

I think this is correct commands, working on my terminal.

# denotes being root user.

#234 Re: Off-topic » Music » 2018-05-26 06:23:29

^ that album popped up on my youtube recommended list. Not a bad album, they were definitely ahead of there time musically.

#236 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » can't mount external device » 2018-05-25 12:23:34

If you have udevil installed, you can access your drives from the commandline, atleast i would hope you can.

just an example = udevil mount /dev/sdx  /media (or /mnt)

find your drives with cmd in terminal lsblk --fs

then udevil mount /dev/sdx x denotes drive letter.

Give it a try and post back your outcome.

#239 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » can't mount external device » 2018-05-25 11:15:51

In my experience, pcmanfm is not a good choice for devuan.

Nice minimal way to access your drives would be to install the spacefm file mananger and udevil.

https://ignorantguru.github.io/spacefm/

https://ignorantguru.github.io/udevil/

Otherwise thunar file manager and gvfs.

#240 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Hyperbola Thread » 2018-05-25 09:25:34

To the OP, give it  try. I didnt have many issues with it at the time as long as you are aware of the differences in installing arch the non systemd way, i thought it was quite smart what they have done. Parabola similarly has a no systemd openrc spin as well.

#241 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Hyperbola Thread » 2018-05-25 09:10:51

I have use Hyperbola, it is a good arch no systemd spin and worked fine on my laptop.

https://www.hyperbola.info/news/milky-way-v02-release/

http://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.p … ut_systemd

Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre     OpenRC     (2) "LTS Arch snapshot versions + security/stability patches ported from Devuan"; amd64, i686

While not a devuan spin it does use devuan as part of its working mechanisms going by what is stated in without-systemd.

#243 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » How do you encrypt files? » 2018-05-21 12:25:25

Sorry to spam the thread but i find these topics interesting.

Have a read of this in regards to steganography .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerckhoffs%27s_principle

Kerckhoffs's principle

In cryptography, Kerckhoffs's principle (also called Kerckhoffs's desideratum, assumption, axiom, doctrine or law) was stated by Netherlands born cryptographer Auguste Kerckhoffs in the 19th century: A cryptosystem should be secure even if everything about the system, except the key, is public knowledge.

#244 Re: DIY » a simpler way for minor distros to make certain actions doable nonroot » 2018-05-21 12:04:21

isnt this basically an edit to sudoers? Ive edited sudoers to allow my user access to /sbin/reboot and /sbin/poweroff. Pretty simple process and from what i gather a safe bet? I dont understand the daemon side of this, perhaps meant for a broader user base than single user?

#245 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » How do you encrypt files? » 2018-05-21 11:57:47

gpg is good. You could use steghide too, hides files inside of images http://steghide.sourceforge.net/ , google Steganography.

Another interesting program i have found recently is called tcplay https://github.com/bwalex/tc-play

For gpg I use a program called gpg-crypter for ease of access - https://sourceforge.net/projects/gpg-crypter/

sorry first two are not gui programs, gpg-crypter is but you need knowledge of gpg and terminal commands to have it work. A good tutorial is here: https://theprivacyguide.org/tutorials/gpg.html

#246 Re: Devuan » Install kali linux tools on devuan? » 2018-05-19 07:52:50

Have you seen the sizes of the meta packages for kali, massive....

https://www.kali.org/news/kali-linux-metapackages/

I would think a great deal of those tools would be reliant on systemd.

#247 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] Deleted dual boot, how to fix partition resizing problem? » 2018-05-18 16:06:19

I dont understand how sda6 can become sda5.  Ive only ever experienced deletion of exact partitions, i mean if i delete sda3 my other drives still present as sda1,2,4 it would need manual intervention to re-name the scheme. Maybe because my machine is MBR not GPT?

#248 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] Deleted dual boot, how to fix partition resizing problem? » 2018-05-18 15:39:34

If mint was on sda2 and you deleted it its just deleted. Your partition scheme should stay as created unless you recreate it by either shrinking or growing/moving the volumes on the hdd. It will require a whole lot of fuckery to achieve what you want, ive done it. I had 3 partitions, sda1,2,3. Because i am anal retentive i wanted a sda3 to become sda1 that meant i needed to move 200 GB to the start of the drive and re label it and mess about with drive letters. The i discovered fsarchiver and how to back up my partitions.

#249 Re: DIY » The hunt for a good browser 2017 edition » 2018-05-18 14:33:12

Another reason i like net install. I get to choose my browser, currently palemoon with customised userjs and hosts file.

#250 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] Deleted dual boot, how to fix partition resizing problem? » 2018-05-18 14:18:56

You thought partitions would automagically re-allocate?

No... im afraid you need to research this little endeavour some more.

I would recommend learning how to use fsarchiver http://www.fsarchiver.org/

It would seem you want to move sda5 into sda2 position on the hdd. Not a good idea.
