#1 Re: Installation » Experiences with Beowulf Beta Desktop Iso » 2020-03-26 19:15:54

Posting this to possibly save someone else trouble-shooting time.

I have a 1 tb spinning HDD with a "long time use" install and updated ASCII (2), and two 250 gb SSDs. My practice on installation is to uninstall completely Mate Screeensaver, Gimp and PulseAudio.  I set Power Manager to set the power button to "shutdown" and did similar to the suspend options, as well as inhibiting the screen sleep/dim mode. It does not hang.  I downloaded Beowulf RC from Ralph's borta server, burned it to a usb stick, and proceeded to install to one of the ssd. I rebooted and I uninstalled the above three programs, and did the power manager settings as above.

Everything seemed to work fine, except that after a few minutes the screen would go dark, and the mouse and keyboard would become non-usable.  I would have to initiate a shutdown by the power button.  The laptop (Lenovo L512) could then be restarted normally.

A few days later I downloaded the Beowulf beta, and installed it to the same ssd, in the same way as above.  Results were the same as with the RC.  So I reinstalled to the other ssd.  Same results as the first ssd.  I then reinstalled this time choosing the xfce desktop instead of mate.  Same results.  I then downloaded the ASCII 2 iso, and installed choosing mate desktop to an ssd.  Uninstalled the screensaver, gimp, and pulseaudio. Result was no hang. I then apt updated it and then dist-upgraded to Beowulf. Worked fine, with no hang.

So I again installed with the beowulf iso stick to the ssd, this time leaving the screensaver installed, and only removing gimp and pulseaudio.  I did the inhibit screensaver settings, and the above power manager settings.  Result was no hanging.  I am using that beowulf install to  write this.

One thing of note; when the hang would occur, if I fiddled with the mouse, and then shutdown and rebooted, there would be a "new file" icon on the desktop.  That would seem to indicate that the laptop was still "computing" with only the video not working.  I suspect that the screensaver program has something
to do with recovering from a "sleep" state.  Oh yes, I did try disabling the pci bus and the cpu "powering down" after some non-use time in bios.  No joy with that.

(edit to fix formattinh)

Ok, it is not a problem.  I will pruge elogind and use pmount.  I have used it before and it works.  Afraid of systemd?  Not by a long shot, although I so like to learn.  Thanks for your time.

KatolaZ:  here you go .. Note that I am not concerned about the stray (unused) systemd files; only that systemd code should not be running, expecially on boot.

Yes, I did first thing.  That is why I deleted the (other) systemd folders and files; they should not have mattered to the os.  However when the systemd folder in /run got recreated on reboot, I got kind of concerned.  Moreso, when I could not chattr +i that empty folder to immutable.  I know I can just reinstall and pay more attention, but there is little learning in that. wink

Thanks for all your trouble for me.

Best regards,
Bob

Yesterday I was poking around looking at config files, to see why wicd was randomly  disconnecting from the router.  I notice a number of systemd folders/files that I thought should not exist.  This is ascii 2, new install shortly after it was released.  I made 3 new ext3 partitions and formatted them.  /boot, / and swap.  I kept the /home partition unformated.  I renamed the .config files so as not to screw up with newer packages.
I choose slim and mate desktop and installed.  I also pinned systemd in /etc/apt/preferences.d.  I use synaptic for updates, seldom apt-get, and occasionally gdebi. Today I have renamed all the found systemd files/folders and all seemed okay.  I rebooted and all stayed renamed except for the systemd folder in /run.  I deleted it, rebooted and it was recreated.  I deleted it again, created a new empty systemd folder and attempted to make it immutable.  The os would not allow that.  I was under the impression that only libsystemd0 should be in existance.  It seems that some aspect of systemd is running on bootup.  Before I trash this install, could someone enlighten me to what is going on?  As the pretend preacher in "Cat Ballou" says; "All contributions are greatfully received".

Bob

Ralph, rrq, has indicated that he has little time to do the man docs for vdev.  I have offered to do the editing for any possible contributions to this man documentation.  I have cleaned up the original man file from Jules, but it needs more information.  If you could send me your contributions of how to use vdev, I will include it.  Aiter, rrq, and others, please consider sending your thoughts to  me at ve5agbob@gmail.com.  I will send your contributions to rrq and aiter for their considerations prior to finalizing the man doc file (these gentleman have been the main current devs of vdev).

That said, I personally have little understanding of udev and vdev, and if someone else has the itch to take this over, please be my guest.

Best regards,
Bob

#8 Re: Installation » ca-certificates issue? SOLVED » 2016-12-06 02:26:18

Update..the ssh service was not running; indeed I had to install ssh meta file, and enabled the ssh service to run on startup.  I also trashed my .mozilla profile, and started that from scratch.  Now I can log onto this site with devuan beta2, and also onto my secure webmail site.  So I will mark this as solved, even though I am not sure which procedure solved it.  I wonder if all this was an install hiccup?

All is good!

Bob

Further to the above..I checked on the debian site, and it seems that jessie uses the 2014, and sid uses the 2015 dated version.  So I imagine that the certificates is not my problem.  I will await further developments.  Sorry for the "red herring",

Bob

Devuan beta2 (DVD install) seems to be running very well on the thinkpad, and is very fast.  It is updated as of this morning.  I do have a problem logging onto secure sites (this one included).  I also tried my webmail site; same problem.  However, when I use tor, there is no problem.  In comparing the dates on the ca-certificate file, I find that ubuntu's one was updated on Feb 2016, from 2014, whereas the devuan ca-certificate date is still from 2014.  I have not enabled backports on the devuan thinkpad yet, but I suspect that would allow me to update the certificates, and would fix this problem.
That said, I would sooner not risk enabling backports, as some systemd might creep in.  I will wait to see how this is fixed within devuan.
I did notice a post regarding backports flooding the system with newer (unwanted) updates.

Thanks to all who worked so hard on this project.

Bob

@fsmithred;
I added the source line you suggested and am happy to report that all is well.  Will be spending all day tomorrow playing.
Again, thanks.

Thanks, fsmithred;
I did uncomment those four lines in the sources.list, and then apt-get update.  I will add the mirror line, but wonder if that will change anything, since I could install from the (main?) repo.
Thanks for the tip wrt getting a dhcp lan address.  I will try that this evening when we get back home.  My wife and I are going out the dinner and then to a Christmas concert this evening.

Best regards,
Bob

ps..is wicd systemd encumbered?

#13 Re: Installation » firmware? » 2016-12-04 18:44:42

Last night I installed beta2 using the dvd; it installed okay, but on reboot, there was no networking tools for the wireless.  Actually, after the install, I disconnected the lan cable and rebooted, and subsequently re-plugged the lan cable...no connection.  Okay, so I rebooted, and low and behold, the lan auto-connected.  Then I looked for some wireless tools, and could not find wicd, or simple-netaid installed.  In fact, neither was available from the repos.  So my question is:  Is there some other repo than the (four) suggested in the sources.list?  By the way, I did the install from a usb stick, rather than a dvd, so as to get a faster install.  Perhaps that has some bearing on this issue?  Perhaps wicd has a dependency on libsystemd0?

Also, prior to this bare metal install, I attempted to upgrade an old wheezy mate install, following the instructions on this site.  It was sort of successful, except that even with pinning systemd, and libsystemd0, systemd kept on getting installed.  No problem..I had made a clonezilla of the wheezy install, just in case.

Bob
