iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted

Hi All,

The iPhone and my Camera are not being mounted by Thunar but as you can see below, via the lsusb command, the system is seeing them.

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 05ac:1294 Apple, Inc. iPhone 3GS
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 04cb:01c1 Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd FinePix F31fd (PTP)

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks, MTB.

Have you checked Thunar's Preferences?  Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced>>Volume management

Sometimes jmtpfs is sufficient.

Enable Volume Management is already checked.

My Fuji camera is PTP and it doesn't detect the iPhone 3GS neither.

Re: iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted

I have an old Canon Powershot (PTP) that wouldn't mount on Jessie.  I can't remember how I got it working but it now automounts at gphoto2://[usb:001,056]/ with root permissions.  A notification pops up and the directory appears in the Thunar side pane tree.

That directory contains these sub-directories,
    DCIM - photos are here
    MISC - empty

So you might want to install gphoto2 and see if it can find your camera at least.  Some searching on the above might give you additional hints.  No clues about your phone - don't have one.

That's funny I suppose as the following are installed but not gphoto2.

libgphoto2-6
libgphoto2-l10n
libgphoto2-port10

I'll install gphoto2 now and see what happens.

Do I need to restart the session for the installation of gphoto2 to take effect?

I have no idea.  Try without.  Then the next option would be to log out/in.  Then a reboot if all else fails.   I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!  Sorry it took me a few days to get around to pulling out the camera to get the info.

Re: iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted

One more thing to try.  I also have libgphoto2-port12 version 2.5.8-1~bpo8+1 installed.  This was likely just a fluke because early on amprolla was merging bpo into the main repos.   Took me a while to catch on to that so I do have some bpo mixed in that I ordinarily wouldn't have.  But perhaps that's what gphoto2 needs?  If all else fails, maybe a card reader would work?

Also, you should check permissions on /dev/bus/usb/001/00[56]
If udev doesn't recognize their vendor/product id, it'll just set up "generic" nodes, which probably are not accessible by a user.

Re: iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted

Hi Folks,

I installed Ascii yesterday and these issues were/are still a problem.

The system detects their presence but they were/are not being mounted by Thunar.

If I Check "Import digital photographs when connected option" for Cameras in the Volume Management app, a Notification is displayed in the top right corner of the screen indicating "Camera detected" "A photo camera was detected". The same Notification is displayed when I connect the phone too.

If I look at the permissions under /dev/bus/usb/003/, for example, for the newly connected device, it says that the Group plugdev has Read & Write permissions and my User Name belongs to that Group.

I installed gphoto2, gphotofs and ifuse to no avail.

eudev is installed and I have noticed that neither udev nor udevil are installed. udevil suggests pmount. Are there any possibilities of success with those?

I've been using MX Linux since my last try with Devuan. Both devices are added to the Tree View of Thunar's Side Pane and Right Click to mount for example as "gphoto2://[usb:001,006]/". I can use the phone as an Internet Hotspot also.

The following are installed in MX17. I think I have covered all the pertinent packages.

gphoto related packages
-----------------------
gvfs-backends 1.30.4-1
libgphoto2-6 2.5.12-1
libgphoto2-port12 2.5.12-1

iphone related packages
-----------------------
ifuse 1.1.3-git20171008+1
libimobiledevice-utils 1.2.0+mx17-1
libimobiledevice6 1.2.0+mx17-1
libplist3 1.12+git+1+e37ca00-0.3
libusbmuxd4 1.0.10-git20171008+1
mx-idevice-mounter 0.1.5.0
mx-iphone 0.1mx17
python-imobiledevice 1.2.0+mx17-1
python-plist 1.12+git+1+e37ca00-0.3
usbmuxd 1.1.0-3mx17+2

udev related packages
---------------------
libudev1 232-25+deb9u4
udev 232-25+deb9u4
udevil 0.4.4-1+b1
usbmuxd 1.1.0-3mx17+2

Thunar 1.6.12

So, I installed gvfs-backends, libimobiledevice-utils & udev.

After a Restart, BINGO for my Fuji Camera but still nothing for the phone. However with the Fuji I can't directly open the files as only root is given permission to access them via Thunar even though under /dev/bus/usb/003/, for example, the same permissions still exist as mentioned before. However, I can copy them to another device.

Next, I installed libplist3, python-imobiledevice & python-plist. Still no go with the phone.

Next, I installed udevil, zenity, zenity-common & pmount. With the Fuji, as above, I still can't directly open the files. Still no go with the phone even after a Restart.

So, what is the missing piece or are the missing pieces to the puzzle?

Thanks, MTB.

Re: iPhone and PTP Camera are not being mounted

My PTP camera works out of the box.  Using a minimal xfce install.  I do not have anything checked-on under Settings>Removable Drive and Media, under all tabs.  I DO have the Enable Volume Management checked under Thunar preference, Advanced tab.  Once I plug the camera into usb, Thunar shows the icons in the left panel.  I can copy as well as delete photos as non-root user, no permission problems.

For me its always been gvfs-backends and gphoto2 that seem to provide reliable camera support.

Posted below are "gvfs", "Photo", and "gnome" related packages I have installed.
