Upgrade from Debian Wheezy to Devuan Jessie

Hello ,

i am currently running Debian Wheezy and am wondering if there is an upgrade path for me to switch to Devuan Jessie.

The current Desktop Environment is Gnome3 and i have Radeon Fglrx Driver installed (which i would deinstall prior due to suggested non-compatibility with Jessie).

Yes, there is! You'll find documentation here. I'm not 100% sure if you can go directly from Wheezy or need to upgrade to Debian Jessie first. Gnome is a no-go so the suggestion is to switch to Xfce before the upgrade. Devuan has the same firmware available as Debian.

Note that in sources.list, jessie-updates is no longer in use for old-stable so would throw errors.

Yes, you can go from debian wheezy directly to devuan jessie. I've done it several times in the past year. (always with xfce)

Do it now if you're going to do it. You have about a week before jessie is retired. I heard that july 6 is the projected date.

Thanks, i am still considering to upgrade.
The Wheezy is Overall very satisfactorly Distribution, but sometimes i would Need newer packages like libc6 or other.
One Problem i noted with XFCE on Jessie is Problem with multimonitor as XFCE would not allow easily to extend the monitor onto two Monitors.
Has this issue been solved? What About switching to KDE?
Could i then from Jessie go straight to Beowulf or would i Need to upgrade to Ascii first?

Experiment with xrandr and/or lxrandr. That should get things set up for you.

KDE is available as an option - if you like bling and bloat.

Absolutely not. You need to go through ascii to get to beowulf.

If that's the aptitude equivalent of apt-get install task-desktop task-kde-desktop then it should work.

i might try that out sometime later.

with a fresh install on Devuan Ascii (Graphical Install) the KDE would not install alongside XFCE. It did abort when choosing both options.
Only choosing default install would install normally.

I was in a bit of a panic over this date but then found this nugget in a post on FDN:

Jessie support is now handled by the LTS team rather than Security team. You should be OK until June 30, 2020.

Evidently June 6 is not a hard cutoff date for jessie so we have a little breathing room.

Yes but you only need the second part, task-desktop is a dependency of task-kde-desktop.

I tried to do this today (have several computer running Debian Wheezy 64Bit or Powerpc) with a quite fresh installation on Gnome3 + plus some packages installed

The error when going directly from Wheezy to Devuan Jessie would be

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

So it seems more intelligent to update to Debian Jessie first, or to remove Gnome3 altogether and then upgrade directly to Devuan Jessie (and skipping Debian Jessie altogether)?

Jessie reached End of Life in June and the packages have been archived. Use the following line in sources.list to get jessie packages. You only need the one line, There are no more security fixes or updates for jessie.

deb http://archive.devuan.org/merged jessie main

After you finish upgrading to jessie, you might want to upgrade to ascii, which is the current Oldstable.

Ascii or beowulf are both good options. just dont stay on wheezy or jessie.
